Homelite Complaint - Won't start - Homelite Trim N' Edge

Homelite Trim N' Edge - Complaint
Review by Dractulmede on 2011-06-04
Of all the gasoline lawn mowers and trimmers I have used down through the years, this handheld "weed wacker" is the most difficult to start of all of them and I have not been able to start it this season at all. It is stored indoors and fuel is replaced each year. Yet even with starting fluid the thing will not start. The instructions say to pull the cord 8 times on full choke, then 6 times at half choke BUT NO MORE. It does not say what to do after this if it does not start.

Also, at times it is incredibly difficult to pull the start cord. It feels as though pressure or resistence of some sort builds up in the cylinders as you pull the start cord a few times. Then its gone in the next few pulls and builds up again as you continue to pull the cord.

tried changing the sparkplug and cleaning the filter?

I have bought a Black & Decker weed wacker that runs on 18v battery and I love it! No more depending on gas, no more pulling start cord, and its quiet.

See my review of the cordless weed wacker here: http://community.my3cents.com/showTopic.cgi?id=23546

i am thinking the same as with jkt. have you verified there is a spark?

Does this weed eater have a 2-cycle engine (meaning that you have to mix 2-cycle oil with the gasoline, usually at 50:1)? Sometimes, if the oil/gas mix isn't exactly right, either the weed eater won't start at all, or will smoke badly when started. I once had a gas weed eater that I got from my stepfather (don't remember the brand offhand), but for both him and me, getting the thing started and running was sheer aggravation. Eventually the weed eater had to be thrown in the trash since it started leaking fuel badly...I ended up buying an electric one as a replacement.

MRM> I was at Lowes yesterday, and was looking at trimmers, and I couldn't help but fall in love with the 18V cordless/fuel-less model.

Whatever cordless trimmer you choose, get the one that comes with two 18v batteries as mine has.

You should, if you aren't already, run the trimmer out of gas at the end of each season while it is running. Gas will start to gum up after 3 or 4 months sitting in the carburetor, and may cause hard starting and poor running.

I'm noticing the gas vs. battery debate has popped up. Two different animals, and not everyone who uses one would want the other.

Sounds like you're not getting any spark, you're flooding it out resulting in the difficult pull, etc. Pull the plug and see if it appears wet after your next attempt at starting - if this is the case, you're definitely flooding it out, - change the plug, cut back on the choking and give it a try. If you don't get even a whimper out of it, toss it in the trash and get a different brand.

How old is this weedeater? You mention that the fuel is replaced "each year".

Perhaps it has just plain worn out?
