I ordered a DVD from hotmovies.com and a month later they billed me $3.76 for the movie and a $9.95 membership fee. I called to complain and she cancelled my membership. I then had to ask for the refund of my money and she told me I would receive it in one to two months. I never signed a contract or asked to receive a membership. I then asked for her location and she was talking to me from the Philippines. I'm tired of talking to someone overseas about a problem. This company is a scam that gets people to purchase movies and then locks them into a membership secretly.
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA -- HotMovieSale.com, is a complete scam. First they offer you $5.00 your first order, but in the find print it tells you that you have to join the club, which starts automatically deducting from the credit card/debit card used after 7 days.
Second it appears they never actually sent my DVD. I ordered a DVD and paid extra for Two Day Shipping. 8 days later nothing has been delivered. They claim it is held up in by the USPS, but the USPS doesn't seem to even have the package.
When I called to talk to Customer Service about it, the "manager" who I waited 30 minutes to speak with told me there was nothing she could do, refused to listen to what I had to say and then hung up on me. Do not use this company, they are nothing but a scam.
I too bought a great priced DVD movie and I had thought that if I didn't accept any promotions that was the end of it until I got my card statement to find a 19.95 charge for a membership I did not authorize. I called the support number to BestBrandValues and was directed to a paragraph at the bottom of the confirmation of my order to find the membership was automatically added to the bill if I didn't reply in three days.
I didn't authorize any application for membership, I didn't accept or decline any sales pitch. I need to add the conformation e-mail came from an "BestBrandValues.com" I didnt know if they are the same business. I hope I can save you from this mistake that I made.
Update, as of 7/27/2009 I have lodged a complaint with the local BBB and have activated the dispute system on my credit card and they say that the problem will be investigated. Final Update, I spoke to a sharp man at my bank / fraud investigator and he knew just what to say to Hotmoviesales.com customer support and my charges were reversed. So call your bank!!
My credit card bank person strong armed the company to reverse the charge.
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA -- I ordered a movie online with this company and was charged 5.52 For the movie. Today I am doing some online banking and find a charge for a membership of 19.95. When I called the company they said they would cancel the membership and gave me a cancellation number. But they would not be able to refund the charge since it had been three days since I ordered the movie. I told them that I declined anything after the purchase and that I did not authorize the charge and will have my bank reverse it and thus I am warning all of you beware this company's practices.
HOUSTON, TEXAS -- I was surfing the net looking for a copy of the newest release of "Cool Hand Luke" and I found a new copy for $8.99 plus $2.99 shipping and bought it. Within a week, I received a completely damaged DVD and had to spend over an hour to get the RMA to return it by a CSR who was very accusing, like I'm going to rip him off when all I wanted was another undamaged copy of the same movie. He made sure to tell me that if he did not get the damaged copy, that I would be charged twice. OMG, then a week ago, I find this charge for $29.99 for my quarterly "membership" fee. PEOPLE... I did not just fall off the turnip wagon. I AM a smart shopper and do not remember that fee.
So I called and was reminded that I agreed to their small print terms of service. The $8.99 was the hook to get me a membership to buy new movies that I can buy at Target, Wal-Mart, or Walgreen's for $14.99 for no less than $16.99 plus shipping. Most were $18.99. O.K., I have ranted and still am mad. From what I read they are ripping off many people, so my next letter will be going to the Postmaster General and the Federal Trade Commission.
Charged my account for an order I placed, then didn't even have it in stock, and still charged my debit card. They say that they don't charge the card until the movie (item) has been shipped. They don't even have the movie in stock. Why are they charging my account for something they don't have and they even say that they won't charge until item ships. If anyone can put these people in jail for theft, then do it.
I can't believe I let these people rip me off for about a year before I noticed the measly 9.99 they charged every month for what? It infuriates me that any company can get away with things like this - I hope they go belly-up and that everyone who works for them gets ripped-off for everything they've ripped-off from unsuspecting consumers!!!
Just because you find this company with a Google search that may have a low price, I STRONGLY SUGGEST THAT YOU DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM THEM!!! First, you will discover that they will automatically enlist you in a buyers' club service that costs about $20 a month; of course you get an option to cancel at some later date... but just wait and see how defective their customer service is! I am having to use my credit card company's fraud division to seek justice... Their site claims they are a Florida based company, but that is apparently just for show.
They are based in the Philippines, so good luck finding anyone to help you - unless you want to fly there to complain. If you try to cancel an order within 12 hours of placing it, you are SOL; I was told that - even though they had not processed the order, there was no way to cancel it. My next stop is Florida's Attorney General to see if they can be charged with mail fraud or wire fraud... SAVE YOURSELF - DO NOT WASTE ANY TIME WITH THEM... I suggest you pay a few dollars more for a DVD and get it from a US company that will be able to provide satisfactory customer service. Caveat Emptor!
BOCA RATON, FLORIDA -- I have tried twice to cancel an item from this company. The first request for cancellation was several weeks ago. They told me they would "try" to cancel the order. There is no way to cancel and order on-line. I received an email today saying that the product is still on back-order. They did not honor my request for cancellation when given sufficient time to do so. I sent a second request to cancel this order. The company is unresponsive to cancellations even after given a significant period of back-order time. I would not recommend this company to anyone.
I just read several complaints about Hotmoviesale.com and yes I almost got caught with the membership fee. To their credit there was a $5 credit which I guess went toward shipping and handling. The movie I purchased did work and didn't have any skipping. However I noticed a week later an additional charge of 9.99 in addition to the movie purchase. I called them and they did agree to take it off.
However I was just lucky I caught it that soon. It was not mentioned upon purchase, not mentioned in any emails they sent to me, and didn't receive any emails about the benefits or purpose (even if I had wanted to join this membership). It just appeared. I will not order from this company again. I just ended up being very lucky I got a good deal on a movie, it worked, and I found the membership fee in time.
