Not a Credit Card You Want
By -

I, like many others have been a long time holder of a Sears Card issued by Citi Bank - I pay my bills on time, and never miss a payment. Recently, I carried a small balance on the card for my business because they gave me a rate of 5.99%. I received my statement last week and was shocked to see that they were charging me 21.99% interest.

I called to complain and was told that was the rate, but I could cancel the card. Their attitude is that there is nothing they can do about the increase. Well, there was something I could do. I paid it off completely and will never again use the card. I will not give them the satisfaction of canceling it. That keeps that line of credit open on their books. If they value good customers then they shouldn't be trying to gouge and rape us.

I went out this week and opened a new card with a local bank. They too have rewards and a rate at 3.99-6% over prime which means a 6.99%-9% interest rate. I was approved for $10,000 the next day.

My advice is to do business with your local and regional banks. They do want your business and will value you as a customer. It is time for all of these big gangster banks to go. Capital One did the same thing. Write to Pelosi, Dodd, and your legislators and complain to them as well. They need to cut these big banks off NOW and support the small banks.

Rate Increase

I called in and opted out like so many others have of the rate increase 9% to 16.99%. I am a little angry about the whole situation. I was thinking of some way to get back at them for this. I know if I use the online billing and receive a paperless statement, it cost the company about 50% less to process.

I do this with all of my credit cards because I want the company to succeed and pass that savings on to the consumer with lower rates. That is not happening with CITI. I am suggesting to everyone I know who receives a paperless statement to switch back to paper.

Unacceptable Credit Card Rate Increase

I received a letter from Citibank stating my credit card interest rate was going from 8.9% to 15.9%. The letter stated that if I don't agree to the new rate I could call and opt out. I was mystified as to why this would be happening. I have a stellar credit rating, I've never missed a payment and I pay the balance in full every month.

I called the number mentioned in the letter and I was told by the representative that the rate hike was not due to my banking practices or credit issues, but that it was a "company wide" initiative. I asked if they could do anything about getting me a better rate than 15.9% and I was told they could probably offer me a better rate, but it would still be higher than the original 8.9% rate. At that point I was so frustrated that I just told them to cancel the card.

If anyone wants to keep their cards, I suggest calling Citibank to see if you can negotiate a lower interest rate even if they've told you in writing that it's going up. They seemed willing to drop it a bit, but like I stated, they were not willing to set it at the original rate. Personally, I opted out just out of principle.

Billing Dispute Nightmare

MIAMI, FLORIDA -- Don't believe that you are protected by using a credit card. Any receipt you sign whether you receive the merchandise or not, YOU ARE LIABLE! Do not sign a credit card receipt without reading the fine print or knowing what the return policy is in the store. I was defrauded for $1700 because I signed a credit card receipt and did not receive the merchandise. Citibank will not protect you. All they do is verify that it your signature and if it is a face to face transaction, you have no recourse.

Take it to small claims court. The laws are different from the credit card companies. Citibank does not care about the consumer. You can write all the letters you want. They will reply, but you will have a difficult time. The most you will get is $50 if they do not resolve the problem in time.

Citi Card rip off

KENTUCKY -- I have had a credit card with Citi Card for over 20 years, I injured my back almost 4 years ago and had to stop working. I know this is not their problem, but where is the human compassion? My husband still works but we struggle without my income. Long story short I was late 2 times and they raised my interest rate to almost 30%. I was at an interest rate of 14% - how can they raise it that much for just being late two times this past month.

I sent them a check for more than half of my balance and do you know they still would not lower my rate. I should have kept the money just to make sure that I was on time with my payment every month then they would have lowered it. IF YOU are CONSIDERING using CITI for anything please RE-CONSIDER - THEY will screw you over!!!

Trying to Get Extremely High Interest Rate Reduced

SIOUX FALLS, ILLINOIS -- I just had an online conversation to get my extremely high interest rate of 22.99% reduced. Stay away from Citibank as far as you can. If you carry a balance on your card even when you pay as required and more they are not willing to reduce your interest rate from this unethical 22.99% (with a credit score in the 700s).

Statements Have No Information

The Citibank credit card statements do not show where all of my payment is applied. It shows interest only and I don't feel it is my job to keep the last statement, do some calculations and try and figure it out (it never computes anyway). For such a large bank shouldn't they have a concise clear statement that accounts for each penny I send them?

My Wife Died. They Turned Our Account Over for Collection.

WALLA WALLA, WASHINGTON -- After my wife died of breast cancer, I continued to pay the payments on our card (she was the primary card holder). I requested that they take her name off the account and a few months later, even after all my payments continued to be made, they turned the account over for "Recovery".

Thank You Citibank!

Thank you Citibank for being unlike the other credit card companies in that you haven't tried to gouge the consumer by raising your rates to ridiculous amounts, lowering credit limits or closing established accounts. You will keep my business and I will recommend you to others as being the most consumer friendly credit card company that I have worked with.
