FedEx Complaint - Fedex driver enters my building without knocking - FedEx

Complaint
Review by fancypicker474 on 2011-05-27
I was in my home recording studio and a FedEx driver walked in without knocking. I filed a complaint with FedEx. When the driver received the complaint, six days later he came back to my residence and confronted my wife, demanding that I call his supervisor and inform his supervisor that he did knock on the door. Both incidents were captured on my home security cameras, and witnesses were in my home recording studio with me.

It seems very unusual that a FedEx, UPS, etc driver would enter a residence without knocking ~and~ waiting for the door to be answered.

I used to work at a business that was in a residence, and the UPS driver would knock and walk right in, because we were a business.

Your complaint at written complains that the delivery professional didn't knock, so I am wondering if you have a similar setup - frequent deliveries at a home business. Usually you would expect ~more~ than a knock.

Yeah, this is odd. Why would the driver be entering your building at all? Unless it's a business?

This is a private home studio in a separate building at my residence. My band was having a practice session. The package was a personal package which required an adult signature. My wife was inside the residence.

Were you recording at the time? Is it possible you did not hear the knock? Maybe he knew you were there from the sound but realized you couldn't hear the knock, so he walked in.

Either way, it was inappropriate for the driver to return and confront your wife.

We were taking a break, and there was no music going on. He just let himself right in. (as stated above caught on security camera)

Does this home studio receive packages on a very frequent basis, so much so that the driver usually knocks and walks in by himself?
Posted by fancypicker474 on 2011-05-27:
No, The studio is a private studio. It is not a business. Any other deliveries I've had with this driver were non studio related and delivered at my residence, with the same driver knocking on the door to my residence.

Thanks for the additional info, fancypicker. Sounds like you were absolutely right to complain about how the driver delivered the package and it's pretty disturbing that he returned and confronted your wife over the situation. I hope you go back to FedEx and make sure they are aware.

You didn't mention your location but I have a relative *Out West* where delivery personnel will actually open the unlocked front door of a residence, deposit the parcel out of the weather, close the door and go on to the next location. Had I not seen it, I would never have believed it. No one ever complained there, but I would jump out of my skin if someone did it to me here.

I'm left a bit perplexed by all of this. I saw momsey's comment that somewhere in the wild West drivers will open a door to set a package inside out of the weather. That doesn't happen here in the East - they may be shot in some jurisdictions.

IMO, a driver should never open the door to a private residence, even if they need a signature and are sure someone is home. It sounds like that may be what happened here. Knock or no knock.

If the driver had knocked, would that have made a difference if he went ahead and opened the door himself? What if you're walking around nak'd as a Jay Bird, and don't hear the knock? Come as you are?

That was my comment TRM. I guess folks there were just glad to get a delivery that they weren't required to read a note to go pick up somewhere. An entirely different lifestyle but it worked for them. I can't imagine leaving a door unlocked all day while I was at work. No one stole anything. It reminded me of the days when individuals would toss the car keys on the floor of the driver's side of the vehicle and go on about their business.

Whiteduck, I live in a very rural area in the south. The kind of place where people normally just doesn't do those things or someone may get shot. So you better believe I shall be locking the door in my studio when we are practicing in the future. This Fedex driver was very lucky.

Now where he is not so lucky, is the video I have of him coming in and the video of him confronting my wife. He will lose his contract over this, according to the supervisor, whom I emailed both videos I caught on my security camera to earlier today.

When we first moved here, we didn't worry about locking the doors or the car, so I can understand if there are still parts of the country where that is common practice. In some cases, the customer may give the driver permission to open a door and leave packages inside. I could see that happening. Our UPS driver has left packages in the garage when the door is open, but he would never open the front door, even after knocking.

Fancypicker, if this driver loses his job, I'd worry about him coming back again to confront you. He sounds like the type who might do something like that. I hope he knows you have a security camera.

I have fond memories of those days, Nohandle. There was no AIDS, nobody had a cell phone, and gas was under a buck a gallon.
Posted by littleshorty on 2011-05-27:
I remember back in 1999 when gas was 99 cents a gallon. You put in $10, and got change back. Now $10 gets me a quarter of a tank
Posted by trmn8r on 2011-05-27:
Is that right? Under a buck in 1999. I guess I should have written "under 8o cents a gallon".
Posted by littleshorty on 2011-05-27:
Well it was here in Phoenix. It was over a dollar in Cali. When we left CA in 1999, gas was around $1.30-$1.50. My dad would complain about the prices of gas. Lol. That seems so cheap now!

My UPS driver leaves my packages in the garage. I leave it unlocked for him when I am expecting something. It's something we discussed though. Had he just taken it upon himself to do so, I would have been ticked. I hope you receive a satisfactory resolution to your complaint.

I would feel priviliged if Fedex or UPS would even take the time to knock on my door. I have frequently watched them walk to the door, literally "toss" packages on the doorstep in plain sight of passersby. I also have caught them in the act of leaving a "door tag" for a package that needed a signature without ever knocking.

My UPS guy sets it in front of the French door, turns and knocks on the glass as he is leaving. I think he knows I'm in the buff here and neither of us wants an unfortunate meeting.

Where I live now, the delivery people just knock and leave it, regardless of company.
Posted by Venice09 on 2011-05-27:
Maybe you need a UPS gal, trmn. ;)

Fed ex comes around here a lot. UPS just drops it and literally runs away, as though he thinks I'm gonna attack him when I open the door. I also remember when gas was .88 back around that time. $20.00 would have filled up my van now with some change left over. Now it doens't even make it to half way.
