Unwashed hands
Posted by Tamelablue on 10/26/2009
LYNWOOD, CALIFORNIA -- I went to Carl's Jr. restaurant to buy a spicy chicken sandwich on October 22, 2009. I went to use the restroom before I order my sandwich. This was around 8:20 a. m., I was waiting in the bathroom, for a lady to finish using the toilet. The lady came out of the stall after flushing the toilet, she was an employee of the restaurant, she left the bathroom without washing her hands, over the sink it says employees wash your hands she didn't. I use the restroom wash my hands and left the bathroom. The employee who didn't wash her hands went into the kitchen, the place that you prepared the food. I asked to talk to her and told her, you are suppose to wash your hands before you leave the bathroom. She made some excuse that she doesn't like to wash her hands when someone is in the bathroom. I asked the cashier for the customer service number for Carl's Jr. She said she didn't know the number, and that the number wasn't in the restaurant. I have to check the computer for the telephone number to call customer service and complaint, the lady who answer the phone said she would make a report, this Carl's Jr. is located in the city of Lynwood, Ca. on Imperial Hwy and Martin Luther King Blvd. I think people need to know this, so their health and life would protected. This is a public safety issue.

Sounds like a Seinfeld episode. Very disgusting; I hope you didn't eat there, and I hope you follow up with your complaint. I have never heard of someone afraid to wash their hands in front of someone else; this lady sounds a little crazy.

Is it not entirely possible that she didn't USE the bathroom? She could have gone into the stall to fix her bra or change shirts or yada yada. Maybe she is allergic to the soap and has her own. I always flush whether I pee or not. It is a habit.

It is also possible that she washed her hands when she was n the kitchen. Unless you could clearly SEE her every move you don't know.

The fact that you made a comment to her makes you look ridiculous. You are NOT her mother or her employer. Complain if you like, but you could have been wrong.

It is entirely possible that she had ALREADY used the bathroom and forgot to flush and was doing so when you came in. Further, you probably startled her when you said something about it.

Me, I would have told you to MYOB. But that is me.

They serve the lunch menu that early in the morning?
Posted by emmac on 2009-10-26:
whatever ladyscot. Whatever reason you're in the stall for doesn't matter. You still come in contact with millions of bacteria. Isn't there a sign on the wall that says all employees must wash your hands? I think reporting the problem is the only right thing to do. When I took my food handlers course they said more illnesses and sicknesses are contracted in restaurants from employees not washing their hands than improperly cooked food. I say kudos to you. You'll never know how many people you just protected.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
Em, the point is that UNLESS you could see her every move when she went into the kitchen, you don't KNOW that she DIDN'T wash her hands.

Aside from that, maybe she had a little bottle of hand sanitizer in her pocket.

Posted by memoryx57 on 2009-10-26:
That's pretty disgusting. I wouldn't care if she used the bathroom then washed..forgot to flush and then went back. She should STILL wash her hands again..Touching anything in a bathroom and then handling food ( or anything having to do with food or food prep ) without washing is unsanitary period. There is NO EXCUSE good enough to not wash your hands after having been to the bathroom. It's a big deal and the employers think it's a big deal ( reason for the signs ) and so does the Health Dept. You did the right thing by reporting it.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
Memory, the OP doesn't know the employee didn't wash her hands. Only that she didn't in the bathroom. The signs say wash you hands before returning to work. NOT wash your hands HERE before returning to work.
Posted by memoryx57 on 2009-10-26:
LS, then why the sign in the bathroom if they don't expect you to wash your hands WHILE you're in the bathroom...Like I said earlier there is NO EXCUSE good enough. I stand by my comment. And I would be willing to bet that the Health Dept would see it the same way.
Posted by emmac on 2009-10-26:
Ladyscot. You are right she may have had sanitizer but wouldn't you rather have someone double check then end up with hepatitis?
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
Em, I guess I mind my own business to much to worry what everyone else is doing.
Posted by emmac on 2009-10-26:
MYOB or apathy?
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
em, perhaps both. The fact is the Op doesn't know the girl didn't wash her hands. Just that she didn't in the bathroom.

What if there were no soap? Would the wet hands have been any cleaner?
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
The sign in the bathroom that all employees must wash hands before exiting isn't just a request it's part of the California health code. It doesn't matter what the employee did in the bathroom they are required by code to wash their hands before exiting the bathroom.

There's no excuse for an employee not following California health code regulations. This is considered a major violation by the California Department of Public Health.

You know, it would really bother me if I was in the restroom and observed an employee not washing her hands before leaving. Even if she adjusted her undergarments I would think if nothing else when she saw other individuals in the restroom would have washed her hands if no more than appearances.

I've seen this in places you wouldn't believe. Women walking out of the stall and back to their table in a fine restaurant. It made me ill and those women didn't have anything to do with food service. There are truly some nasty people out there. Observe it in an airport terminal the next time you are there and it will make your stomach churn. It's bad enough in a local establishment.

Employee or no employee, EVERYONE should wash their hands when using a public restroom! ! !

One time when I was at Bingo, the woman who was working in the kitchen was in the restroom the same time I was and she came out of the stall and walked right out the door without washing her hands. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeel the Basher couldn't just look the other way, knowing she was going to be cooking and serving other people. So, I went to the window of the kitchen where the people were lined up to order. I said, "Excuse me, excuxe me" as I made my way to the front of the line and told the woman in charge of the kitchen as I pointed to the guilty party, "Your cook over there, Irene, just used the bathroom and walked out without washing her hands and I don't think she should be working in the kitchen if she can't wash her hands"...what was the response of the woman in charge? "Oh, well we are all just volunteers" and I said, "If that's your answer, you're all more than just volunteers, you're all a bunch of pigs" and I walked away and half the line left the window. Do I care if I embarrassed anyone? Do you think I care if they were Nuns or not? No, I don't.

With H1N1 going around, people need to wash there hands no matter what.

I was at Carls today to try the new chicken sandwich they had. And I saw the lady preparing my food she sneezed but she sneezed the other way on her shirt that’s good hygiene skills.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2009-10-26:
Sneezing on their shirt while cooking food...I have plenty of issues about that! Geesh...what's WRONG with people???
They need to do all of their sneezing BEFORE their shift begins and hold it until break time and use a Kleenex, then wash their hands.

I rather them sneeze on their shirt then my food, or on their hands.

Posted by Principissa on 2009-10-26:
Good gracious, I don't care if the woman was adjusting undergarments or simply fixing her makeup, they have a sign up for a reason, the rule applies to all employees not just some of them. I don't care if she did wash her hands in the kitchen, she was in the bathroom and disregarded what in some places is a state law posted on the wall.
Posted by Starlord on 2009-10-26:
I don't know about California's health laws, but both Arizona and Washington require handwashing often. You may use sanitizer as an adjunct, but only after initially washing your hands. The hands MUST be washed after coming into contact with ANY possible contaminant. This includes one's hair, face, underwear, parts of cooking equipment which are NOT part of cooking surface, money, etc. Sanitizer is good, but it is not accepted as a substitute for handwashing, but as a complement to it.

My nephew coughed last night and I told him he needs to cover his mouth when he coughs. His response was "But then I'll get germs on my hands." I told him "yes, but then you wash your hands afterwards." In an hour, he must've washed his hands 20 times. I think I made him OCD at the age of 5. But, hey, nothing wrong with good hygeine

The Carl's employee is entirely gross. She came out of a stall, touched the lock on the door, opened the door and left. Then, she touched food? Gross. That is just disgusting. I had a cashier sneeze on my groceries once without covering her mouth. I went home and rinsed off everything before I put them away. Dang, aren't people taught this stuff at about the age of three?

Hell, even if I go into the bathroom just to check on it and there's a customer in there I make a point to wash my hands just so they SEE me doing it just so this sort of thing doesn't happen, even if I never touched anything.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
I don't get the whole MYOB thing. If the employee is going back to make my food after they have used the restroom then it IS my business and anyone elses business to ask if they've washed their hands.

Em is absolutely correct. The fact that this employee has touched things in the restroom stall makes their hands contaminated.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-26:
Ya'll are funny. In a sit down restaurant you nearly never see the kitchen so you have no idea how many times that cook dug his britches out of his butt, or didn't wash his hands, etc. Or at the grocery store how many people sneezed on those apples etc.

You worry that a woman didn't wash her hands before she left the bathroom with absolutely no way of knowing whether she did or not in the kitchen, yet worry not a bit about what you CAN'T see. Is your food ANY cleaner because you didn't see it the cook sneeze into his shirt?

I am OCD about washing my hands. However, I would not worry about what someone else does or does not do. If it happens when I can;t see it, then it can't be any worse when I can.

Ya'll better stop eating out.
Posted by Principissa on 2009-10-27:
It doesn't matter if she washed them in the kitchen. There are signs posted all over the restroom that states that ALL employees must wash their hands before returning to work. It's not there for decoration you know. And where I live, it's a state law. The fact of the matter is that this employee was in the restroom, I don't care what she was doing, but she was in a stall, and left that restroom without washing her hands IN FRONT OF A CUSTOMER! It's disgusting and I would have called her out on it as well because it is my business whether anyone agrees or not.

This person was touching food and kitchen surfaces after leaving the bathroom with supposed unclean hands. If you feel comfortable with that fine, but I prefer to eat my food without fecal coliform on it.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-27:
The fact this idiot didn't wash her hands in front of a customer tells me everything about her and that place I want to know. I would never eat there. It's just bad form all the way around.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
Most, if not all sit down eating establishments do not have restroom facilities in the cooking and food preparation areas. If the worker does something in that area that is not hygienic and unsanitary then we have reasonable expectation to trust that the manager in charge is paying attention and will require the employee to sanitize their hands. We also have to trust that the manager sees what other behaviors may be going on in the back that may be questionable. That is a given and a fact that reasonable people will understand. If an employee does not wash their hands in the public restroom it is doubtful the manager is in there to see it. If I do see it, then you can bet that I will say something.

As for the apple that is sneezed on in the grocery store, I am thinking that we have common sense and any fruit or vegetable that is consumed will be washed and/or peeled before it is eaten so that blows that theory of unsanitary food handling out the window.

Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
Pro, you obviously have never watched people walk around a grocery store.

"I am thinking that we have common sense and any fruit or vegetable that is consumed will be washed and/or peeled before it is eaten"

bleh
forget calling the corporate

just call the health department and report that you witnessed an employee use the toilet without washing her hands

they'll be all over them like tribbles on grain
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
Lady, why cant we just stick with the topic of the post and not worry about my shopping habits. Do you always have to bring your opposing posts to a personal level with the person you disagree with? I picked out points in your post and dealt with them directly. I did not refer to you or your habits. Be an adult and stick to the topic of the post and not someone elses shopping habits.

What people do in the grocery store has no impact on whether or not I wash or peel my fruits and vegetables. It's a given that I will do that with any food item that I purchase that is not sealed. Are we really going to split hairs here? My only concern with grocery items is how I clean them and prepare them for consumption. If someone else that makes the purchase decides not to wash the items before eating them, that is their business because they are the one preparing and eating the food. Not a Carls Jr. worker coming from the bathroom with dirty hands. And honestly, do you really thing if someones see's another person sneeze on something in the grocery store that they would deliberately go and pick that item up to purchase? No.

I cannot force an employee to wash their hands, but you can be sure that I would be vocal about expressing my concern to the management.
Posted by Slimjim on 2009-10-29:
Once again stew has the best answer today. If the sign says all employees must wash hands, that is the law and/or company policy. She did not wash her hands upon leaving a stall. She broke the rules and although unlikely, still opened up the possibly of creating a potential health safety hazard. The poster did the right thing reporting it.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
Pro, you are just chomping at the bit aren't you. Let me answer your questions for you. I never stated a thing about your shopping habits.

YOU said "As for the apple that is sneezed on in the grocery store, I am thinking that we have common sense and any fruit or vegetable that is consumed will be washed and/or peeled before it is eaten so that blows that theory of unsanitary food handling out the window. "

In return I said "you obviously have never watched people walk around a grocery store."

Now if you ever have watched, you will see people eating those grapes and apples and handing their kids that banana.

Now, since I am nor making any personal jabs at anyone, let me ask again. How is your food ANY more sanitary when you can't see it than it is when you can? And don't you realize you come into more germs everyday than you think you do?

Let me guess. You washed your hands after opening the restaurant door right? Cause someone might have sneezed on it. Or washed the seat before you sat at the table....
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
Lady, you are wrong, and you are not truthful. Your quote is below.

"Pro, you obviously have never watched people walk around a grocery store." This is a direct comment about what you think I do at a grocery store which would be considered a habit while shopping. Why are you so fascinated about how I shop, or how I open the door at a restaraunt, or about the seat I sit on at a table? This complaint is not about that.

It is obvious you are going to wag your finger at people until you feel you have beat them down. Save that for your condescending attitude you so proudly display here for your customers at Walmart, since you feel that 99% of all customers are at fault for the reason behind their complaint.

This complaint isn't about you or me. It is about the person posting and their issue with the employee at Carls Jr.

I have seen your past posts. Is it that important for you to be right? Is it that important for you to have the last word? You obviously dont get it and you never will, so keep wagging that finger. You are very anti-consumer so why are you on a consumer revolution website? Everyone has the right to be here and post but I question your motivation and your intention for being here.

Go ahead and make your next comment. You can have the last word. I know it will make your evening complete.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-29:
I don't care what you do at the grocery store. Good Lord.

You know, obviously YOU are the one not getting it. My post had nothing to do with your shopping habits. You said people have common sense. I pointed out merely they didn't and that you could see that IF YOU EVER WATCHED PEOPLE AT A GROCERY STORE.

Never mind. You took a simple statement and turned it into your crusade. Have a nice night.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2009-10-30:
Well...I have to say that I AM one of those people who wash my hands after opening the resturant's door...yeah, because when I place my order, I ask the waiter/waitress where the restroom is and I go in there to wash my hands. I do this because not only did I handle the door, but I also touched over the menu that others have touched and maybe sneezed on, I also touched my car door and steering wheel and anything else between my house and the resturant. I am always surprised at how many people walk into a resturant and sit down and just start to eat. And yes, I do the same thing at home. If I'm cooking and I have to answer my phone or open the door when someone comes, I wash my hands. Everytime I walk into the kitchen, I wash my hands...but that's just me.
Posted by Anonymous on 2009-10-30:
DB, do you have a case of OCD.
Posted by DebtorBasher on 2009-10-30:

Posted by angeleyez1006 on 2010-09-01:
Okay, as an Carl's Jr. employee, I remember strictly that you have to wash your hands in the bathroom no matter what you did because you come into contact with tons of bacteria and possible foodborne illnesses. Unless the employee was wearing gloves, it's not acceptable to leave without washing hands. The gloves still aren't an alternative to unwashed hands. Idk. I wouldn't want to anyone to come out of the bathroom with filthy, germy hands and then touch my food let alone someone elses. So I wash my hands with hot water and my arm as well for 20 seconds. Idk, sounds to me like that employee shouldn't have gotten a Food Handler's Permit if she can't follow the rules. :/

Delicious Turkey Burger - New Healthy Menu Item
Posted by on 03/29/2011
I stopped by Carl's Junior earlier to get some breakfast but I noticed they had a new item on the menu Turkey Burgers. Till this point I didn't really care for Turkey Burgers, but they looked pretty good and since Carl's serves regular menu items all day I thought I would give it a try.

The burger was very juicy and cooked to perfection, comes with red onions tomatoes lettuce your usual burger condiments and its char broiled. With 498 calories, and 23 grams of fat its probably the most healthiest menu item they have.

besides Just cause's comment on too much fat, for me the
Sodium (mg) 1010 is just way too much salt.

the human body does need salt, and we are pretty good at judging how much to add ON TOP OF OUR FOOD, but when salt is saturated throughout the entire meal, the result is WAY TOO MUCH SALT. especially when every food manufacturer saturates their product with SALT.

Quote FROM http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salt:
Salt is essential for animal life in small quantities, but is harmful to animals and plants in excess. Too much or too little salt in the diet can lead to muscle cramps, dizziness, or electrolyte disturbance, which can cause neurological problems, or death.
Excess salt consumption is linked with a number of conditions including:
(Kidney stones.)
Stroke and cardiovascular disease.

Hypertension (high blood pressure): A large scale study from 2007 has shown that people with high-normal blood pressure who significantly reduced the amount of salt in their diet decreased their chances of developing cardiovascular disease by 25% over the following 10 to 15 years. Their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease decreased by 20%.

Left ventricular hypertrophy (cardiac enlargement): "Evidence suggests that high salt intake causes left ventricular hypertrophy, a strong risk factor for cardiovascular disease, independently of blood pressure effects." "...there is accumulating evidence that high salt intake predicts left ventricular hypertrophy." Excessive salt (sodium) intake, combined with an inadequate intake of water, can cause hypernatremia. It can exacerbate renal (Kidney) disease.[33]

Edema (BE: oedema): A decrease in salt intake has been suggested to treat edema (fluid retention).

Duodenal ulcers and gastric ulcers.

Gastric cancer (stomach cancer) is associated with high levels of sodium,

Death: Ingestion of large amounts of salt in a short time (about 1 g per kg of body weight) can be fatal.
... However, average adult intake is two and a half times the Reference Nutrient Intake for sodium.
...
Health Canada recommends an Adequate Intake (AI) and an Upper Limit (UL) in terms of sodium,[54] as does The Auckland District Health Board in New Zealand.[55] Health Canada recommends an AI of 1200–1500 mg and an UL of 2200–2300 mg per day for persons aged 9 years or more.

The NHMRC in Australia was not able to define a recommended dietary intake (RDI). It defines an Adequate Intake (AI) for adults of 460–920 mg/day and an Upper Level of intake (UL) of 2300 mg/day.[56]

In the United States, the Food and Drug Administration itself does not make a recommendation,[57] but refers readers to Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010. These suggest that US citizens should consume less than 2,300 milligrams per day. People over 51 years of age, who are black, or who have hypertension, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease (regardless of age) should limit intake to 1,500 milligrams per day.[58][59][60]

Complaint
Posted by on 01/31/1988
PLACENTIA, CALIFORNIA -- I want to complain about the food, quality, service, and prices at Carl's Jr. in general and make a specific complaint about my local restaurant. First, for the price they charge for their food, it's not worth the value...especially when other fast food restaurants have great 99 cent value menus. Second, the quality of the food is horrible. Almost every time I've been there I get rotten tomatoes on my hamburger. The last time I ordered one, my tomatoe had a rot spot in the middle, the bread was stale and hard, and it was cold. My hamburger was so awful I threw it away.
Third, the service is SO slow! I went to the local Carl's located off of Yorba Linda Blvd. in Placentia and it took 10 min. to get a hamburger when no one else was there. Every single time I go there it takes 10-20 min. to be served regardless of the crowd.

To help keep me as a potential future customer, I would like the following:

I'd like to see some more value priced food

Improve the quality of the produce
Make sure you are not serving customers stale, hard, cold, bread
Visit this location and see if someone can improve the service
My past 3 Carl's experiences have made me swear never to go back. What can your company do to change my mind?

At the very least I would like a response from your company regarding this incident. Thank you for your time.

I'll tell you what, their food is so bad these days along with the crappy service, I won't go back and I tell everyone how bad it is. I am a business owner and I wouldn't be in business anymore if I ran it like them.

Why should this customer have to stop going there? I've a better idea: the company should rectify the problems. Otherwise, they should close down.

I'd like to rectify your attitude.

I have been to a CJ down the road from there, and I had to wait a long time to get my order. The employee left me alone there. I can remember standing there, wondering why I was waiting so long even though the place was nearly empty inside and no one was in the drive-thru. I know they have to make the food, but the time they took to fill my order would have been enough to fill five orders. But that's just how all the ones I've been to are. Some of the food is pretty good, but CJ does tend to have higher prices than its competitors. I've never heard anyone say that CJ made their favorite burger. In my opinion, the food quality is not so superior to that of its competitors' products that it justifies higher prices. As for the service, it all just depends on the location and who's working at the time. Overall, they're usually pretty polite at the very least, and sometimes they're very nice and warm.

Wow, Hope this site gets popular as its clearly needed. Yes, Some energy the Carl's Jr. night shift manager Jennifer may have in Fontana Ca. on Merril and Sierra Location. Bought a simple 6 dollar burger thru drive up (Not Combo w/drink, Just Sandwich(No cheese) and medium fry) and she(Manager Jennifer) was personaly taking orders at the window and the car in front of me not even to the window yet(Other car just left) and she is already waving (Thats right, Hanging way out the portal window Waving the order back and forth like right here! come and get it, LOL, How Hoakey can you get LOL, like there going to miss the window and drive by LOL) there order outside the window(Mind you, its super icy cold windy day 12/28/06 8:35 PM 92335) and the car comes up and gets order, pays and goes with a long look at her(Manager) as there leaving(Ok, thats fast, but what if they snatched it, LOL, I thought any manager would know to get paid first before handing out order, LOL, she gave them order then took payment L O L ), and then I am telling myself at first maybe she is new and does not know the protocal/hygene/custumer respect ropes yet(I used to do resturanting service's too) Also hope she dosn't dangle my food out there to long till I get to the window(Freezing out, Brrrrrr), But low and behold she does it to me(Hangin way out the window again), and when I get to the window, I asked her to please hold it inside til I secure the vehicle(put in park) and finish roll window down and pay for the already confused at the order box about what ordered, then let me pay for it and then hand me the order please! then be on my way like normal(Why do we always feel like were being herded around like cattle anymore LOL, Wal-Mart cattle prods must be around everywhere, LOL ), I left and not far from establishment I like most do, reach in the bag for a few frys and find they are so way stone cold that I have never ever in my 54 years experianced that COLD!(Thought A&W was there for awile L O L ), I never even looked at the burger, but figured like any Honest fast food outfit they would promply make another fresh hot without a problem, But this Jennifer manager gave me my money back and told me to leave in a rather nasty huff after I simple requested politly to give me a hot order(I asked her to check or feel the order I just got to confirm and she out of the blue came somewhat unglued and snapping at the other employees, L O L, A real show for me to witness the inept world again). Asking her politly witnessed by other employees to give me her name she did reluctantly(Hiding her name tag at first)She said "THERE, JENNIFER, ALLRIGHT!!" Then Thanked her(Other employees/patrons witnessing this seem to be already aware of hostile reaction), Then as I am leaving quietly and before going out the door she yells to other employees that I called her a b- is why she refused me service and I still without even turning back continued to leave to go to IN & OUT burgers down the street(Was ok). Most of these fast food places can be good or bad different locals I imagine at different times, Remember most hire kids or cheap migrants with skills/education/respect lacking as some of us can look back (LOL), Like the one above posted here said, "cookin at home" is rewarding but a choir for us money talks and bull walks society folks, you get what you pay for generaly. You never know whats happining behind ANY!(ANY PLACE!!) food counter if your not there yourself, don't fool yourself. Working at a Top Notch Resturant long ago(As Teen) I once watched a Head Cook German chef spit soup back into a pot after tasting it, Ya takes yer chances. Perhaps the one above posted here says "who cares" works in this exploiting food chain, L O L.

To tell my story I will post the message I sent to Carl's Jr customer service.

******
My boyfriend and I ordered a shake, chili-cheese fried, and a Hawiian Pineapple Teriyaki burger. While eating the burger I tasted something rotten, and then I looked at my burger and found a green and fuzzy mold growing on the tomato.

I want back to the location with the remaining burger and fries (we had already finished our shake)and showed her the mold. Without apology, she asked me what I wanted to her to do. I said I wanted our money back for the full order. She refused to give our money back for the shake. She said it was "obviously" good since we finished it all. I told her that although the shake tasted good, how am I to know that there was nothing wrong with it. I then told her that the burger "tasted good too" UNTIL I bit into the mold. She answred that with tomatoes there could sometimes be Slip-Ups.

I then asked her if there was someone higher up I could speak with. I also told her that moldy tomatoes can make someone sick. She said I would have to call back, as the manager had just left. So I will do that tomorrow.

Poor service or a mistake on an order are to be expected from time to time, but I see no excuse for rotten ingredients.

How did this happen? Don't employees look at the food when they prepare it? Aren't they in a well lit kitchen?

Why should we not get refunded for the entire meal simply because we finished our shake before finding the Burger's mold??

In my opinion I was asking for very little! But this was too much for Carl's Jr.

I got no apologies whatsoever for having bit into mold. I did vomit by the way. And for this I don't even get a full refund?

Slip-ups can happen with tomatoes, the shift manager admits. This is acceptable to carl's Jr?

She even offered to replace the food! Tell me who would have an appetite, especially one for the same food item, after vomiting because of finding mold? It was repulsive.

I am thoroughly disatified with the outcome, and I will continue to pursue it, as I see no excuse for errors involving rotten ingreients who that could portantially repulse or make someone sick.

Did she say sorry? Did she say that the workers would be more careful in the future? Nope.

I expect more, and will press the issue.

********

I also called them at the 877 number and spoke with a person.

Today I got back in touch with the local restaurant, and was able to speak with the manager. She said that she had received my complaint. She had somehow been notified about the complaint I gave at the 877 number. She said she spoke with the worker who does the prep, she apologized, and said she told the shift leader that I should have been refunded for the full meal. She also said that the tomatoes would be checked. I was told that I could come back to the restaurant and get my money back or get another meal.

All the same I will never eat at Carl's Jr again. I ate there rarely to begin with. I liked their food but the location was not convenient.

Re: Carl’s Jr / Green Burrito #110312 visit 11/6/2008 – Food Poisoning, Unprofessional Service, and Product Mis-representation/Overcharge

To Whom It May Concern,

I am just now well enough and writing to you on my 3rd re-write for the events that happened to me since 11/6/08.

I am sorely disappointed in the service and quality of food received.

1. I was blatantly mis-led and overcharged.
2. The service was unprofessional.
3. The food was unsanitary and resulted in food poisoning.

On Thursday, 06 November 2008 at approximately 4:45 pm I utilized the drive-through to purchase food at the above location ID in Clearfield, Utah for my son and myself for the drive to Salt Lake, Utah. This issue revolves around several issues; the first and later on the least of my worries was the mis-representation (aka fraud) of a product as well as an obvious overcharge while the other turned out to be food poisoning which kept me sick for 2 days in bed to include diarrhea that lasted into the 3rd day. My 9 year old and 12 year old ended up taking care of me as I couldn’t even get out of bed except to run to the bathroom.

Background: I am not a frequent patron of Carl’s Jr - nor many fast food restaurants. Normally I don’t go to fast food at all but had gone to the same Carl’s Jr on 10/29 as I had missed lunch due to a parent teacher conference and purchased their hard beef taco which was very good. Late for an appointment on 11/6/08, I decided to stop by and get dinner on the go for both my 9 yr old and myself. My son does not eat meat so at the very least they (Carl’s/Green Burrito) would have a bean burrito but not having time to scan the menu just asked at the drive-thru order station if they had a veggie-burger. The staff said yes but it was not listed on the menu. They asked if I wanted it made into a combo and I said yes. I also ordered a Green Burrito (Steak) for myself. Told it was to be $11.26 (I believe) they said to pull forward. I paid at the first window, pulled to the first and waited. After a couple of minutes and another vehicle behind me, they asked if I would pull forward. I asked how much longer it would be and the staff said they didn’t know as it was a special order. I pulled forward, parked, and then went inside hoping to save some time as I didn’t want to get behind.

This is where it didn’t hit me until later. I got to the front counter and heard in the back 2+ people laughing/giggling about the “veggie-burger”…”can you believe it”, etc. As a supervisor as well as the Food Service Officer for two years, all I could think of was how unprofessional and ignored it as the front counter person looked surprised and asked if this was my order.

I took the bag and passed to my son, got on the freeway. My son was dismayed and surprised to find his “veggie-burger” was nothing but lettuce, tomato, onions, pickles and bread. Then it hit me what the staff was laughing about. This was a very blatant act and totally wrong! If this was to be nothing more then lettuce/tomatoes, etc then this should have been explained at the get-go. Add the fact that I was charged the full price was mis-leading that I was to receive a “veggie-burger” pattie otherwise I would have just ordered the cheapest thing on the menu. A consumer advocate, I told my son that I would write and complain the next day (11/7/08). On 11/7/08, I was just fighting to stay at work, chair a 8:00 am meeting with heads of Program Management and Contracts, then try to hang on for the rest of the day.

I had the Green Burrito (Steak). I ate it on the road at 5:15pm. At 9:00pm, something was wrong, my stomach was gurgling and I was couldn’t stop throwing up from 11:00pm and I don’t know when I quit. I had to be at report to work at 6am, was feeling ill from my stomach to my bowels. I took ibuprofen and pressed on. My briefing suffered and by the end of the day I couldn’t focus, still nauseous and started to have a terrible headache and diarrhea was setting in. I went straight to bed at 4:30 pm on 11/7/08 (Friday) with my boy’s cooking for themselves, making me tea and cold compresses with mint (yes, I am an organic person most of the time). They called my neighbor to get them to school the next day and I couldn’t do more the get to the bathroom. 11/8 (Saturday) I still have diarrhea but am feeling better and it abates toward the late afternoon.

I don’t need my experience as the Food Services Officer or Quality Assurance Evaluator to know food poisoning when I see it.

Resolution:
1. The management needs to be informed.
2. The staff at the above location needs to be reprimanded and re-trained in food safety practices.
3. An apology.

Carl's Jr. Bad Service
Posted by Green Day on 07/08/2009
ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA -- I went in to the 2521 Commonwealth Carl's Jr. in Alhambra on 7/6/09 at 8:17 P.M. After I ordered my combo meal, the cashier forgot to give me the drink cup as he proceeded to take the order of the next customers that went after me. As I was obviously waiting for his attention, he continued to take out his cellphone and search for a picture he wanted to show the customers I assume he knew outside work. Other customers were waiting in the meantime.
In addition, when the "same person" brought me my order at my table he did not offer me any ketchup at all, which is customary at every Carl's Jr. I've ever been at. I was surprised to see however, that on the next order he delivered that he had a full ketchup bottle already on the tray to be given to the customers he personally knew. Shouldn't the same service be given all the time even if you know the customers?

To Whom It May Concern

I have eaten at Carl's Jr. in the past -- but will never give you anymore business. Your ADS have been in very poor taste but the newest one with students and a teacher (???), dancing like a professional hooker is really disgusting. Our children watch your commercials and even at a very young age realize how immoral it is.

The people writing your commercials are costing you big time.

Let me start this out by thanking [sick of it] for not attributing teenage prostitution and unwed mothers to Carl's Jr. ads and having the good sense to state 'even at a very young age realize how immoral it is'. This is the best Carl's Jr commercial complaint by far.

I too find Carl's Jr commercials distasteful. Not so much the tawdry ones but absolutely got grossed out by the ones with all the eating sounds. In fact after those commercials ran I've never stepped foot into a Carl's Jr. again.

Anyway, [sick of it] great review. I voted your contribution 'Very Helpful'.

I'm with you, Stew, about the ones with eating sounds. There's one running now that shows an upside down 'chin' chewing something. It's repulsive. Don't even remember who it's for. Any time it comes on, I either hit the remote or go into the kitchen for a beer.

I Think There are Illegals Working at This Location
Posted by Antarcticman1 on 07/20/2013
LAKE FOREST, CALIFORNIA -- Every time my wife and I go there, which this location is only 5 min from our house, the food is good but the employees I've seen lately look like illegals and none of them speak English.

I will next time I visit there, call immigration and report them. Even the young girl working the register assumed everyone speaks Spanish and started speaking Spanish to me and I got angry and literally let her have it in front of everyone. This is crap. The manager came out and she looked Latin and was. but spoke perfect English for she's born in America and I said if your employees are illegals, I will call immigration now and report them. She said they're all legal. I said show me their documents, which I as a customer have the right to ask and them other customers did the same thing. All the employees looked at me dirty with fear and I let them know I'm serious.

Carls Jr has the worst employee staff in the world and the late founder wasn't like this. Carl Karcher was a real decent man and loved people and loved serving healthy fast food, which at that time was. Though burgers have a lot of calories and beef is heavy in cholesterol, the burgers were about the best in the industry, as good as In-And-Out Burgers.

I, myself is from immigrant parents who came from eastern Europe/Russia during the Korean War and they always respected America. Today's illegals are filthy, dirty, stinky, immoral, and don't care about rules. They just want free money and when they get caught they always manage to come back.

My wife and I no longer eat at any Carls Jr unless there's no other restaurant in the area we're traveling. We do like their burgers, like I said among the best in the industry. Their sex ads stink, that's another reason we don't eat there anymore. They don't need sex to sell. That's for single men who only want sex 24/7.

You can't tell if someone is illegal just by looking at them. And no the manager doesn't have to show you their documents.

How does someone look "illegal"? This post just seems like a cover for a racist rant.
Posted by azRider on 2013-07-20:
You don't have the right to ask for any of their papers, just like I don't have the right to ask you to prove to me your american, how do I know your parents were not legal and got into this country by some other means. This country is made up of nothing but immigrants, well except for me, I'm Choctaw and live in AZ. so my parents were on the shore waving at your parents on the boat. If you ask me all them wrecked my neighborhood. I can't even find a decent buffalo. but I am off track here.. California, AZ, NM, TX is all close to Latin countries and you'll have people of latin heritage there. Just like in other parts of this country you'll find French, English or Dutch influence. your sort of a racist in your comments I think you need to look in the mirror and figure out who is the real bad guy here. Treating to do something to someone based on your racist beliefs have no place in this society. nearly all business I know have to have an E-Verify process before they can pay someone a paycheck. that includes large company's like Carl's.

personally I'm offended at this post. but in this country you have the right to post it. just as they have a right to work if Carl's will hire them and verify them.
Posted by Susan on 2013-07-20:
I do not believe you have the right to request immigration documents simply because you are a customer and feel that the workers may be in the US illegally. It is against the law for employers to hire workers without proper documentation and it is their responsibility to handle this situation - not yours.
Posted by Anonymous on 2013-07-20:
No, you don't have the right to ask for anyone's documents unless you are an ICE agent and have reasonable suspicion to believe they are illegal. You better have your C and B handy as well because I know if you ask for my documents I'm going to ask for yours.
Posted by Chaparrita on 2013-07-20:
One of my best friends in high school was an illegal immigrant from Mexico. She has blonde hair and blue eyes and light skin. On the other hand, I knew lots of dark skinned people who were born and raised in the US. Please stop judging people for what they look like. It only makes you look bad.
Posted by FoDaddy19 on 2013-07-21:
I think you overstepped your bounds when you asked for their documents. Contrary to what you think, being a customer doesn't give you that kind of discretionary power.

What you can do is complain to the local immigration office and see if they'll look into it.

For what it's worth I do think that if you're in the service industry and you work in country were English is the prevailing language, then it's not an unreasonable expectation that you have command of the English language.

GEORGIA -- I posted a comment concerning the commercial with Kate Upton today on FB. I am pleased to know that I am not the only one that finds it very offensive. I have a 8 yr old son that is exposed to this "soft porn" while watching TV. Carl's Jr. has lost all of my family's business, along with a lot of our friends. It is ridiculous to have this commercial on prime time television for a fast food hamburger. Speaks volumes about the company!

I don't think this commercial should be shown before 10:00 p.m. because it is inappropriate for young viewers. Before 10:00 p.m. it should only air during adult oriented programming, which children should not be watching. Parents shouldn't have to be armed with the remote control when their kids are watching shows appropriate for children.

Were you okay with the Paris Hilton ad campaign they had a few years back? You'd think that alot of the same people who are complaining this more recent ad would've sworn off Carl Jr's/ Hardees years ago when they ran a very similar ad. Just saying...

Why does Carls Jr. have to be so "out there" with their blatantly sex riddled commercials?!

Look, I'm not a prude, but why do they have to stoop to showing a sexed up woman eating a hamburger? I guess plain ol' smart advertising isn't their thing. No funny/clever advertising here.

Let's put it this way, I do like their product, but because of this stuff being showed to kids, I refuse to go anymore!

Burgers with NO BREAD!!! What The %$^*&^
Posted by Lchpa9 on 07/18/2011
"Carl's Jr. does not give a crap about customer satisfaction!"

I visited the store in Fullerton CA on Euclid north of Commonwealth. and ordered a "six dollar burger, well done, to go" like I've done many times before, from the same person. I get home and the first sign of a problem is the "low carb" sticker on the box, that I've never seen before? I open the box to discover "NO BUN TOP OR BOTTOM." So I drive back (about 3 or 4 miles each way) and the manager is not there, but they say they can help me. They try to tell me I ordered it with no bread! GIVE ME A BREAK, NO BREAD? who orders a hamburger with no bread. Anyway, I ask for my original order to be replaced and a refund. THEY REFUSED and said "we can't do that." I took my money and left!

In the past when I called and complained about their product or service they said something like WERE SORRY AND WILL TRY TO NOT LET IT HAPPEN AGAIN. Never offered to replace the product or send me a voucher or coupon like other fast food establishments who give a S _ _ T about its customers satisfaction.

Any mention about dissatisfaction to El Pollo Loco, (or Pizza Hut) they either comp my whole meal or send me a $10 certificate. They want me to come back! As do many other fast food places I've had a problem with. IT SEEMS CARLS JUST DOES NOT GIVE A FLYING F _ _ _ ABOUT ITS CUSTOMERS! And could care less if I return or not.

I'm inclined to make a picket sign that reads "IF YOU WANT A BUN WITH YOUR BURGER BE SURE TO ASK" and stand at the drive thru entrance (which I still might do) and see if they change their minds, or call the cops?

If I get no satisfaction, I will most likely NEVER PATRONIZE THEM AGAIN! Right now "CARL'S BLOWS BIG TIME!"

PS another sign of their arrogance was how difficult it was to give them my feedback online, I never found a link, telling me they truly do not care. If I do picket, I'll probably let you know how that worked out if I can.

I've never had a fast food place refund me my money and give me my order. One or the other makes sense on what to do. I've had fast food places give me a free side of fries or something for having to come back due to giving me the wrong thing.

Check your receipt, if it says low carb, or something of that nature, then they did think you ordered it that way.

I went to the Carl's Jr. website, and right at the top of the page is a link that says "Contact Us" where you can give them feedback. It's very simple to find.

The closest I've come to getting a refund and my food for free was one time when Chipotle messed up my order (yet again) and they gave me some gift cards for free burritos along with my food.

Except when I was on the Atkins Diet a few years ago, I'd be upset at not getting a bun with my burger, too. I'd venture to guess you're quite adept at getting free food/gift certificates, right? Please *do* let us know how your picketing idea works out.

Low carb burgers never come with buns. That's where all the carbs are. You received the wrong burger, which of course you are upset about, but they are human and they made an error. You received your cash refund, and while you feel they should have compensated your meal, they are not obligated to.

Good luck on your protesting and sign holding.

Many people order the low-carb (read no bread) burger for any number of reasons. Some are on a low-carb diet, some are gluten sensitive, some just don't care for the taste of FF buns. As already stated, they mixed up orders, apparently. At the risk of being deleted for diminishing the importance of the review, you, IMHO, are making a mountain out of a molehill. The most you are entitled to is either a refund OR another sandwich. Expecting both is unreasonable. As a former LEO, I can tell you that in most jurisdictions, taking the route you describe can get you arrested for one of several charges, including blocking business or public sidewalk or disorderly conduct. It will be much better for your blood pressure to realize that people make mistakes, that is why they put erasers on pencils. I got an Angus with Swiss and Mushrooms once after clearly ordering the Bacon Cheeseburger, and I didn't write a scathing review. I did however write a good review for another Mickey Dee's location who gave me a Bacon Cheeseburger Angus when they heard what had happened. I do wish you luck.
