Long Distance Charges
By -

P.O. BOX 173875, COLORADO -- I live in Georgia and my husband is incarcerated in Georgia!! Well he called tonight and GTL charged me long distance fees and we both have 229 area code! So I call GTL and unbelievably, they try to say he is in California! Wow I did not know jail allowed you to go on vacation. They insisted until they looked into it. So, I ask to have the long distance fee removed and lo and behold, they came up with another reason to leave the charge on and that reason is because it was a cell phone.

Last night the supervisor stated that there would be no long distance fee. Of course, the representative tonight said they would not do that. Well I think GTL is a big rip off. Isn't it bad enough, the stress we feel having a spouse locked up and down to one income? GTL has to take advantage of us in our hardest times. They should be ashamed of themselves.

The Real Story on Global Tel Link
By -

People should check out p. C1 of the 14 October Wall St. Journal. Behind the high charges and poor and rude customer service I've read about on other postings is a paragraph that GTL is borrowing money to pay out a very large dividend of $173 million to Veritas Capital, a private equity outfit, and other investors, including Goldman Sachs.

Last year Veritas paid $70 million to buy control of GTL; this year it will get back $80 million of that $173 million dividend--that's over a 14% return on its investment, and it still controls the firm to be able to get future payments. Does this look like legalized looting, first of GTL, and then of us through GTL's state-sanctioned monopoly powers?

This Should Be Illegal

I cannot add any more negative stuff on this company that hasn't already been said. They are deplorable. The money they charge for a phone call is asinine. I have on 3 occasions accepted a collect call, spoke for less than 5 min. and for EACH call prior to accepting the call, had to charge $25.00 on my credit card to talk to that person. EACH time the call came through, Global claimed I had to add more money. I'm on a fixed income and to charge that kind of money for a PHONE CALL is again, asinine!!

This company should not be allowed to continue to take advantage of people the way they do. I can call international and not be charged $25.00 for 5 min. I'm waiting for the big wigs in this co. to go to jail then have their family pay for their collect calls. Hay pal, have ya ever heard of KARMA!! Good luck... (don't call collect)

Rip Off
By -

I agree this company is a rip-off. My fiance was transferred to the city jail. I had to change the pre paid company to Global Tel Link. Since he was only going to be there a couple of days it cost me $ll to put $25 on the account. 3 calls later there was no money in the account. I call customer service & she stated that it cost $2.05 to connect. 30 for every minute after. When I complained she said all pre paid charged that. I had to correct that statement because I was dealing with another company for 2 years that charged $1.86 for a full 15min call.

This is robbery. The department states how they want the inmates to be in contact with the family & they make it impossible with these contracts to make it happen. HIGHWAY & FAMILY ROBBERY. And to think they are locking people up for that.

The BIGGEST Rip Offs Ever!
By -

This company GTL is the biggest rip in the whole world, I have never in my life been so blatantly ripped off. Firstly, I was cut off from speaking to the inmate and charged for it. Secondly, they said the inmate has gone past his allotted limit or there's a block on my side (I called my phone company, THERE WASN'T ANY KIND OF BLOCK). I call bull on that because if I'm paying the bill, WHO CARES. Thirdly, I now have to put $25-$50 every time he calls and we can only speak for about 4-5 min because they charge fees on top of the collect call. $25 goes towards ONLY three short phone calls.

Fourthly, GLOBAL TEL has to be the biggest SCAM out there. It's typical OUR system THE INJUSTICE of that communication company GTL raping the AMERICANS who already pay through their butts to keep these horrible companies alive. Fifthly, their customer service SUCKS!! They transferred me to a message recording and that cut me off as well. PUT THEM OUT OF BUSINESS ALREADY!!!

Global Tel should be ashamed of themselves and I hope when all those people who work there leave their job at night, I hope they feel lower than the lowest scum on earth. KARMA IS A **! Something bad will happen to Global Tel, they'll go out of business or maybe the owner will get hit by a car. **.

ANOTHER SATISFIED CUSTOMER. I will be contacting the Better Board of Business as well as the Federal Communications Commission!!! EVERYONE SHOULD DO THE SAME!! Oh ya, you already have a "F" rating. I GIVE YOU AN **.

Global Tel Link

I have never been so insulted in my life. Globel Tel Link has the most rude customer service. I don't want to give them another penny of my money. They think they can be rude because they are the only company providing the service, but I work for customer service for DTV and if I ever spoke to a cus like they have spoken to me I would be walked out of there! A cus serv representative hung up on me, when I asked to get a better understanding of how they ran their business, and was told there was no supervisors there so I couldn't speak to one!

Every time I call in someone tells me something different, they are unprofessional and a horrible company! I spoke to a supervisor and she had the worst attitude ever! She wouldn't answer any of my questions straight I don't even think she knew what she was talking about! When you call in you have to wait for them to call you back and that takes hours! I refuse to spend another dime on this company, I rather write letters. This company has the worst customer service, and the sad part is there is nothing anyone can do about it...

How in the World Do We as Consumers Tolerate This???
By -

MOBILE,, ALABAMA -- Our family has recently had to deal with the thievery and horrible customer service of Global Tel Link, They are an impossible company and we live in a country where no consumer has to be exposed to such abuse. I urge everyone affected and violated by this company to contact the Federal Trade Commission immediately!!! The abuse, ridiculous rates and unfair treatment will continue if all we do is complain in a blog!!!

No matter what the reason we find ourselves having to even be involved with this terrible company, we must demand a fair and constitutional treatment from any company regardless if they are the primary company for the need we have or not. This is a disgrace and they are no different than Bernie Madoff, they only do it in our faces hoping we feel so helpless we simply take it. We are allowing this company to be as civilly abusive as they continue to be. We owe it to ourselves to demand better treatment.

Collect Calls From Jail
By -

I successfully received calls from my fiance in jail for almost a week then suddenly he was unable to get through and I got a message letting me know that "An inmate in the Los Angeles county correctional facility is trying to place a call to this number. In order to receive this call and future calls you must first set up a prepay account". So I did. And I got the message again!!!

The next call went through and I spoke to him. However, the third call was that same dreadful message. It's like Global Tel Crap picks and chooses when it's going to be kind enough to let you receive the calls you've already paid for. And what's with having to wait two hours to get a phone call back from a rep? Global Tel Link will rot in hell for what it's done to it's customers.

Global Tel Link--Simply Unreal
By -

As with most of the recent reviews regarding Global Tel Link, I too have experienced the newly-placed/hidden policy of there being a limit to phone calls received from inmates. I also was not aware of this so-called "new" policy until my calls were blocked. I think this practice of not informing the customer prior to such a drastic policy change is totally unfair - how can you be expected to conform to a policy that you are unaware of, and it's even more difficult in my case considering I receive calls from two different facilities.

At the very minimum I would think Global Tel Link would take that into consideration. As this has just happened, I intend to contact the corporate office later today to seek some type of satisfaction, since I was told by the reps and team leader that they would not be able to unblock my calls. Needless to say, I am outraged! Global Tel Link should really watch its step--with as many complaints as it has received, it is more than "ripe" for a class-action suit, at the very minimum.

Rates

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Okay, this is new to me. I live in Ohio and my husband is in the prison facility. Now when he is at a facility near Columbus the call is around 5.00. Okay because of the distance I can understand this. However, the shocker came when he was moved up here about twenty minutes away from me and I am being told that the call is now 10.00. I call to speak to the supervisor and of course you get no name, just a please leave a message that doesn't get returned.

There is something terribly wrong with this system and because they are inmates doesn't give this company the right to treat us like we're leeches. Hate to disappoint but you need to review the rates that are being charged because I seriously doubt that a call to a 330 area code from 216 is 10.00. Is anyone else being billed this outrageous fee?
