I don't know why you are complaining about their location. You chose them, right?

Unslated> Agreeing with you on this one. How could the OP complain about location, when they are the ones that chose the hotel? And more times than not, I notice OP's like to toss-in the old "and the place is dirty and has bugs", as a last ditch insult that's not even true half the time. But just a little more venting on their way out the room.

unslated, Some times when choosing an accommodation you get burned by the weasel words in the property description. I once rented a house in Destin FL advertised as having an ocean view. It did if you stood on the roof. Also with vacation rentals you gotta be careful with words like 'Close to', 'within walking distance', 'only minutes away'...etc.

I know I've learned them lessons the hard way.

LR, that's why maps come in handy.

They certainly do.

When I plan a trip *anywhere*, I get a map of the area and note all the places I plan to visit. For example, when we went to Paris, we spent a week planning our itinerary. We made sure our lodging was centrally located.

trmn8r> I have done the same every year. My kids convinced my wife that maybe this year we should just "wing it". No reservations, day-to-day flying by the seat of our pants, etc...Truly spontaneous.

I have always been the planner, Google maps with every turn and mile marker, etc...admittedly a little anal-retentive.

OK, let's not get crazy, with the Google maps homemade TripTik (-: Winging it in Italy sounds romantic, but a person would have to be prepared for the breakup stage of romance, such as happened to the OP.

Ice is much less common in Europe than in the USA. Huge ice machines on every floor and a big ice bucket in each room is very rare... In fact I don't think I have ever seen it anywhere outside of North America.

When in Rome...nevermind.
