Skechers Complaint - Heel pain - Shape Upss

Shape Upss - Complaint
Review by jrnyfan_1 on 2011-05-04
Before I started wearing the Shape Ups I had absolutely no heel pain, but after wearing them for almost 2 years I started having sever heel pain in both feet when getting up in the morning and even after just sitting. Has anyone else had this? I plan on seeing a foot doctor and if they can tell me that this is a shoe related issue I am then going to seek advise from an attorney.

I'd be willing to wager that it is the shoes.

I have the same problem with my newest pair of shoes now (Airwalks) but I am 50 years old as well.

Be sure to come back and let us know what advice the attorney gives you.

My guess: Shoes aren't meant to last more than a few months if they are worn regularly. Two years is a pretty good run. Buy a new pair.

I tried on a pair and I could tell immediately that they were not for me. I overpronate very badly. If your not familiar with that term, my arches collapse too far when I step, which torques everything the wrong way from my feet up to my hips. I could tell by taking one step that the Shape-ups did not provide the support and motion control that I need.
People with a neutral step, or even someone with the opposite problem may be fine in them.

If someone that does not have my specific problem tried to wear my running shoes, they would likely begin experiencing pain.
What I'm saying is, most of us don't pay attention to our individual shoe needs. Go to a specialty running store and have them analyze your gait. The problem could be your feet and not the shoe. I hate to see future innovation stifled by lawsuits.
Also, after 2 years you probably wore them out.

I agree with jc. If you wear athletic shoes every day, they should be replaced every 3 months. It's actually better to have two pairs and rotate them every other day. This gives them a chance to dry out inbetween. The soles would definitely not be as cushiony after 3 months.

chu has a good point too. Just because something is "popular" doesn't mean it will work for your particular footwear needs.

An attorney? What legal recourse do you think you may have?

I recently bought a new pair of sneakers, from my usual brand (New Balance). I had three different problems - toe pain, toe nail pain, heal pain.

What I discovered is that I needed a larger toebox. My middle toe on each foot sticks out relative to its neighbors.

I researched the lasts used, and chose a different model. Problem solved. I didn't think of using an attorney, though.

How old are your shoes? If this is the same pair you have been wearing for 2 years, age may be the problem.

I bought Shapeups in the fall. I also have a bad case of plantar fasciitis (heel pain) that I blamed on the Skechers (because I bought them last) but it was actually caused by my Uggs. I washed the Uggs and left them a few days to dry during which my feet felt much better (about 50%). When I put them back on - instant excruciating pain. If you have been wearing them two YEARS, I think you would have had pain earlier but I'm no doc so I can't say for sure. What I have found helps tremendously is putting a piece of surgical tape around the arch of my foot - close to the heel. I do not need it during the day but wear it at night so it doesn't hurt when I jump out of bed. Try it - you will be pleasantly surprised!

Invest your money in a good podiatrist, and forget the attorney. Find out what's going on with your heel. As people age, the fat in the heels become thinner. All you may need is a good shot of cortizone in your heel, but you won't know unless you visit a podiatrist.

Not every inconvenience is an automatic law suit, or requires contacting an attorney. You need a podiatrist, not an attorney.

Good luck~

Skye, it's possible that the advice an attorney would provide is the same as yours (except skipping an attorney).

Maybe that's what the OP needs - a personal advisor. What are your rates, because you seem to be doing a good job so far.

Sounds like your shoes wore out and it's time to replace them. Don't go to a lawyer, just go buy a new pair of shoes.

Plantar fasciitis. The tendon that comes down over your ankle is bugging you.

I had this. I took ibuprofen and stretched my legs/heels before I got out of bed in the morning, which are two of the things you should do.

The problem may be shoe-related, but not the way you think. Different feet adapt to different shoes. Or not. So, yes, your shoes may be contributing to your problem, but because of your feet.

Ditch the shoes, see your doctor, and get better! It took me over a year to be entirely pain-free, using just ibuprofen, diet, exercise, stretching, and shoes that work for my feet. But now I don't have the problem.

Well, yeah. I had to do some market research on these fitness shoes and found out that they increase pain because they stress muscles in your legs. That's how you burn calories, working muscles that aren't usually worked while walking.

I started having heel pain out of the blue. It took me a while to figure out that it was from resting my heels on part of the kitchen chair. I stopped doing that and the pain eventually went away. It took a long time though.

I don't think your shoes are the problem. You would have noticed it sooner. I also don't think worn out shoes would cause heel pain. That's just my opinion based on wearing worn out sneakers all the time. I like them that way.

My husbands podiatrist said that you should replace your shoes about every 3-6 months or when they reach about 300 miles of use. He also doesn't recommend the uses of sketchers Shape ups or any similar shoe. He said that they change the natural gait of the foot and will cause pain.

I watched a news piece on TV about these shoes and there is no known benefit from walking in these shoes, other than they get people to go walking in them in hopes that they will work.
