First Experience Was Lousy

NILES, OHIO -- My wife and I had never ate at a Buffalo Wild Wings and after our experience last night, I doubt that we ever go again!

It was at the Niles Ohio Location.

It is one of those restaurants that you sense that if you don't buy booze, then you do not get good service. We went in and got seated right away. Our waiter came to get our drink orders, and we told him this is the first time we had ever ate at a Buffalo wild wings. So all he did was point out the appetizer section, which we could read so that wasn't much help, the menu was kind of confusing, it did not say whether fries come with the sandwiches, the way it was listed, made it sound like it was the sandwich only. Our waiter answered our questions. We took a few minutes to look over the menu, then he came back.

My wife ordered a grilled chicken sandwich. Now the way the menu reads, you can have all of the veggies you want for free, then there is the cheese section and it says pick your cheese, does not say there is a charge for the cheese. Well, it didn't take long to get our order, My wifes sandwich was hot, I got the crispy chicken sandwich, and you would think it would be hot, since it is deep fried, lol, well, it was not even hot enough to melt the cheese. We bought requested mayo with our sandwiches, which we did not receive, we ask him where the mayo was and he said he would have to get it, I am sorry, but I would think when you order it for your sandwich, that it would either be on the sandwich or come out with the sandwich. Guess that is what I get for thinking. The fries were ok, mine wasn't hot either. We never seen our waiter again till we were done. Like I said, we mentioned we had never been to BWW before, so you would have thought he would have spent more time explaining the menu, that he would have checked on us, after a couple minutes to see how our meals where.

I had to flag someone down to get a refill on my water. My wife couldn't eat all of her sandwich, she doesn't eat a lot at each meal and she had the rest of her sandwich wrapped up in a napkin and he did not even ask if she wanted a to-go-container or baggie or anything. Then when we got the check, he charged us 60 cents for the free cheese. He did not thank us for coming in or even ask how we liked our meals.

Like I said, we mentioned that we had never been to a BFF before, so you would have thought he would have been a little more attentive to make our first time a great experience. We always tip really good, but we base it on how attentive our wait staff are. It really wasn't even that busy, and they had lots of staff, so there was no excuse. Maybe it is that way at all of them, maybe it is just this location, but I am sorry, when your first visit sucks, it makes you not want to go to another one. Maybe in a few months we will try another location and see how it goes, but at this point, We do not want to go back to any.

Not sure why, but it seems that bar/restaurants are offended if you do not buy booze, after all that is where they make their biggest profit, but, hey, not everyone drinks booze, I know, I know, we are in the minority in that area, lol.

Buffalo Wild Wings is one of my favorite places to eat! I've never had a bad experience there, in fact, I've always had great service and even better food!

BWW is the only remaining chain I frequent, due to lousy service at numerous other chains. However, even there I have had a few bad experiences where I sat ignored for a long time, or was served food that was spicy when it was not supposed to be. You may or may not be right about the booze. I concur with your thoughts regarding first impressions.

My biggest complaint about BWW was that it's too loud in there! The last time we ate there was the night I was discharged from the hospital after Baby Clutzy was born 5 years ago. She had to stay in for an extra day or two, so it was a sort of last meal for us. While we were sitting there having our eardrums blown out by the racket, I leaned over to Hubby and screamed in his ear that we'd never be able to come in here once Baby C came home. I was right. We've never been back.

BWW's is really just like any other chain, it's a step above fasf food really, it's not fine dining by any means. Your expectations shouldn't be but so high.It doesn't sound like you had the most attentive waiter though. However if you didn't ask for a to-go container/doggy bag, then I wouldn't expect the waiter to bring one. Their menu does make is seem like the cheese is free though.

Coupon Not Allowed!

FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS -- Coupon stated 11:00 am to 2:00 pm for 10% off! We arrived 1:50 pm & there was no body in sight to seat us for 5 minutes! Finally, somebody showed up & seated us but it took 2-3 minutes for a waiter to show up. I showed the coupon & it was now 2:00 pm (I showed her my watch)... She said the order has to be placed before 2:00 pm & the coupon is not valid. Her Manager confirmed this & really didn't seem to care about "our problem". March 23, 2012.

Under the circumstances, an exception certainly seems to be in order.

Evidently, their system isn't set up to grant you the deserved exception. Either that or the manager isn't very smart, because it would be very silly to lose a customer over this. I'm going to ask at my local BBW next time I visit to see what they can/would do in this situation.

It's almost like they did it on purpose. i had a friend who made a Dominos driver wait and ring the door bell for 3 minutes before he would answer just so the driver wouldn't make that 30 minute or less window guarantee claim they use to make, and forced a discount.
Considering the wait time and obvious adamant attitude to not give you that 10% off, the more I think about it, the more I think the manager deliberately made sure his staff delayed your order til 2pm. Way to go BBW. Your cheap ways and tactics now are record on the internet permanently.

How on earth was the manager to know about their coupon when the OP walked in? Did they announce it from the door? Sounds like the OP didn't mention the coupon until the waiter showed up. As I said before, showing up 10 minutes before a special expires is cutting it rather close. True, the manager could have been a nice guy and given them the 10% discount, but they didn't have to.

If the manager knows the coupons are out there and that anyone walking in the door could have one, he might intentionally stall. But I think that's a little farfetched. Under the circumstances, and assuming this was not done intentionally, I think the manager should have honored the discount.

Well, that's the manager's prerogative. We don't know if the OP asked nicely or came off as having an attitude about it. I'm sure all of you can attest to being more accommodating when the requester is polite about making an exception, rather than demanding it as their inalienable right.

This is just a matter of customer service. I think it was foolish of the manager to make an issue of this and possibly lose a customer over a few seconds. It's hard to tell from the review if the OP was polite or demanding. Either way, it would have been good customer service to allow the discount under the circumstances.

If you show up a few minutes before a promo expires then I seriously doubt anyone is really going to care. They aren't paid enough really to go out of their way. If you are really nice about it maybe but still. My advice, keep the coupon and go again sometime.

Read through a few comments and I am kinda laughing that several people actual consider this might be a scam.

First of all I would wager that probably no more than 5% of all 11-2 customers actually use that coupon nation wide. (If that!)

Second of all no manager would fear such a coupon. 10%??? Really? No way. Even on a lunch check for 4 10% can't be more than a 3-6 bucks. I would imagine that coupon doesn't touch alcohol as most coupons can't discount drinks. Even if it did how much could this customer be saving? I would wager 5 bucks tops.

Look, coupons are issued by corporate. When a store takes in a coupon, corporate credits the store for the discount. Therefore managers don't fear coupons UNLESS the coupon is out of it's valid period. When a manager over-rides a coupon in a store that is invalid, then corporate will charge the store the amount thus hurting the manager.

For this reason I now believe that this customer either was presenting the coupon later than they state OR didn't present the coupon until the conclusion of their meal. Either way the indifference of the manager leads me to believe that the customer was presenting a coupon way out of line from it's valid point.

99% of managers would have accepted a coupon at 2pm there no question. So either the customer gave the staff an attitude that drove staff to not want to help them OR they are not being honest about when the coupon was presented.

This is no different than the endless debate over the posted time of a store's operational hours. Some contend that if a store's drive-thru has a sign posted open from 10am-10pm, then they are to serve the customer up until EXACTLY 10pm, regardless if they are closing down for the night. Following that same logic, then this restaurant should've honored that coupon up until EXACTLY 2:00pm, which is what the OP contests the time was precisely.

I too agree that the OP was cutting it kinda of close, but then again, who are we to judge what is "cutting it close"...5-minutes, 10-minutes, 15-minutes, 30-minutes, etc...? To eliminate the guesswork, the restaurant has a posted time of 11-2. That eliminates all speculation and therefore 2pm means exactly that...2pm. Common sense wasn't on the menu that day.

OK, so according to J4A, the manager should have honored the coupon since the OP was technically on the premises before the 2pm deadline. In theory, J4A is correct, especially if we use the argument that a restaurant that is open until 10pm should serve customers until 10pm. According to the OP, the manager said that the order had to be entered by 2pm. I think in order to decide who is the correct party in this situation, the OP or the manager, we would have to know what the fine print on the coupon said, if anything.

I vote deliberate sandbagging by the restaurant.

If it happens to be the computer-controlled cash register would not allow the discount is used as an excuse I call BS on that. Any POS (point of sale) system should allow overrides. If it does not then it is the other POS.

From the OP's comments (and that's all we have to go by), they didn't notify them of their order, let alone a coupon, until AFTER they were already seated.

Unless you're sandbagging theory suggests that to cover their bases, the manager colludes by having all customers delayed that come in anywhere close to the end of the time allotted for the special, just in case that's what they're ordering.

Just to be the devils advocate, suppose the customer sat down at the table at 10:58 and ordered. He then presents the coupon to the waiter and is told--"I am sorry but this coupon is no good" The bottom line here is--if we have all the facts--the restaurant was wrong.

Kahula - in your comment, you concluded that the OP must have done something wrong to deserve the treatment they received, which I find interesting.

Personally, I don't believe there is enough information in the complaint to know what happened. However, I'd proffer that if the POS terminal was not able to be overridden, it would be one explanation that doesn't involve indicting the OP.

Face it, 10% isn't that much of a discount depending on what is ordered and the manager made a bad decision. If the coupon wasn't allowed because of the timing the manager could have comp'd something else. Maybe the a couple of soda's or a side order of something. I am with BigAl's first comment. Pay for the food and skip the tip. Depending on how much the OP normally leaves as a gratuity to a server, they could have save more than 10%.

I picked up dinner tonight for the family. The order was ready within 15 minutes of my call, and when we arrived the cashier double checked the order with me, looking at each item, including the number and type of sauces. I was really impressed!

Good review. This is the chain I am currently "dining" at when I want a low cost meal. Generally speaking, the staff at mine has been excellent as well and pays attention to detail.

Tasteless food

LEESBURG, VIRGINIA -- As a first time patron, I was unhappy with the taste and quality of the food. The sauce was warm however the wings were cold. Not only were the wings cold they were also tough and difficult to chew. For an establishment to be known for wings, one would think this would be an area of expertise. The food tasted as though it had been from the night before. Being that we arrived at noon leads me to believe they wanted to get rid of the food from the day before. Each time I see the commercial I cringe because I ate there. I wish the ESPN zone never closed down because I would never have given this place a second thought. Overall the food SUCKS!!!!!!!

I haven't had takeout wings or orded them while dining out in years.

For one thing, they are too messy. I had a friend that was nearly blinded by sauce splashing in his one good eye and they are not that good for what they ask you to pay.

Huh. I get a dry rub coating on mine, so I can't complaint about too much sauce.

I eat there every 1-2 weeks. Usually the food is the right temperature and I have never found the chicken tough. I get the authentic version.

I'm sorry that you got turned off by BWW. I've had that happen at every single chain I have frequented, so it may be a matter of time.

PORTAGE, INDIANA -- I don't get it. Your food is served in paper products. you pay 7.99 for a flat bread with chicken and BBQ sauce. (Basically, 8 dollars for a taco shell with a couple ounces of chicken and BBQ sauce sets me off...) Wings are good, but they're chicken wings. How do you mess that up. I get the atmosphere. Its a sports bar. Sixty bucks for a family of four with one appetizer (Potato wedges) 18 piece wing and side of onion rings, cheeseburger, veggie burger, flatbread and four iced teas. That's 15 dollars a person to eat out of paper baskets. This is bar food at a outlandish medium high ticket price. Paying for the corporate atmosphere. Alternative: Take your 60 bucks, 15% tip and shop it around anywhere else. You can go to Red Lobster, get salad, biscuits, 4 seafood dinners (of sorts) real utensils, real plates and a WHOLE lot more bang for your buck. (Unfortunately they don't have 35 TVs)

The wings at BWW are sub-par.

The seafood at Red Lobster is also a joke. Granted, I live only a few miles from the ocean and can have fresh seafood anytime I want it, but still. It's kind of like telling an Italian that "Olive Garden" is authentic.

Maybe try a local, non-chain restuarant.

You have a family of four. Going out is going to be expensive for a large family no matter what. Even if you went to a movie, you would have paid 40 bucks for the tickets, plus whatever concessions you bought. You're paying for the entertainment and service. Thats the way it is. I'm sure the place had the prices clearly listed under each item. So unless you can't add, you should have known what your bill was going to be before you ordered.

Money is not the object with me. Eating there for the first time and then reviewing and suggesting more bang for your buck was the object. Do with that what you will. My honest opinion is that most all Nat'l chains are overpriced, have average food, average to below average service, and medium to high ticket prices. This review is good for most all the Natl. chains. How about this: Do your neighborhood a big favor eat, shop buy and support local. (while you still can)

Good advice ndrulez. The local joints never seem to be constrained to adhere to specific menus and/or recipes. I've only been to a BWW a couple of times and found, as you did, that they were pretty pricey for what you get and the flavor wasn't all that spectacular. Guess I still remember the days where you could get wings for 10 cents each and a pitcher of brew for a few bucks.

This is the third time that my wife and I have visited it BWW (627 Cross Keys Rd, Sicklerville, NJ), and just like each of my prior visits this one was no different. The first time we visited this location it was opening day so I expected that there would be a wait (which it was). Our second visit was on Thursday June 9th ($.60 boneless wing night) at which time we order takeout

Tuesday is Wing Night!

OKLAHOMA CITY, OKLAHOMA -- Okay let's do it. Let's talk about another 'win' for the customer. Last night my wife and step daughter wanted to go to Buffalo Wild Wings since they've never been there. I'm no fan of B-dubs but I love my wife and step daughter so what am I gonna do? Tell'em no?

We get seated, place our drink order then upon getting our drinks order our wings It's Tuesday, wing night, wings are 40 cents. Gotta like that. The OKC Thunder are on the big screens giving the Lakers all they can handle and them some. Excellent.

About five tall beers later the waitress comes by and asked if we're ready to place a food order. I tell her we already did about forty minutes ago. She shuffles through her pad and says oh yeah. The kitchen's really backed up although I could tell she was lying and that she had never turned in our order. So I say, Come on now be honest you never turned our order in did you? She says, yeah I did. I said no you didn't. Hey, people make mistakes. It happens. But don't lie to me. Through a sheepish smile she finally admitted she didn't turn in our order.

She brings the wings out. We had to send two orders back since they had the wrong sauce. Anyway four more tall ones later the bill arrives.

I told the waitress there will be no tip because of the service. She kind of frowned but seemed to understand. I then said, however I'll give you as a tip half of any amount you can get discounted off my check due to the little order snafu. She says, okay.

The manager comes over profusely apologizing for the service. Tells me that tonight's visit is on the house. Good man. The check came to about 80 bucks. I'm a man of my word so I left two 20's on the table for the waitress and off I went.

This what I call a 'win-win'. I got my food and drink for half off and the waitress got a fat tip. Best part of it all is that I didn't have to vent my complaint to the manager. The waitress did it for me.

Chalk another one up for the customer!

It's Oklahoma beer which does not exceed 3.2% alcohol by law. It was also over a period of three hours. That's like 1.5 beers an hour in Texas. I was more bloated than buzzed.

I said in the first paragraph that I didn't want to go. I had no choice in the matter. The thirteen year old and I live by a simple axiom. If mamma ain't happy then nobody's gonna be happy. I like being happy. I do all I can to be happy even if that means eating chicken armpits. That's just the kind of giving thoughtful guy I am.

Sounds like you went there to drink, more than eat. I can understand if they did not bring your drinks, but the wings being late does not sound like a particularly bad thing. Note it was not you who initiated the conversation about where are the wings, but the waitress' request to take an order that raised the issue.

The waitress should have gotten a tip regardless of what occurred with the wings. You put that waitress in a spot where if she did what was best for the company, she lost money, and vice versa. Would you offer a kickback at the register to a cashier if she discounted your food?

JR, The service was far worse than I described in my review. Over half the drinks for our table I got from the bar myself having the bartender put the drinks onto our table tab and of course each trip to the bar I tipped the bartender. It wasn't the bad service that led me to say no tip it was the fact the waitress tried to BS me about not turning in the order. If she had been honest with a simple V8 head slap dang I forgot to turn your order in then all would have been forgiven. Like Judge Judy says, Don't pee on my leg and tell me its raining because that doesn't fly with me.

As far as her putting her own interests ahead of the companies well I simply refuse to take ownership of somebody else's decisions. I merely made the offer. Her and the manager accepted. That's just business.

personally i don't believe in stiffing someone just cos the service was crap

but i know there are others who feel it's appropriate and right.

for me... 15% for blah. and 18+ for good service

also good tips if the waitress is pregnant. (why the bias? cos hey, the baby has a right to be healthy before it pops out)

the only place i don't tip is when i'm in japan

in japan they pay the workers full wages so they don't have to rely on tips to reach minimum wage.


and yes some restaraunts are very pissy in the US when they have to pay the staff extra just to bring them up to minimum wage.

sure some will say "well if the service was better!!!" but this happens regardless of the lack of tip being punishment for "bad service" or just because the customer was cheap.

The manager handled that properly I think. I wouldn't have tipped the waitress THAT much but then, I don't blow 80 bucks at a wing joint then tip the waitress that fibbed to me either like you, big spender! (VH)

I just contacted the manager at this place.
It seems that Stewart, had gotten a little tipsy on pre dinner drinks and started flirting with the server which in her words "repulsed her"
to no end which explains why she was in no hurry to go back to his table to be gawked at some more(good for her).
Stewart started making a big scene about the service so the manager decided to give him the discount to get him out of there, hence him tipping the server after all that due to GUILT and SHAME. Sad.

anyway 80 is a bit much for wings in my opinion

tho with drinks i guess that can run your bill up.

i personally prefer the Anchor bar however since they're reputed to be the source of the original buffalo wing. maybe the next time im in buffalo i'll get some.

While I do make a decent baked buffalo wings as the insist, my fried then dipped wings are pretty decent as well.
