Dish Network Complaint - Termination fees & return of equipment
I called Dish Network on 5/26/2011 to cancel my service on 6/1/2011 as I am moving to another residence and satellite dishes are not allowed. I was informed that since I was terminating before the end of my 2-year contract (of which I was not aware even existed since I was not told this when the dish was installed) that there would be a $12.50 early termination fee. I agreed to pay this since I have no other choice. Then I was informed that Dish Network would send me 3 shipping labels so I could ship them the two boxes, 3 remotes and the part from the dish on the patio. I was told there would be a $15.00 charge for each label used to ship them their equipment. When I told the representative that I could not guarantee that any equipment would not be stolen after I moved on June 1st and that the management of this apartment complex requires that their equipment be removed, I was told that in order for them to send out a technician to remove their equipment it would cost me $95.00 to do that. They would not give me a date for the technician to be here until AFTER I paid the $95.00 fee. I was also told that if I did not pay the $95.00 for the technician to come out and elected to use the shipping labels the service would have to remain active until they received the shipped equipment. Since there would be no one living here after June 1st, I had no choice but to pay the $95.00 fee.
This amounts to extortion since either way I was going to be charged either for the service to remain on until they received the equipment and charging me $15.00 per label or pay the $95.00 for the technician to come out and physically remove their equipment. At this same time, my mother in Texas had called Dish Network regarding a notice she received from her apartment management that all satellite dishes had to be removed and the tenants had to remove them. She was informed by her Dish Network representative that all the equipment is the property of Dish Network and nobody but Dish Network is authorized to remove any of their equipment from the premises.
So why is there such a difference between Texas and California on how the equipment is to be removed? Also, I believe that this practice of requiring me to box up and ship back some of the equipment at my expense and pay for service that is not possible from the date of removal of the equipment until it is received by them is nothing less than robbery. Not to mention that requiring me to pay the $95.00 charge PRIOR TO RECEIVING A DATE for the technician to come out is nothing less than EXTORTION!!! This is definitely not good customer service and I will NEVER again use Dish Network.
