University of Phoenix Complaint - 72 Year Old Widow Lied To An Turned In To Collections

Review by caroljeanyou629 on 2011-04-11
Online classes attended 3 classes failed 3r class, was billed almost $3,000, I am a widow and go to food pantries cannot afford to buy food, but they are suing me and do not want to except payments. I live on a widow's pension and cannot hope to get this paid, they will not write it off and misrepresented the facts about the grants and the cost out-of-pocket. Social security they knew I was on and never told me about an estimate of cost for me. I am being sue by them now, collection agency.

If you can help at all please do so, does anyone out there really care about widows on pensions?

Anybody, please help me.

Thank you,
Carol J. Powell

Did you actually get a court summons or just a collections letter?

If you got a court summons that would probably be a good deal because more than likely if you show up to court a judge will dismiss these charges given your current state of affairs. Maybe take your story to the local media or one of your children.

Good luck!

Correct me if I'm wrong here but I believe if they sue you they cannot touch your social security money. Also if you are on such a fixed income as you state any judge should toss this out due to you not being able to afford it

Was anything signed before the classes started as to how much you were given in grants and how much you would have to pay?

Not really enough information to give a good reply. Financial aid comes in many different forms and you MAY be liable for the cost of a failed course depending on what type of financial aid you received. $3000 sounds like the cost on ONE course plus collection fees, etc...

i'm just asking....but I wonder what degree program the OP was going for.

blue, unless it's a graduate level course, I can't imagine that one course would cost $3,000. I'm taking a class in a masters program right now at a state university and the 3 credit class cost me approximately $1,800.

I think she was surprised at the $3,000 she was billed for the three classes.

It's the University of Phoenix so you know it's over priced and shady. These are the same people who round up the homeless in order to enroll them so that they can assist them in obtaining government grants and guaranteed loans fully realizing the homeless won't attend class or pay back the taxpayer.

Also it’s well known the University of Phoenix engages in high pressure unethical and at times illegal sales practices which is probably the case on this one. The OP is a victim and deserves a bit more respect and understanding than is being showed here by those who have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. Eh, Typical my3cents.

Typical Lord. He knows it all, no one else knows anything!

Momsey, you've had dealings with them?
Just curious.

Nope, I have no interest in an online college. Have you?

Lsalvador, Sixty minutes did a segment on the University of Phoenix and others. It was an eye opener.

I see so many adds for this phoenix college online. If a company has to spam all over the place to get people to sign up, then most likely i wouldn't trust them. Theres a lot of decent colleges out there that don't advertise as crazy as this one does. I have had phone calls because a 3rd party sent my information to them and i did not ask for it......i just said wrong number!

Are they nationwide? That scathing of an expose, huh?

LOL, I gotta give you that one momsey. I do give off that attitude way too often. I don't mean to but it's just my personality online and heck offline as well. I am who I am and I make no apologies for it.

That's ok, Lord, that's why we love you.

You may want to consider it momsey - especially with a wee little momsey in the works. Its a bit more expensive but very convenient!
