Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles Informative - Too easy to get a handicap license plate/Plackard-Virginia DMV
I moved from Georgia to Virginia and went to the DMV to change my licence and licence plate. Had problems with changing my licence as Virginia requires a certified birth record and would not accept my original birth certificate..took me over a month to obtain a certified birth record from Missouri but ok..different state different rules. I asked about obtaining a handicap licence plate. Was told to go on-line, print out and fill out the form and bring it to the DMV. Ok I printed the form and began to fill it out and was shocked that NO PROOF (Notary Seal) was required to verify the doctors signature to certify that I was in fact handicapped and eligible for the plate. There is a space on the form for a doctors license number and signature but anybody can make up a number and a bogus signature. When I inquired about this at the DMV was told that they have no way of verifying doctor's licence numbers. This means anybody can get a handicap plate in Virginia!!! Now I know that no matter where I go in Richmond I can never find a handicap spot to park in.
Someone needs to introduce a bill to change this!! Yes, as soon as I find out who to write in government I will!!
