CALIFORNIA -- Usually, if an item rings up differently when you're at the check-out, don't ask us to do a price check. That is the price. Problem is, more often than not, another customer threw an item back at any location. It'd be a good idea to check the shelf labels or tag to verify that is the true price and description of the item you're purchasing.

Yes, it's our job to make sure all items are in their correct location, however, we do not have people recovery throughout the whole day. If an associate quotes you a price for an item and it does ring up differently at the register, you would usually get it at the quoted price. Pay more attention to what you're buying, please. It'll save us, you, and the customers waiting behind you a lot of time and trouble.

Office Furniture

METAIRIE, LOUISIANA -- I bought furniture from Office Max and within three months it was falling apart. I paid $800 for a computer desk, two file cabinet and a table. From the start, the doors on the file cabinets would not close properly. I could not get one cabinet level, so the drawer kept opening. The bottoms in the drawers could hold little weight, so the files on them pushed out the bottom.

The plastic wood design on the cabinet top was peeling off if the particle board. The table and the computer desk seem to be a O.K., but I got rid of the furniture, so I can not say that those pieces held up any better after four months of use. Office Max and Office Depot are good for supplies, but I would not buy furniture at these places ever again.

No Refund. Box Is Opened.

ORLANDO, FLORIDA -- Office Max told me that most cameras have a 14-day return policy, but Sony Corp. will not allow returns to the store; you must return it to Sony once you break the seal of the box. I called Sony and several other office supply stores and they never heard of this policy. So I'm returning the camera for a full refund without opening the box. I'll buy it somewhere else. I want to try the camera within the 14-day return period. And there are stores - such as Staples - that don't charge a restocking fee. Buy your electronics at Staples!

A Simple Request

FAYETTEVILLE -- We bought a refurbished Brother fax machine because we needed one for our church. A 40 dollar rebate was offered with it. I misplaced the form that I was to send in and was not able to send it within 14 days. Thinking 40 dollars was lost, I was pretty upset. However, I proceeded to call the rebate help center (number printed on rebate receipt.) After shuffling through the automated service, I finally got to a real person. I explained to him the situation, and he quickly and kindly found a solution to my problem. He said my rebate will still be honored! I am very happy with the service I received.

This all comes to show how a few people with positive attitudes can make a huge change in the business world. Sure, sometimes situations are hard to resolve, but when all people are genuinely interested in a solution, and keep a positive attitude, everything can be solved. So before you leave a complaint on this website, call the people up and check if the situation can be fixed.

Customer Service, 2 Thumbs Down

FLAGSTAFF, ARIZONA -- I live in Flagstaff Arizona, and I was looking to update a few outdated items. I had found Office Max and decided to go shopping for an updated computer system and networking items. First, I wasn't very pleased with the service. Surprisingly, I noticed a few employees standing around doing nothing and it took them more the 20 minutes to acknowledge me. When I finally got to speak to someone (I had to go get them), they didn't have the faintest clue how to answer my basic questions.

I am a beginner when it comes to computers and I wanted to make the right purchase. So, I asked to speak to someone who knew about computers and networking, and they got someone new. The new person wasn't any more helpful than the last! I could not believe that they didn't staff anyone knowledgeable about technology because I even offered to come back at a later date to speak to someone and make my purchase.

I finally decided to drive 10 miles down the road to Staples. They had knowledgeable employees that answered my simplest of questions and I felt confident about my purchase. Not to my surprise, everything Office Max recommended was in fact the opposite of what I needed! They did get my 1300 dollar purchase. I will definitely drive the extra miles and give all my business to Staples from now on. I do not recommend Office Max AT ALL. Amazing how a company remains in business with such poor service and knowledge.

Rebate Runaround
By -

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE -- I purchased a Panasonic Fax Machine from Office Max in 11/04. After submitting my $40 rebate form within the time window to the address specified, I never received a rebate. I began contacting Office Max via internet in late 2/05 and when they finally answered I provided all the information they asked for. I also visited the store to return the new and unused fax but they would not take it back even though I had a receipt.

Between February and April I have been going back and forth with them, despite re-submitting copies of the UPC, rebate form and original receipt. They most recently said they couldn't find my information and couldn't help me. I answered with a complaint to one of the several email addresses they use and the address that said they couldn't help responded by asking for my info yet again!!! As soon as I get my money back, and I will, I'll never enter Office Max again.

Purchase Tickets

LAKE JACKSON, TEXAS -- I have gone to my local Office Max to buy new hardware for my computer so I would not have to drive 50+ miles to find what I need. There is always a lot of tickets you have to take to the cashier to buy the item but they never have any of the items in stock.

They should only have a number of tickets to match what they have in stock but they just put a bunch out there wanting you to order the item. I always end up driving the 50+ miles because I need the item then. I have complained to their head office but it has done no good. If this is the way they want to do business they should just close the company down.

You are truly the BEST Office Supply and print Store
By -

To all those crazy people who go to Stores to get free after rebate items and then complain about it... DON'T SHOP. You are the people who hold up the line and are making the purchase to make yourself money on E-bay. Get a real job and stop trying to take advantage of companies. I LOVE OfficeMax. It is the best Store of the three Office Supply Chains. They are the cleanest and friendliest Stores. They have people who want to help you. They always are willing to go above and beyond. Office Depot, you should close instead of opening more Stores. Staples, you have to get people in the Store who want to service a Customer.

CHRISTIANSBURG -- I went to OfficeMax to buy a wireless printer. I decided to price match it with Circuit City to save me a trip to the next town over. I printed off the ad for the printer at Circuit City and I even printed off the promise to price match from the OfficeMax website just in case there was a hassle. No hassle about price matching, except when I handed them my ad they rudely tossed it in the trash and said "yeah, well we have to call them, you'll have to wait. Can I help the next person in line please?"

I waited for 10 minutes for a manager to come to the front. Then I waited an additional half an hour for a manager to come to the front. Finally, I waited another hour while he was on the phone. No apology, no nothing. All of this while I brought the ad in. They treated me suspiciously as if I was trying to rip them off. I understand the calling policy, but an apology would have been wonderful.

Rebates
By -

SOUTH DAKOTA -- I'm reading many complaints about Office Max rebates. I wanted to point out that in most cases the mail-in type rebates are offered through the manufacturer (Sony, HP, etc) and not the retailer (Office Max, Best Buy, etc). In most cases any rebate offered by the retailer would be an instant, in-store rebate taken at the register (though there are exceptions).

I realize that it may not be the case at all stores, but the Office Max here in town has excellent customer service and I can cite several examples of store managers here getting on the phone in order to help redeem declined rebates. I would suggest that it would be better in the long run if people, instead of or at least before simply walking away, would take names and store information and contact the national office. If the national office isn't aware of these complaints - particularly with specific examples, including names - they can't fix the problem.
