Prepare to pay high interest rates

After making all monthly payments on time and having a credit score of 725 or higher at all 3 credit agencies. When my 0% introductory rate was over they decided I should pay 22% interest because I was warned it was possible when I signed up. While speaking to the customer service representative I was told the lower rates are given at random. Please save yourself the hassle and money and find a more consumer friendly credit card company. Discover and Citi have been great to me.

Denied Increase After Brother Murdered

CITY OF INDUSTRY, CALIFORNIA -- Oct 5, 2013 my brother was beaten to death by 4 men, one with brass knuckles. His wallet and cell phone were missing when ambulance and police arrived. I called Capital One Bank and requested an increase so I could purchase a ticket to get to my brothers funeral and support my mother and father since I'm the oldest. I have had this account since Apr 2007, never late and I was just asking because I needed to get home. My brothers body was held for two weeks because it was part of a crime scene. I finally borrowed the money to get home.

As consumers we have to stop doing business with those that only lets the money flow one way, into their coffers. I called a few days later and I canceled both accounts. I have been a great, on time paying customer for 7 yrs on the one card and only two on the second. I know they won't go out of business by me taking mine away, but at least their bottom line won't keep getting fat by me since I'm so undervalued. I have a credit card still, but not with them, that's a personal problem I know but I still feel as though since I have been paying bills on time I shouldn't have to wait ten days as I was told by the rep. Since my brothers body was held I did get to attend his funeral.

My mother has lost it and cries nightly about this senseless act. I don't know how I got through it, but I know I don't care for Capital One anymore. Sorry experience, very sorry customer care I think, a multibillion dollar company can't see to take care of those responsible customers that's the reason for their solid growth, not good at all.

Beware of the Annual Membership Fee

I have had a Capital One card since 2003. I recently moved to a different town and received a forwarded bill from Capital One informing me that I owed a $39.00 membership fee by July 21st. I immediately contacted them to update my new mailing address and was informed that now since I did not pay my membership fee on time, I was now being charged a late fee!! I explained that I had just received the letter in the mail that day and that there was a post office delay due to my forwarding address, I also explained that I did not have a chance to update my new address yet but had a zero balance on the account so was not worried about it.

Despite never having paid them late in the 10 years I had the card, they treated me very rude and unprofessional and told me I should have known my membership fee would be due. When I told them that I was a single parent and did not have the extra money to pay for fees I was told that there is nothing they can do to help me. One supervisor hung up on me because she could not effectively justify the fees and her script did not have answers to my questions. I had asked her if she had a Capital One card with a yearly fee and if she felt that it was fair to make me pay a fee in addition to the interest I have paid over the years when I have used the card.

They deducted $10 from the membership fee, but I still had to pay them $29.00 by phone to avoid getting a negative report to my credit bureau. I had told the Capital One representative that I was going to be voicing my horrible experience and cancelling the card. She responded that it was my choice to do that but it wouldn't change my balance that was immediately due. Unfortunately one of my other credit cards was recently bought out by Capital One and I am not happy. I am making this card my first priority to pay off and never ever do business with them again.. ever.

Holding Electronic Payment
By -

I have had my Capital One credit card for close to 2 years now. I have never been late paying on this card and for the past year pay the card off in full every month. I started using the card for a business project and was coming close to my 10,500 credit limit. So that I could continue to use the card I sent Capital one an Electronic payment of 5,000 on 10/18 before I even received my monthly statement. My bank sent the money to Capital One on 10/19 and Capital One "posted" the payment to my account on 10/20. So I start using the card again.

Today 10/26 my card is declined for $56 in Home Depot. I call Capital One to see why. I was told that my payment was on hold. I asked why and was told that Capital One can put a hold on payments for up to 11 days. The payment was applied to the balance but not o the available credit. I was not happy and went back and forth with the customer service person. They did make the payment available but I wanted to know why. I was told it was a program to protect me from “Fraud”. How does holding my payment protect me from fraud?

I was also told that Capital One had to “verify” the funds and that my bank maybe slow in doing that. Isn't an electronic transfer verified before it is sent? My money left my account 10/19, I asked where is my money. Could not get an answer to this. I called back an hour later to see if I could get more information because the whole thing does not make sense. I was told that sometimes if someone was making small payments and then made a large payment that it could be on hold. She looked at my history and “oh I don't see that”. She saw that I don't miss payments and pay off the balance each month and have made several large payments. She could not answer why this happened.

She transferred me to the escalation department. I again asked why this happened. The person was kind of rude. I was told that this could happen for various reasons. Still never given a reason. I was then told that she could not guarantee that this would not happen next month. I told her that was unacceptable. Her solution was that I could call Capital One after I make a payment and make sure the payment was not put on hold. So not only do you have to pay your bill on time but you have to call to make sure your payment is not put in limbo. That is crazy. I have better things to do with my time like, find a new credit card.

Do Not Rely on This Card!!

*** WARNING *** To all Capital One credit card holders: If you travel more than 200 miles from home, make absolutely sure that you TAKE A 2nd CREDIT CARD WITH YOU. Even if you call Capital One and tell them that you will be out of town, IT WILL NOT MATTER! They will SHUTDOWN YOUR CARD and change your credit card number as quickly as you are reading this message.

This has happened to our family twice in the last week. My wife and I were traveling to New York city, approx. 250 miles from home. After the second transaction, Capital One shutdown our card and changed the card number. Since this is done automatically by computers, there is no one with enough authority at Capital One to unlock your account. You will be out of luck and since your credit card number has subsequently been changed, you will now have a useless card. Good luck with a huge hotel bill!!

This also happened to my daughter who is traveling in Europe. Before she left, SHE CALLED Capital One and told them EXACTLY the dates and places she would be visiting. IT DIDN'T MATTER. As she was making a purchase in Europe, her charges were denied, her account locked, and her number changed. After further investigation, Capital One told us that they had no record of my daughter calling to inform them of her trip. This was a complete lie, because I was on the other end of the phone when my daughter called and told them.

IF YOU ARE TRAVELING OVERSEAS, MAKE SURE TO TAKE ANOTHER CREDIT CARD WITH YOU! Better yet, leave the Capital One card at home. You, or your kids, will be stranded without the use of your Capital One credit card. Be warned.

Capital One Conservative Credit Limit Increases and Non-Existent Credit Line Increases.
By -

MCLEAN, VIRGINIA -- I called Capital One to obtain a credit line increase on my Visa Platinum Card and Capital One would not grant the request. A friend of mine had attempted to get a credit line increase on his Capital One Visa because he travels for business and Capital One denied the request. He informed me so I called Capital One to see if they would increase my limit and they did not. I asked to speak with a manager to find out why Capital One could not increase my limit in consideration for my 10 years of patronage, on time payments and the fact I have not had a credit limit increase within the last 5 years. Here is what Capital One said.

"You have an excellent history with us and have always paid on time. The decision is not based on information contained in your credit report. Capital One is very conservative with their credit limits and credit limit increases and Capital One has placed a freeze on any credit limit increases. When Capital One lifts the freeze, you will definitely be considered for a limit increase and they will send you a letter in the mail if they increase your limit. I'm sorry I can't help you at this time with a credit limit increase but I can offer you a 0% balance transfer offer."

I declined the balance transfer. The purpose of the call was to get my limit increased and see what Capital One would tell me. I have read posts elsewhere where Capital One account holders have been denied credit line increases even though they have perfect credit. I wanted to find the underlying cause of Capital One's credit limit policy so I can inform everyone as to why Capital One will/does not increase credit limits. Any other Capital One account holders had this same experience and/or been told what Capital One told me?

Dishonest

After leaving college, I destroyed my credit by foolishly paying bills incessantly late, putting myself in a position where I could not obtain a credit card. No doubt, my fault. I finally managed to get one as my credit improved - Capital One, of course, $250 limit. I figured at very least it would help me fix my credit. After six months they sent me a balance increase offer - a $100 increase in credit in exchange for a $100 charge to the card. While legal, appallingly sleazy, and I bit the bullet and did it. A year or so later, they mailed me a "pre-approved credit increase" for about a grand.

I signed, mailed, and promptly received notice by mail that my application for increase had been denied after a query of my credit report. The pre-approval notice was a fraudulent representation. I'd never have applied to Capital One for an increase knowing based on what I'd come to learn of their behavior. A pre-approval I OK'd presuming that any query of my report had been made, for good or bad. I called customer service, complained about the misleading offer that resulted in another query of my credit report, paid off the balance and cancelled my card. Months later the account was still open.

I complained again, threatened to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, and the account was finally closed. This took immense arguing to accomplish. (Note that within a week I'd obtained a $5K limit card from Bank of America - a reputable company with much stricter standards.) About two weeks after my last complaint, I started receiving - daily - dozens of pieces of correspondence from Capital One thanking me for inquiring about Boat Loans, Home Equity Loans, Car Loans, Business Seeding Loans, you name it. This lasted for over a week - over a hundred letters in total, clearly a harassing tactic in response to my complaints.

That was three years ago and I continue to receive dozens of pieces of junk mail from this fifth rate company every month. They are a pack of predatory vultures and I seriously caution anyone considering engaging them for purposes credit repair.

Avoid Capital One Credit Cards - Bad For Your Credit!!!

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- WARNING: DO NOT USE CAPITAL ONE CREDIT CARDS (Venture Card). I had the CapitalOne Venture card for 4 years for the promise of no annual payment, no foreign transaction fee, and award miles for Travel. First of all, they ran my credit twice on the application - which does negatively affect your credit score - and then could do nothing to fix it. When that ordeal was done with and I was excited that I had used the card and built up a little more than 35,000 award points to redeem I was disappointed to discover that they were next to useless, and far less valuable than advertised and hoped.

I might been OK with the fact that I was getting next to nothing out of the loyalty program (where anywhere else 35,000 miles was enough for a round trip ticket in the US and then still have 10,000 miles to spare) since I didn't have to pay anything to keep the card open, but then the customer service, was absolutely awful. By far the most unprofessional people I have ever spoken with, and didn't even care to assist me with an error they made because I made a payment after day-30 on my account -€“ which they automatically report to a collections agency the day that you do not send payment, so it immediately affects your credit score.

Word of advice, if you are going to use this card, be very careful to never be even a day late, because your rates will instantly skyrocket (despite what they might tell you when you'€™re signing up for the account). They cannot reverse it, one it is sent to collections, and will not warn you no matter how many hears you have been there, or how small the amount.

I recently went through this over $7.25. Frustrating to say the least when there is not so much as a call or letter advising that a payment is past due after having had an account with them and paying on-time, in full for over 4 years. They have my email, my cell, and my address, and advised that they do not notify you unless you specifically requested to receive these types of notifications in advance, and they do not care about hitting your credit score, even if you are just one day late on the month, regardless of the reason.

There are a lot of great credit card options out there, and tons with travel benefits, no annual fee, nor foreign transaction fees. Use a company that you can trust. Personally, I love Wells Fargo or Chase and will keep my accounts there. Even the credit cards that do have the annual fee are worth it, just for the piece of mind that you and your finances are in good hands. AVOID CAPITAL ONE AND PROTECT YOUR FINANCES AND CREDIT.

Awful Company to Deal With - Never Sent Me a Bill
StarEmpty StarEmpty StarEmpty StarEmpty StarBy -
Rating: 1/51

I have a Capital One 360 savings account that I am closing because of how awful the Capital One Credit Card treats people. I would have never believed this would happen to me. I went to use my card and found that it was in collections. I had paid my card off 8 months prior and had the card sitting to the side. They allowed deductions to be made to my card and never sent me a paper bill. It came to me via email which since I have the other account with them had been automatically filtered to my savings folder. They did not try to collect the money owed from me - I never received a phone call. It turned out that these charges were auto deductions as I am told by the card services representative.

One of the auto deduction was from QVC and was for a two time purchase - in other words it came through 6 months after first purchase. This is not a charge you think about. It was a mistake on my part that I must have signed up for emails instead of paper but once you have a person who consistently pays on time why wouldn't a red flag pop up that something is wrong here? They wrote off the $$ amount and put my card in something called a charge off and then reported me for an n9.

To this day I have never seen a bill. I did pay the entire amount off immediately. However, they ruined my credit by not corresponding with me. I was someone who made payments regularly for large amounts $700-$1200 payoffs. Then 50-60$ charges start coming through and they don't shut my card down they let it build while no payments are made. Awful company to deal with - I wish I had known how bad that they were - I hope someone sues this company for what they do to people.

My theory is that they can write off non paid debt under $1000 and that they somehow get tax credit. It must be worth more to them to not collect and tarnish a persons credit record than to collect when it is such a minimal amount. I had an 8000$ credit limit with them and a perfect credit report. Please do not open a card with this company. They do not care about you. I am closing my savings account with this company.
