Rip Off and Thieving Bank

I was happy with Provident Bank. I was never charged an overdraft fee by Provident Bank. Provident was sold to the loan shark bank M&T. I have direct deposit, and every week I am getting slammed with "overdraft fees". For this month only I have $ 570 in overdraft fees alone! I deposit checks and then a partial amount is put on hold and a partial amount is made available in the "available" balance.

Unlike other bank the held amount is not disclosed in online banking and neither are you told when it will be available. Different bank employees are not on the same page regarding procedures and policies. Most of the employees are rude and condescending and treat people as if they should not be asking questions about their own bank accounts. We have a business and wanted to open a business account but we will take our business to SunTrust.

There is something very sorry about the backend transactions they are performing to cause account to overdraw. I am also at a loss at how a transaction whose payment was swiped on the check card several weeks before, gets debited last that one I did last week whose amount was larger. The larger more recent transaction get processed first so that all the other smaller item will overdraw the account and then get assessed late fees. This is supposed to be a free checking with direct deposit. They have it to a science since they know how much comes in every direct deposit. This bank is robbing customers and should be prosecuted.

My son called in for the payoff on his truck. They can discuss the account status but can't give him the amount. So he calls me 2700 miles away. I call and I get "we can't give you that amount without the VIN number to verify the loan is the right one." I only have one with them and never a freaking again. DON'T GET A LOAN WITH THEM. They tell you can get info online. NOT ON AN AUTO LOAN, why is it the only one you can't get. HMMMM. They are the people they can scam more… My mom was to be the co-signer, but she is the only one on the loan. I have complained for 5 years and they say it will show on my credit that I paid this loan. NOT.

VIRGINIA -- I have automatic payments from my checking account to an overdraft line. Since M&T bought the bank I used, there seems to be endless creativity in finding ways to maneuver the customer into a late fee or service charge. I have a couple of carefully documented instances in which the bank took a larger payment than the billed amount. If I pay directly, in cash, less than 72 hours before the automatic payment is scheduled to come out, the payment "doesn't count," it takes the automatic payment anyway, and if my checking account balance won't cover the payment, I get an overdraft fee. The bank will not take available money from the overdraft line to cover this type of overdraft.

Paying cash into the checking account the day the payment is due also will not cover a potential overdraft, as the bank does not consider a cash deposit available until the next business day. Their so-called "customer service" reps treat complaints and appeals on these subjects as if I were a petulant five-year-old. When I pointed out to one of them that the bank's practices are quite likely illegal, she laughed at me and hung up. I fervently hope that one of these days they will lose a huge class action lawsuit for this crap. I understand it wouldn't be the first class action lawsuit they've lost over confusing and exploitive fees. Forget 'em!

Never Open Safe Deposit Box at M&T
By -

TOPTON, PENNSYLVANIA -- Do not open a safe deposit box at any M&T Bank. If you do or already have one, make sure that you never close out a safe deposit box before your paid up year/annual fee is up. While most other banks will prorate a refund for the portion of the year that remains. M&T Bank does NO refund.

I had a safe deposit box with them for many years. The $125 annual box fee was paid in full in January. This fee is also quite large for the non-metro location. The box was closed out in mid-March -- approximately $90 they keep. The "theft" of this is that they can still rent the box during the time that remains of my $90 and make an additional $90. The "customer service" staff just kept repeating the "company line." What a convenient way to make a substantial profit. This is true double dipping.

Hidden and All of a Sudden "Debit Fee"
By -

Recently I was hit with a "€œdebit fee"€ when I transferred my money from M&T bank to another bank online. They never have any fees like that. And as far as I know, other banks (PNC, Bank of America) do not have any debit fee€ like that too. After contacting M&T bank, I was let know that they sent me a secured message in M&T system about 3 weeks before the fee started to apply.

WHY M&T not send me a physical letter to my address to let me know any fee structure change. I do NOT receive my statement online. What will happen to the customers that does not use M&T online banking. How do they supposed to know that? If M&T wants to save cost to send letter, at least M&T should call me or email an message to my email address. I am closing all of my 3 year old accounts with M&T today and switch my direct deposit to PNC bank.

Not enough cash on hand
By -

NEW YORK -- On more than one occasion I have presented a check to our local M&T Bank branch to be told they don't have enough cash on hand to cash it. Yes, the check is good, the money is sitting in our M&T account. Due to cost cutting measures they no longer keep excess cash in the bank. $2500 is not that much cash! I've been told I can drive 20 miles to another branch and try cashing it there or give them a week's notice and they could order the necessary cash. So if I write a check to someone, even though the money is sitting in our M&T account, the bank will most likely tell them they have to go elsewhere to cash it.

Further frustrating is that when I asked who to complain to about this, I was told it would do no good because the changes were system wide, but I could mention it on their survey when I was offered one. I originally opened the accounts for convenience. Tell me again why I should put our money in M&T?

SCRANTON -- M&T Bank's ATM Machine... Sucks. I worked hard all week to get my money which I needed to put food on my table at your local Sheetz. I put my card in and entered my #s... my money came out for a split sec. I reached in my back pocket and the machine sucked my money back in... Now I have to wait 72 Hrs to get my own money back. This bank is not giving me my money back on top of things and then charged me another dollar to do a balance inquiry. Please let me know about any other complaints and if I can get something out of this company for all my aggravation.

Poverty Is Punishment.

M&T Bank is a joke. I've had my account with them for about 6 years and have overdrafted my account in the past, at my error and have no problem paying for them. Recently I've heard from former employees that they are told to try to get you for fees, and to prey on people who don't have $$. Well I've learned this was true, I only deposit $ in the bank to pay for my bills. Well I made a deposit at 2:05pm on a Friday and later that day paid 3 bills. By the next Wednesday I got a letter in the mail saying my account was overdrawn by almost $200.

When I went to the bank, I was told that $ I had deposited was after 2pm and they were running on the next business day and that it wasn't the bank's fault. I later found my terms and agreements letter and it stated that they don't switch to the next business day until 2:30pm. I went to the bank and showed her my letter and she 'pulled out her own' which also said 2:30pm. Needless to say I LUCKILY found a loophole and was credited for the overdraft fees, 'as a courtesy of the bank' and they put an alert on my account so that I could no longer receive any fee waivers. What kind of crap is that!!!???

Double Overdraft Fees
By -

CHAMBERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA -- I was recently charged $222 in overdraft fees. The items were not even paid so it cost the bank nothing. They charged me a fee for one item though the monies were there to pay for it. The money supposedly was on hold for something else. Then of course that made another thing overdraw. Then I was charged once again for the item that the money was supposedly on hold for in the first place. I'm so tired of this bank and their unlawful fees. I think that when customers are obviously having a hard time, Banks should try to help out not sock it to them.

Overdraft Charges
By -

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND -- I once had two accounts with M&T Bank. I used one for purchases and bill paying; the other I used primarily to transfer funds to an out of state account. Well, my problems began when I overdrew the first account. After accessing all the overdraft fees it could (fees on the two items paid and $10/day for 40 days) the bank closed the account and turned it over to collections.

Little did I know that they were planning to seize the money that was in the other account. So, the balance of that account was taken to pay the first, leaving insufficient funds to pay pending withdrawals. The ugly cycle began again... overdraft fees on the two items paid and $10/day charge for remaining in the negative. I tried to close the account, but was told that I couldn't until the account was no longer overdrawn. After all, why would the bank deny itself an opportunity to make an extra $80. Sinful!
