ACER Complaint - Emachines support just passes the buck - emachines EL1352G-01w

emachines EL1352G-01w - Complaint
Review by WappRecycler on 2011-03-15
XIZHI, NEW TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN -- This product is cursed with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit. That means that, unlike the business versions of Windows 7, Windows XP cannot be obtained on it. Microsoft wants $59 for resolution of support issues such as the computer showing JavaScript ( i.e. Active Scripting) "enabled" but my Senator's contact page showing "JavaScript must be enabled in your browser in order to select a topic". Since I purchased the computer with the Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit installed by the computer manufacturer I cannot avoid paying $59 for resolution of support issues without going through the computer manufacturer.

Called Emachines and spoke with someone that said the issue needs to be taken to JavaScript at 1-888-672-2534. This was not the first issue that Emachines shoveled off as not mechanical.
1-888-672-2534 is the phone number for Oracle. JavaScript is a trademark of Oracle Corporation which will provide assistance if I purchase support. 1-888-672-2534 is answered by operators. The operators almost immediately and repeatedly transferred my calls to a machine that only asked for a sevice contract # or would connect me with sevice contract sales.

Needless to say - I recommend that those wanting a NEW computer find one not sold with WINDOWS installed as the operating system unless you are lucky enough to find an older model with XP. (Probably through an under-the-counter dealer.) Definitely stear clear of any computer marketed through Emachines. Make sure that there is the address of the manufacturer on the packaging so you will not need to look it up on Wikipedia.

I know several users that have windows 7 home premium and have no issues. It sounds to me as if the configuration of your browser is not set up correctly. personally I'd not use Internet Explorer and go download firefox, once you have firefox loaded I'm betting it will work out of the blocks without any issue. however, you need to check your internet options in IE and be sure that javascript is turned on and it should be ok.

I know that this kind of thing can be frustrating. You buy a computer and just expect it to work. By the same token, it's not really fair to blame Acer if there's things you don't like about Windows 7. That's sort of like blaming the cable company because there was a crummy program on TNT last night.

And if your Senator's website renders some JavaScript, you can't blame Windows 7.

azRider has some good suggestions: Changing a browser setting will probably do the trick. Try this: http://support.microsoft.com/gp/howtoscript

Using Firefox is worth a try, too. It's free.

I haven't actually used Windows 7 Home Premium. I'm lucky enough to have gotten Windows 7 Ultimate in connection with work and have been using it for about a year on two different machines. Based on that, I can't buy into your assertion that someone buyng a new computer should seek out XP.

I like XP, too, but it's obsolete now. Windows 7 works great. If you're buyiung a new machine, it will probably be a 64-bit machine and you'll want a 64-bit OS. Sure, there's going to be some settings amd configuration stuff you'll have to learn. But if we all got stuck in the past, we'd still be running DOS, right?
