Oakley Complaint - No Pride in their Brand! - Sunglasses

Sunglasses - Complaint
Review by Wheatst on 2011-04-12
My 5 year old daughter is rough on her $5 pair of sunglasses. It's amazing the glasses make it through a week...let alone a year or two.

Thirteen months ago I purchased a prescription pair of Oakley sunglasses....total retail = $560....13 months later, an arm falls off....the warranty is out after 12 months. These glasses have been well cared for. For $110, the dealer will replace the frame. I expected Oakley to stand by their Brand Name better than that....but hey, we are only consumers and we should understand that it is only a 12 month warranty....Please do not buy this brand.

Can you not buy the part to fix the glasses yourself? My husband is an Oakley Fanatic and I remember the nose piece broke on one pair and he ordered a replacement. Try ebay if you don't have any luck w/Oakley. Sunglasses Hut carries Oakley replacement parts, if that helps.

As Samanthasmom said, can't that be easily fixed with a simple, inexpensive repair kit? Did you take the glasses back to where you bought them? It's hard to believe they won't do such a simple repair for free.

Thanks for the info! I, however, believe they are too proud of their brand. They'd have to be to charge the prices they do for a pair of sunglasses.
Did you know that in order to sell Oakley sunglasses, you have to agree to sell them at MSRP (or so I have been told by someone who has worked at a sunglasses store). That's why you never see any variance in the price from store to store. Basically, Oakley doesn't want the market to drive the price, because then they would see what is reasonable. There are some Oakley glasses that I really like, but there is no way I'm paying those prices.

You don't have to pay market prices! Have you heard of private sale sites such at Hautelook & Rue La La? They have designer sales daily-different name brand/high end designers every day, sale lasts 2 days, and they have both had Oakley recently, in fact last week Rue La La had Oakley and everything was 50-60% off retail. Only downside is, they only offer a few pairs of glasses, its mostly backpacks & apparel. You do have to sign up and they e-mail you the daily sales. Oakley also has a program for government & law enforcement, my husband is in it and he pays around $60 for a new pair of sunglasses! If you don't qualify for the program, find someone who is and have them order for you :)

Samanthasmom, thanks for the info! Now that you mention it, I do see Oakley sunglasses come up on Steep and Cheap once in a while. I have yet to see the style that I would like, though. I will check the other sites as well. If not, I do have a friend that is in law enforcement.

In my opinion, Oakley sunglasses are not stylish and are overpriced. I have bought several $3.50 sunglasses from a dollar store and they are very stylish and does the job of blocking sun rays. Im not kidding at all.

All I've worn for sunglasses for the last 16 years is Oakley, and I have never had any trouble at all-and I wear them biking, skiing, snowmobiling, motocycling, boating etc. I generally buy a new pair every 2-3 years. I also have perscription glasses with oakley frames and those have held up for 2 years so far.

My hubby has had the same pair of Oakleys for about four years. He needs a new pair now just because they've gotten scratched up over the years.

I can't see purchasing a $500 pair of glasses for a 5 yr old, My kids prescription glasses were under a hundred bucks.
Posted by unslated on 2011-04-14:
Jktshff1, I don't think they were for the 5 yr old.

Your sunglasses are over a year old. They are offering to replace the frames for only 20% of your original cost. That sounds like quite a good deal to me! Most folks leave you hanging after the warranty expires. Take the deal and run, and remember to give the dealer a THANK YOU. He doesn't have to extend himself that way.

Jkt, the OP is comparing the quality of her daughter's $5.00 sunglasses to the Oakley's.

Brain fart, my bad....wait a minute, this post has been rewritten.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-04-14:
Blue, I don't think the frame has to be replaced. The arm just needs to be put back on. I think Oakley should do that for a small fee or free. That's the kind of customer service I would expect from Oakley.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-04-14:
Jkt, I'm not sure if it was rewritten, but that was the impression I got when I first read it.

If the arm fell off, because the screw came out, it should be easily repaired for a low cost by just about anyone.

However, the dealer offered to replace the frame. That tells me there is possibly damage to the frame where the hinge attaches.

As far as the OP hoping to get warranty repair in the 13th month of a 12-month warranty, most companies won't do that.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-04-14:
Trmn, I agree that the OP shouldn't expect an expired warranty to be honored, but if it IS just a matter of attaching the arm, I think Oakley should accommodate the customer for a nominal fee or even free.

I personally think Oakley should offer a lifetime warranty, but I'll just keep dreaming.
Posted by trmn8r on 2011-04-14:
It sounds to me like it isn't just attaching the arm, since the dealer offered to screw in a more expensive manner.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-04-14:
"since the dealer offered to screw in a more expensive manner."

Why just replace a screw if you can make money on a new frame? That's how I see it. But if it IS more than just attaching the arm, I'm wrong.
Posted by trmn8r on 2011-04-14:
Venice -> I'm having a hard time imagining the dealer suggesting the frame be replaced for a $110 screw if it is just a 0.50 screw. I guess it can happen though.
Posted by bluediamond98 on 2011-04-14:
If it's just a matter of attaching an arm, I can't see anyone taking it in to be quite honest. The repair kits are about $2. I would imagine it had to be more extensive.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-04-14:
Trmn and blue, you are both probably right. But I wouldn't be surprised if someone took the glasses back just to have the arm attached not realizing how simple it would be to do on their own. I can understand a customer thinking Oakley would just offer to fix it for the sake of good customer service. If the frame actually does need to be replaced, then I agree that Oakley offered a good deal considering the warranty expired.

It's really sad that they are allowed to get away with the advertizing practices. I purchased a pair of sunglasses (yes I got a discount for being military/FF) and it wasn't until after the box with the protective case showed up did I have any idea that the actual sunglasses were going to take up to two months to be delivered. Nothing in any correspondance and nothing until I called.
They basically suggest that I'm stupid because I didn't interprit avail in Aug to if you order these sunglasses that are in high demand they will be back ordered 30 days to 2 months.
Really sad and I'll think twice before giving them any more of my money. There are equal products available now. They used to have the market and don't realize that word of mouth should mean shomething.
