My "Non Appointment" Appointment Disaster/Horror
Posted by Deb1000001 on 10/11/2013
BARSTOW, CALIFORNIA -- Made 1p.m. appt. Arrived 12:40. They took the next local around me, asking if they wanted a front end alignment while they were in the alignment bay! (I found later, there is only one alignment bay) To which the man answered "no." At 3:00 p.m. my brother arrived to give me & my mother a ride to her house. He let me take his car and he stayed. They were just pulling my vehicle, finally, into the bay when I left. I found later, the woman was the owner's wife, so she knew exactly what she was doing; and had been her business' receptionist at least 25 years. Complained to Midas, (right after the complaint, my car quit, totally, electrical problem, but from two air sensors being plugged in backward into the idle air control? Something they weren't even working on. May have been in the way for the alignment?) I asked Midas not to give the complaint to the business as it was on the owner. I just asked them to investigate. I asked that maybe they put someone like the lead mechanic in charge, someone who would run it fairly. They GAVE THE COMPLAINT TO THE BUSINESS TO HANDLE, WAS THE email REPLY TO ME. Midas official called me after I complained again, then said they were calling the woman, and then calling me back. So I guess after they talked to the woman, they took her word for whatever she said. I WILL NEVER FORGET THAT MY 90 YR OLD MOTHER WITH WALKER AND VERY WEAK, SAT FOR 2 HRS 20 MIN. WHILE for some reason someone chose "they just didn't like me" and would make me wait. We both made the best of the time we had to wait, until over two hours passed, I went around to the bay to ask why my vehicle was not even yet in the garage) I complained, finally, around to the back area, as I did not want to upset my mom. Everyone arrived in perfect timing, including me, for the alignment bay. Two people were leaving and she could have put the man, who was after me, in either other bays.

GOT HOME WITH MY MOM, WHO DOESN'T EVEN FINISH A WHOLE "ENSURE" WHO GULPED IT DOWN WITH HER LIFE SUSTAINING MEDICATION, AND WOLFED DOWN FOOD I PREPARED QUICKLY FOR HER WHILE SHE WENT TO THE RESTROOM, AS SHE COULDN'T EASILY USE THE RESTROOM AT MIDAS AND DIDN'T TRY. So later, this woman who purposely left a 90 yr old sitting for over 2 hrs, tried to call me numerous times, after my complaint; and every time I hung up without saying a word. I had already told Midas I did not wish to speak to her, or see her ever, when they called. I had to complain to them online again, to ask them to have her stop calling me. I told them I didn't want anything from them, as they obviously didn't want to handle a problem involving the owner, themselves. I never told them about the $400 repair (thank God from my trusted mechanic at Purrfect Auto) that could have cost $1000-$2000 elsewhere on my type veh). So Midas, cost me $400 to replace my idle air control, plus their repair cost, plus a 3 hr wait for the actual repair work with an appointment time (the time they finally released my vehicle), for which the actual alignment was probably no more than 15 minutes to do. And the unexplainable idle air control sensors being switched into wrong positions, ruining the idle air control. It must have been God that got me home. The next time I drove my vehicle after stopping at home, it quit running just past the security gate exit of my community. Luckily I have towing with my insurance.

THIS WAS A FEW MONTHS AGO, BUT WHEN I SEE THE SWEET LITTLE MIDAS COMMERCIAL ON TV for the last few days, it angers me. I wouldn't use MIDAS if they were the last repair place on earth. Especially, you will find IF YOU HAVE A COMPLAINT AND SEND IT TO THEM. THEY DON'T REALLY LISTEN.

You know midas is a franchise right? each one is owner operated. the corporate office has no control over them outside of making sure they buy products from the main office and follow franchise rules. so there is little than can do about any rude owners. to be fair, it sounds like the owners tried to contact you to set it right. maybe say they were sorry and offered you something for it. instead you just ignored them. I think you should have given them a chance to and see what they said. even if it did not satisfy you, you should have taken the call.

Tough one to sort out and follow. But, I do agree that Midas is a bad choice for auto repair. They have a history of overcharging and charging for work never done. I would lump Midas in with Pep-Boys and the other bottom feeders in the auto repair biz.

There Too Often, Waited Too Long, Spent Too much...
Posted by Jjmaster94 on 08/20/2013
WEST SAINT PAUL, MINNESOTA -- I was there in December for a broken exhaust pipe, it was repaired for $170, there were many other rusted places in the pipes there I was not told about. Fast forward to July, another pipe breaks so I make an appointment. I had a 10AM appointment and the car wasn't looked at until noon. I spent 5.5 hours total waiting around and spent $300 only to have a muffler fall off (literally) a week and a half later. This was due to the manager not telling me that pipe holding the mufflers on in the rear was rusted badly on both sides. That repair was another 3.5 hours waiting around and $150. I could have done a much better job inspecting the car myself. I complained through their website, and all the general manager would do is defend his people, and he said he would send a certificate for future exhaust work. They don't want to ''oversell'' is what general manager Steve says. Oversell by (withholding information) not telling the customer that they need new pipes, so that they'll return multiple times to spend multiple hours and dollars? Terrible.

Installed Timing Belt Wrong and Lied About Part
Posted by Freyja69 on 07/06/2013
VICTORIA, TEXAS -- Took my 2002 Dodge Neon for preventive Maintenance. Timing belt, water pump, replacement, Brake master cylinder. They informed me two days later my timing belt was not needed and I agreed for them to use their timing belt kit. A few days later they said the car was ready. Pushy and arrogant.

Two days later my car would not start. I called Midas to find problem and they towed vehicle back to their shop. Two days later they called me back with news the timing belt slipped from the water pump they installed I gave them to install. They said parts were free but labor was a charge. Then I went to shop they changed their mind and said 1/2 on labor and no free parts. If the water pump caused the problem why did they install a faulty water pump? The cost will be $1496.00 to fix engine head.

About 4 days later I got vehicle back with oil in radiator, loose bolts on rocker arm assembly, loose air conditioner lines. 4 months later and 3 visits to other mechanics to try to fix car. The engine light came on from lack of compression, the cam wore out from not being adjusted from the value job.

Do not go to Midas. They are cheaters!!!!!

Update on my ruined engine. I took midas to small claims court. Lost case because the corporate franchise owner lives out of town. Could not summon him because small claims court deals with cases in the county.
Unless I become a lawsuit freak. The courts need prove that the owner was working on the car. In other words I have to prove the owner played a active role in vandalizing my car. He can also hide behind the fact he was running a business. Kind of like a stalking or harassment claim.

Illegal Price Gouging
Posted by Pltdbeezer on 06/18/2013
FAIRVIEW HEIGHTS, ILLINOIS -- I went to Midas to get a new muffler and tailpipe for my truck. When they gave me the estimate they said it needed additional work that would cost over $800. I wanted a second opinion on the other work so I told them I just wanted the Muffler. The estimate on the muffler, tailpipe, and labor was $195.56.
The muffler and tailpipe were in stock and the work was done immediately. When the work was done the price of the muffler, tailpipe, and labor had each gone up over 17%.

When I complained at the store they said they charged me extra because I only got the muffler and did not get the other work done. They never told me they were going to raise the price if I did not get the other work done. When I complained to Midas, the Store Manager called me back and left a message to call him. I called him back. I told him this practice was illegal according to the Illinois Automotive Repair Act. He promised to send me a check for the 17% overcharge. He never sent the check.

I suggest filing a complaint with your state's Office of the Attorney General. Violations of state statutes would be acted upon very harshly.

When I used Midas. Once my car was taken apart and in their shop they made up every reason legally possible to charge extra. Those guys are bad cheaters. My engine was ruined because of midas

Damaged My Car, and Refuses to Pay for It
Posted by Alexwhitbeck310 on 04/26/2013
KEARNEY, NEBRASKA -- On 4/3/13 I stopped in the Midas located at 102 W 25th St, Kearney, NE 68847 to have my tires rotated and balanced while driving cross country from Chicago, IL to Los Angeles, CA. The store was getting ready to close. The manager went out to my car to get the miles off the car, and when removing the key from my ignition, he locked it up. He later went out to move the car into the service bay, when we learned he wasn't able to start the car. We called a locksmith, as there was no parts in town to replace it.

The locksmith came out and took a look at it, and informed me IN FRONT OF THE MANAGER that he had snatched the key out, WITH FORCE while the car wasn't fully in the OFF position, resulting in bending the pins in the ignition. I was stuck with a $65.00 bill for the locksmith and told I would need to replace the ignition, as the Midas employee damaged it. The employee who damaged the ignition admitted fault as well, and said he was very sorry. He told me to come back the next day and they would do my rotation on my tires for FREE.

On 4/4/13 I returned as I had stayed the night at a local hotel. I was charged for the service as well $60.80. On 4/24/13 I called Lexus as requested to do by Dan [snip]to get the price of the repair, and was told he would pay me to have the car fixed, as well as the $60.80 I paid of the service and the $35.00 I paid for the hotel. When he found out the bill for the car repair was $737.80 he refused to pay it, and told me the age and miles on the car was the reason my ignition broke, and proceeded to tell me I'm in Los Angeles now and he is in Nebraska, and there wasn't anything I could do about it. I have threatened to contact my attorney and sue Midas and he refuses to pay me for the damages.

I have a written statement from the locksmith even stating the Midas employee was the one that damamged my car, and if Midas still refuses to make payment to me for this damage, I do have full right and intent to sue Midas to the fullest of the law. I will seek damages for car, hotel, repair bill at Midas, attorney fees, court cost and interest if allowed by the court. This $900.00 problem will turn into a $5000 or more problem.

Now that you have threatened to sue, you likely won't hear anything unless you actually do it. Sounds like a small claims court matter Good luck.

I took midas to small claims court after They ruined my engine by installing the timing belt with tenson kit to tight. Two days later belt broke water pump on the timing belt. I brought it back and they left my air conditioner, rocker arm bolts loose, oil in radiator ect... You can only guess the money I lost.
The only person I could take to small claims court was the shop manager. Because owner lived out of town he could not be served. The judge ruled in favor of midas. Wrong person was summoned to court. The owner is a part of a corporation. Also He would have to have helped mechanic work on car. In other words you would have to prove he harassed me by how he ran his business. My advice if you read, hear a bad review about a business involving mechanics

Over Charged Problem Not Fixed
Posted by Lizardlaughlin on 04/22/2013
LODI, CALIFORNIA -- I brought my car into Midas in Lodi. It was not starting. Took them two days to fix my car all along they're telling me I need a tune up for $150. I say no just get it started. I'm two weeks from having my baby only fix whats broken. I send bf to get car he pays $429. He leaves on the way home car starts to misfire and has no power (this is a new problem). He goes back tells Ken what's going on. Ken tells him we need a tune up.

Bf calls me I call Ken. I ask him what's up our car starts but now doesn't run. He tells me I need a tune up. I tell him no and ask him what he did. He tells me he can't talk to me, won't give me corp. number and hangs up on me. Ken then tells my bf I don't want to get sued maybe they put the plug wires on backwards so he switches them car runs ok bf. leaves. That night bf looks under the hood sees an ark at plug wires. He then takes it to another shop pay $200 to find out the wires have been cut and they didn't put any new part on our car. So we were charged for nothing and later we also found the part was only $80.

File a police report. The fact that they cut wires critical to the function of the vehicle which might have potentially led to a fire constitutes willful endangerment.

Midas Always Does Great for Me
Posted by Midas manager on 04/19/2013
SCOTTSDALE -- The guys at Midas have always done great for me on anything I've ever taken them. I was reading these reviews and just about threw up...........what a bunch of whiners trying to blame their lack of maintenance on everybody but themselves. I've got news for everyone, the time to compare pricing is before the work is done.

Personally, I like a big company to stand behind my work and the ability to go to Midas anywhere in the country if I have a problem. The guy that said he got an estimate on his brakes and then more stuff was wrong isn't stupid, he's uninformed. You can't estimate brakes until you know exactly what's wrong.

It makes me sick to see people trashing Midas because THEIR car broke. There's a lot of bitter people in the world these days.

The problem with Midas is that some shops do work that is not required. They tell customers that they need repairs when no repairs are needed. They like to do this once they have secured your car. Your advice to shop for a price is useless if your car is there for an oil change and they tell you it is unsafe to drive home. This of course not being the case. Not all but many Midas shops do this. When you tell them you do not want the extra service a "manager" is used to high pressure you. If you still refuse expect a long wait to get your car back. As far as the initial price you get from Midas they are notorious for "lowballing" the customer. An example is this, you get an estimate of say $79.95 for front brakes the work is started and then you are informed you need new rotors, calipers, hardware kits, etc. when in fact you do not. That is why I stay away from Midas and I am neither stupid nor misinformed.

Midas does mufflers, though I wouldn't take my vehicle there
Posted by Howard on 2013-04-20:
I have had nothing but great experiences with Midas. My Prius had been making a very loud, straining noise upon accelerating after every oil change...when I went to Midas, it stopped. I conclude they were the only ones who used quality oil and actually changed the filter. I have always found them honest and reasonable on other repairs too.
Posted by freyja69 on 2013-07-08:
Midas is just a greedy corporation that repairs cars the same way a fast food restaurant fixes hamburgers. They will fix the easiest cars first then let a car that takes small town american now how for last. I do not need a mechanic shop that only knows how to change oil, change a radiator hose ect.. I recommend going a a high school auto repair class /shop instead. No insult to high school students.
Posted by Curtis Nichols on 2013-12-07:
Update on Midas. I tried taking them to small claims court. What happened was that the judge ruled in favor of Midas. The owner is a Corporate LLC. He would have had to help the mechanic work on the car. In short I would have to prove the owner of the Midas corporation harassed me by how he ran his business.
My advise is your making a mistake about trusting Midas. There are a lot of businesses that know how to not piss people off. Rumors account for something no matter what.

What a Rip Off
Posted by Lamarrie5 on 04/03/2013
Had oil change on 3/5/13 and light came on 3/29/13. Checked with stick no oil this can't be. Been going to MIDAS for year, never no problem. The one I was going to closed down so wanted to stay with MIDAS. I went to one close to my job. What a mistake. Had to add 3 qt. I really thought they were reliable. So wrong.

You need to check for leaks (oil plug, filter) to ensure you don't keep losing fluids.
