Cannery Pier Hotel Compliment - Cannery Pier Hotel in Astoria, Oregon
ASTORIA, OREGON -- I was recently in Astoria and stayed at the Cannery Pier Hotel. Someone had told me it was nice, but it far exceeded my expectations so I wanted to share.
First of all, I arrived on a Wednesday at about 12:30 PM. I was waiting for a friend and decided to go in and talk to the very pleasant front desk person. Since check-in wasn't until 3 PM, I didn't expect a room just yet. Much to my surprise, he asked me if I wanted to check in early :) That was very unexpected and hasn't happened much to me in the past at any hotel.
When I opened the door to my room, I was astounded by the close-up view of the Columbia River. The hotel is built about 60 feet over the river and I had been told to get a room on the first floor, which I seldom would. I felt like I was right on the water in a ship. There was a small balcony, and also a window seat. It was pretty cold out, so I was also happy to have a nice fireplace to heat up the room. There was a sofa and a table for two by the fireplace, and, of course, a comfortable bed. They also provide binoculars and a guide to the passing ships of the day.
When I walked into the room, I was absolutely amazed at how nice it was. It had a very large bathroom, with a separate shower and claw foot tub and a separate toilet area too. They had spent much time seeing to it that every detail in the room was perfect. If you were in the bathtub, there were shutters that opened into the main room so you could appreciate the beautiful view of the Columbia River.
There was also a coffee bar which included a very handy sink. Underneath was a microwave and refrigerator.
The staff at this hotel were all very nice and helpful. They had menus of all the hotels in the area and great recommendations. They also had a chauffeur who would take you to any restaurant of your choice after 5 PM. That was a nice addition to the already great service. There was also a complimentary wine tasting with hors d'oeuvres at 5 PM and a breakfast in the AM. There was also a spa and exercise room.
The TV was satellite, but I really didn't spend much time with that except late at night.
Here is the hotel's web site. www.cannerypierhotel.com Check it out. The pictures are perfectly representative of the hotel--and everyone knows this doesn't always pan out.
I have stayed at 5 star hotels all over the world, and I have to tell you that this was one of the best hotels I have ever stayed at, 5 stars or not. It was also immaculately clean and the beds were extremely comfortable.
If you find yourself in this area, check this place out. I plan on going back again, that's for sure. It is a bit pricy, but a great place for a special getaway or just to catch some time off. They do run specials occasionally and also offer a special government rate too. You won't be disappointed.
