GE Appliances Break in 3 Years
By -

DENVER, COLORADO -- A short 3 years ago I had a house built, and since the contractor had a deal going with GE, we were told to pick amongst the GE line. Thus all of our appliances are the top o' the line Stainless Steel GE Profile Appliance. This past week, 2 major appliances failed. The refrigerator panel stopped working. The washer read "We detect a problem with this washer", and would not turn on.

Call GE Cares, who scheduled a tech almost a week later. The tech, who had an attitude from the moment I answered the door, was evasive and rude. Bottom line, I was told that the clutch on the washer went $325 to repair, and the motherboard on the frig needed to be repaired, only $100 (plus of course the almost $100 to come to my house). I told him to do the motherboard and forget the $325 clutch. Suddenly, the clutch dropped to $210.

OK, do both. While he was repairing the units, I did some research. Turns out the motherboards are defective, and GE is repairing them for free. Surprise Mr. Repairman. Well he was none too happy, and all of a sudden after an hour with the washer, another part is needed for the washer and he can't return for another week, but to pay for it anyway. Of course I refused -- it wasn't fixed, and I don't trust anything he says. He now really had an attitude.

When I told him I was paying for the refrigerator and I was calling his supervisor, he stormed out the door, leaving it wide open. Wouldn't give me his name, nor the mystery part that needs to be ordered. Not sure what's going on -- sounds like games are being played. I will never buy another GE appliance, it's LD for me from now on.

Outraged and Disgusted

NEW JERSEY -- We purchased a GE Profile Harmony Washing Machine and dryer in June 2006. We went all out financially buying the extended warranty etc. due to the amount of time we do laundry. There are 5 people in our family and laundry is a part of our every day. 16 months later, the washing machine stops working. Three weeks later, 2 completed service calls (a new motor and a new clutch were installed), 2 cancelled service calls (cancelled by GE), missed work, hours on the phone trying to get help, and trips to a laundromat (at $50 a trip) we still do not have our washing machine!!!

I spoke with a customer relations person today who told me in her exact words, "There AIN'T nobody here that can help you!!" As a family we will NEVER buy a GE appliance again. We had better luck with our $400 washing machine made by a no name company and it actually lasted for 10 years! Friends told us to buy LG appliances and I think we should have listened. Another customer relations person called to cancel our second service call because their techs were just too busy with warranty work.

My husband said, "That does not say much about your products," and her response was "Well, sir I have to agree with you on that!!!" What a company!! So after all of this I will be off to the laundromat soon, and we are scheduled for another service call five days from today (3 weeks without a washing machine)! Let's see if they keep this appointment and actually FIX the machine this time! I have never written a "complaint" of any kind in my entire life. I am so outraged at how we have been treated by GE as a company. I just wanted to let people know that they have terrible customer service!

Had trouble from the beginning, dishes came out hazy and when I called GE, they said to use the recommended detergent. I did; dishes came out hazy and smelled like detergent. They messed around long enough with that and getting someone out to fix the controls which did not work properly until enough time lapsed, I could not get a refund. The dishwasher turned itself on after a power outage, it was not running when the power went out and was running non-stop for God knows how long before it was noticed. This happened at Thanksgiving time and they had service out at 6 weeks so had to do Thanksgiving dishes by hand; after that they postponed another 2 weeks.

Got a replacement dishwasher thanks to Home Depot Manager. The dishes come out stinky and hazy, sometimes there is visible soap residue on the glassware. I have even ran the dishes through a second no detergent cycle and still had residue on the dishes. The controls do not work. We have to turn power on and close the door 3 or 4 times before it will come on. We are afraid to leave the circuit breaker on when we leave as we are unsure if it will start on its own like the first one did. It is also the worst designed layout for loading any dishes.

This is totally unacceptable as soap residue causes intestinal difficulties and you should not have to be afraid that your dishwasher will take on a life of its own and start. I highly recommend you do not waste your money on this dishwasher. GE has extremely poor custormer support. Home Depot support was great. This make two GE Profile Dishwasher in less than a year and two strikeouts. They will not get the chance for a third out, we are getting a Kitchen Aid.

JASPER, GEORGIA -- Our 4.5 yr old GE dryer quit drying completely. Called a local serviceman that repairs GE machines. He misdiagnosed the problem (control board) on Saturday. He called on Monday; indicating that the control board was no longer available! I found it online & overnighted it to us. We installed ourselves on Tuesday. The problem not fixed, called GE 800 repair; our area is served only Tues & Thurs. Ask the technician be scheduled for Thursday. He arrived, analyzed the dryer; disassembled the machine; replaced a thermostat (total 195.93); indicated he had 3 new service calls on his afternoon schedule.

We washed some clothes & loaded the dryer. It runs the cycles but no heat=no drying (Tks - Don78); should check your repair before leaving. Called the GE 800 number again Friday morning requesting a repairman come back. Service employee said that it would be Tuesday before a serviceman would be in the area. Accepted another Tuesday appointment. My wife called a second time hoping we could get a serviceman to come back on Friday. GE response: "we'll see what we can do". No service followup or call about our status of needing service.

Conflict of our personal business schedule caused us to cancel the Tuesday appt. but immediately asked for a Thursday appt. Thursday arrives, somewhere between 8 to 5 possible service. We watch & watch; GE scheduling computer keeps calling with automated verification somewhere between 8-5. Thanks a lot, very definite information. Finally, serviceman calls/arrives 2:30-3:00pm. Listens to machine, analyzes blower problem, but does not have it on his truck (damn too bad). Have to order it; return possibly Monday? He's not supposed to be working this area on that day??

What gives????? The GE definition of customer service is: just keep waiting, we will eventually analyze the problem, find the part and return based on their service schedule. GOOD LUCK selling me another major GE APPLIANCE.

GE Profile Dishwasher

Purchased this dishwasher 12/3/10. It was defective - dishes weren't getting cleaned or dried (despite using recommended detergent & Jet Dry). Called for service & was told they would be out between 8-12. Nobody showed up - called GE that afternoon and they said "oh, nobody called you? He called in sick". Rescheduled for the next week, the guy showed up & told us 'instead of using 3/8" flexible tubing, get 1/2" tubing' and left!!! Put in 1/2" tubing - didn't fix it - still not working (dishes still dirty & not drying).

So we decided to take GE up on their offer that stated "if I am not completely satisfied that my new dishwasher has the best wash and dry performance and lowest sound of any dishwasher I have ever owned, GE will pick up the dishwasher and refund the full purchase price to me." Called to schedule a pick up. They were supposed to be there between 12-4; once again, nobody showed up. I tried to call, but couldn't get through. 9:00 that night, my doorbell rings - it's GE here to pick up the dishwasher. (Would not have been so mad, if they had called to say they would be that late). They gave me a refund check of the purchase price LESS $75.00.

Called GE the next day and they said "too bad - that's how we do it". I tried getting help from GE Consumer Relations - faxed things over numerous times and was told that "finance charges, removal of previous dishwasher and de-installation costs are not covered." We had uninstalled the dishwasher & it was waiting for them on the porch.

So not only did I purchase a defective dishwasher, take 3 mornings/afternoons off from work trying to get things fixed, I had to pay GE $ 75.00 to do it! Very disgusted! I have tried to get the $75.00 back, but GE won't do it. I am truly disappointed in both GE's product quality and customer service. We have purchased GE products before and used to be happy with them. I will not be buying anymore GE products though.

GE Profile Gas Dryer Won't Dry
By -

After using my GE harmony Profile Gas Dryer for over 1.5 years, the blower stopped blowing and no heat (good thing). I took off the cover and found a wiring diagram of the system. To my shock and disbelief, I realized the complexity of their system. I saw what appeared to be a separate motor control system for the blower. This is a ridiculous design.

I am a product development engineer specializing in brush-less DC motor drives. These types of drives are my career, but everything has its place. This is not the place to design a complex motor drive system. The components are very expensive and the only way to trouble shoot problems is to substitute new parts. This leads to an unbelievable expense.

After paying over $1100.00 (I think) for the dryer, every repairman suggests that I throw it away and buy a bottom line Maytag or Whirlpool dryer or a rebuilt one for about $150. They can be repaired for under $100, the parts are readily available and can be fixed with a screwdriver and minimum of technical prowess. A minimal investigation on the number of similar problems with this dryer has brought me to the conclusion that these dryers is a major design FUBAR.

I would highly recommend all those out there to NEVER, NEVER buy one of these dryers. I am very curious to know if the G. E. Quality Control Field Failure Report is available to the public. And, it is highly unlikely, but I would like to get my hands on a schematic of this motor drive circuit and do my own failure analysis. I purchased a motor drive PCB from GE and it did not solve the problem. The other fail mode would be the motor itself or the connections between the motor drive and/or the position sensors.

GE Profile Upright Washers

Energy Star, which was important to me, but never dreamed the GE Profile Up Right washer would be such a piece of crap. Sure you save water and if you live in a Death Valley Desert area that has to use rain water as the ONLY source of water, you might like this washer better. But for ANYBODY that needs their clothes clean, this is not the washer for you. You are instructed to lightly arrange clothes around the drum so as not to cover the center, being careful not to stack above the holes in the stainless steel drum. But what they fail to tell you is that if you do this, your clothes will never get wet enough to be cleaned properly.

This washer is nothing more than a front-loading washer turned on its back but twice as deep and it could never possibly wash the load the machine will hold. I bought my machine in October 2009 and when it is paid off, I intend on returning to the same store to purchase a different make of washing machine BECAUSE it does no good to call companies like GE to complain. They train their people to never accept responsibility for the product being a lousy design and that it is always something the consumer is doing wrong.

I cannot afford expensive mistakes like this so I will never buy another GE appliance for as long as I live. Post note: my neighbor tried to warn me about GE but I wouldn't listen; I was stupid. He bought a dishwasher that would not clean the dishes and when he called to complain about the problem GE asked, “Are you pre-washing the dishes first?” He never pre-washed before with his previous dishwasher - that is called re-direction, make the poor performance of the appliance the fault of the customer.

Poor GE Customer Relations

I purchased a GE Profile washer (model no. WRPB8050D1WW) in early 2006. This past winter it started leaking badly, had to replace the transmission and motor (which was damaged by transmission locking up). It took a couple of months to get replaced due to lack of communication between GE and repair shop. Machine was repaired in March 2009. June 2009 machine is leaking again. Transmission and motor replaced again. Washed one load and leaking again. Contacted repair shop and informed outer tub would have to be replaced - nothing said about this when transmission/motor replaced.

GE sent outer tub but when tried to get installed informed by GE and repair shop that a shroud was bent and machine not repairable. Again nothing mentioned previously concerning shroud. When I contacted GE and wanted to know why shroud was not mentioned previously, they said it was bent after 2nd motor/transmission installed. I wanted to know how anyone knew that since no one has examined machine since motor/transmission installed. They could not answer, but would offer me $70 off on a new machine.

I want 3 year old machine repaired but GE refuses. They will only offer me the $70 off on new machine, I deal I can beat by going to the local Lowe's during a sales event. Which I did and bought a Samsung washer. I realize GE is much more than the appliance department, but if rest of company is operated same way no wonder their stock has tanked the past few years. Never again will I buy GE.

One other thing. When I mention to the relations MANAGER that if she thought GE made such great appliances she need to Google GE reviews and see the number of complaints. She informed me that she had a life and did not have the time to get on the internet for such things. Seems to me that a CUSTOMER RELATIONS MANAGER would want to know the opinions of customers, but at GE apparently not!

Serious Accident Hazard

My husband and I own a Motor Home and the GE Profile Microwave/Convection Oven is my source for cooking. We have in the past primarily used the appliance as a microwave, but now that we are using the Coach a few months in the summer we are using the baking feature in the oven more. The oven feature of the appliance is certified for temperatures from 225 degrees to 450 degrees. Once the oven temperature is set for any temperature over 350 the plastic tabs that hold the oven rack in place melt and the rack falls in the oven.

Last week I was making baked beans in the oven when I heard a crash. The tabs had once again melted with the temperature set at 375 and I had scalding beans all over the interior of my oven. I had to shut the oven down and wait for it to cool prior to taking on the challenge of cleaning the interior of the oven. New tabs for the oven are readily available through the parts department at the cost of $4.00 a tab plus shipping, but any time I want to use my oven feature - it is at the cost of a minimal $8.00 for new tabs plus the risk of scalding or getting burnt.

We called GE Consumer Services and since my oven is 4 years old they expressed little to no interest - only that they could send a repairman out. I haven't a clue what that is going to prove, since we have already tested the temperature with an oven thermometer and it is right on the temperature. So I guess it will cost me $79 to have the serviceman come out to tell me there is nothing that he can do.

GE clearly has a part problem with this appliance that has a very serious potential of causing injury/scalding and they offer no answers. It is apparent that the plastic tabs that are being used in my model clearly will not withstand the certified heat. This is not a matter of one bad or defective part, yet all replacement parts that I order have the same result.

It is ridiculous that I have to now consider replacing my microwave that has probably less than 20 hours of total use in 4 years. It was also extremely surprising to me that GE Consumer Relations had little to no interest in the reporting of a defect that can clearly cause injury from proper documented use.

Never buy a GE appliance (or product for that matter) again
By -

Less than 2 years ago, I bought 5 appliances through GE as a promotion through the builder of my new home. I should have known from the start when my appliances arrived a week late that this company was bad news. My first problem came with the bottom freezer mount profile fridge. Everything in the fruit and veg drawers was freezing.

When I called the so called service department, their solution was to put duct tape on the back vents. They would not send a service person as this could be fixed with tape. Next my profile dishwasher, the wheel on the bottom tray (the one that holds plates, cutlery etc.) broke off within a month making it nearly impossible to push back in.

My stove also profile, has a faulty internal thermometer which makes cooking times like Russian roulette. I have had many a dinner party ruined because of this malfunction. My profile dryer broke within a couple of months, this problem they fixed free of charge as it fell within the first year of warranty. The actual drum inside the unit had broken.

Most recently my washer the last of the 5 appliances has stopped pumping water back out. I have called to complain and was told GE does not take complaint calls. I was given a web address and told to file my complaint there and someone would get back to me in 48 hours. That was over a week ago. I called again today and had a rude man tell me there is nothing I can do but keep emailing.

The service reps are horribly rude and make you feel like an annoyance. No one is willing to help. I find it crazy that a company as large as GE does not have a complaints department.

I also find it odd that in the day and age where social media is becoming the new thing in marketing, a company like this would allow complaints to go unaddressed so that their frustrated customers can litter the web with horror stories about their products.
