Coffee Flavor is Off
Posted by on
Rating: 1/51
AUSTIN, ARKANSAS -- I recently bought 3 large cans of Folger's French Roast Coffee from Kroger on sale. All taste totally different from previous containers with a flat taste. Has Folger's changed the ingredients and messed up a good thing like so many other companies are doing? We will probably switch brands because of it......

I have experienced the same thing with Folger's Gourmet Supreme - but not consistently. Coffee prices fluctuate and the American dollar does I think there is considerable diddling with these coffee mixes. The last batch I bought was fine but the previous two were weak and flavorless. I have gone back to perked coffee. It has more flavor and I don't know....pizzazz? It's just better and you can use cheaper coffee and just perk it longer. Drip coffee just tastes like Kool-Aid.

I don't use the Folger's brand (it was always too strong/bitter tasting to me in the past) but the coffee I've purchased the past year or so has an entirely different flavor to me. It's just not as good. What on earth is going on? Is it being processed differently?
Chaparrita on 05/01/2013:
I like Chock Full O Nuts. It's cheaper than most brands and has a great mild flavor.

I have the same problem. I have bought 5 different cans of Folgers classic roast from different stores, and returned them all for the same bitterness after taste. Something must be going terribly wrong since I have tried 8o'clock and Hills bros with similar aftertastes, they don't taste like real coffee anymore.

Is it me?

I don't know if it is my taste buds, but my Mom says the same thing about Folgers Coffee. Have they changed the taste of their coffee? IT seems to be bitter. I have chabged the amount I use and still it is bitter. Are they using a different bean or what? Has anyone else noticed the difference in taste?

I usually make a cup of the instant each morning and I can't say I've seen a difference myself.

I drink Folgers and I have noticed a slight change in the taste. It is a little more bitter than it used to be. If you find it bitter, than add a sweetener, such as vanilla or hazlenut. That should mask the bitterness
mapape on 11/17/2009:
Well, I don't like the fact I have to sweeten it to mask the bitterness. I will just buy Maxellhouse next time.
PepperElf on 11/17/2009:
another option if you want to explore is to switch to a mild blend coffee

the mild blends are not so bitter because they aren't roasted as long

but don't let the word "mild" mislead you.
I used to think "bold flavor" meant strong coffee with more caffeine. And I was wrong.

The roasting process eventually starts to destroy the caffeine
so if you go with a lighter roast, the flavor will be less bitter, and you'll get more caffeine kick.

Another option is to switch to brewed coffee and use a paper filter. The paper will help absorb some of the bean oils (which I believe contain the bitter flavors).

(Don't use a coffee press... I mean well you can, but the press won't take any of those oils out).

happy coffee drinking! =)

I alredy brew my coffee and use a ppaer filter. I am going to try a mild blend next time.

After buying a can of Folgers coffee I noticed that it was not sealed to hold the flavor in,to be sure that it was not just my coffee I went back to store and guess what none of the cans were sealed. That's why my coffee taste's bad, this is my last can of Folgers. Will try Maxwell house.

Veronica on 01/23/2013:
Absolutely , the flavor has changed , I have already tried the mild blend , breakfast blend , classic , they are all different and taste bitter . A lot of people are complaining about it .
jenn on 02/15/2013:
Mine tastes watered down and disgusting!
frank on 12/29/2013:
sent email to Folgers to tell them about bitter taste and they said they would send coupons. sure hope these coupons make the coffee better when I add them to the pot
edward phillips on 03/05/2014:
Taste watered down. Lost the flavor it used to have.
Carrie on 06/27/2014:
We have noticed the bitter taste of Folgers, our favorite coffee, for a while. Now the can I just bought tastes like watered down coffee. It is awful. So disappointed in Folgers. I remember when the Captain was coming!

Explosion of Coffee !
Posted by on
HEWITT, TEXAS -- I bought a 27.8oz container of Folgers and when I pulled back the foil seal, the coffee exploded up and out of the container. Coffee was on my counter, clothes and cabinets.

Be careful !

Good lord! I use their Breakfast Blend in these containers..I wonder if I should aim it at the neighbors with the barking dog behind me. :D
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
Sounds like a malfunction of the coffee container's check valve. The containers can actually explode when the check valve doesn't operate properly. I would not use the coffee instead I would take it back to the store for an exchange or refund.

Good review!
tnchuck100 on 05/26/2009:
What pressure was the relief valve set for? How much pressure was indicated on the pressure gauge? Did this container have the warning label: "This product contains chemicals known to the state of California to cause cancer and birth defects"? Were you wearing the required safety glasses at the time? Did you provide the neighbors with adequate evacuation notice? Have you contacted Sokolove Law, LLC?
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
LMAO, chuck!
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
Exploding coffee... I would never even think of this being a possibility but I guess anything that is vaccuumed packed could.
tnchuck100 on 05/26/2009:
Just a point of technicality. A "vacuum packed" container cannot explode. It will IMPLODE.
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
Chuck, Here's a write-up about the check valve and other technology in a folger's plastic container. Coffee produces a lot of gas. If the check valve in the plastic coffee container malfunctions the container can EXPLODE. I don't make this stuff up people. I take these reviews as opportunity to LEARN something. Then I forget it and relearn it next time. Anyway it's a good read Chuck you might enjoy it.
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
LOL well maybe it imploded at such a force that the coffee spilled out over the sides?!?
Anonymous on 05/26/2009:
I get Folgers too and have spilled coffee grounds after I pulled back the foil. I had to use the force within me to get the foil off and that's why it spilled all over.
Amateras on 05/26/2009:
BokiBean : LOL !
Amateras on 05/26/2009:
littleyaya : Oh yes! I have had that same situation, but I have never heard of coffee shooting out of the container before. Scared me silly!
madconsumer on 05/26/2009:
it is called vacuum sealed for a reason. at least it was fresh.
Slimjim on 05/26/2009:
Now that will wake you up.
CrazyRedHead on 05/27/2009:
Actually, when I drink Folgers coffee it causes an explosion of a different kind.
BokiBean on 05/27/2009:
Hahaha@RedHead! Lordy..
tlcnict on 01/09/2013:
I don't mean to be gross but the only explosion of this Folger's Gourmet Supreme Dark Coffee was on the toilet.... :( I totally feel sorry for the folks at the sewage treatment plant because it had me in tears and seemed to linger...ya know.. the smell... Sorry, I don't usually say stuffs like that, but is anyone else having this issue? I love the taste of this coffee and don't want to change, but my insides do not agree with my idea of liking it... Thanks... tlcnict
