Dennys Restaurants - Company Policy

Review by bassretcop on 2013-01-04
ALL -- I just read the article where police detectives were asked to leave a Kentucky Dennys restaurant because they were armed. I was a police officer for 33 years and have always enjoyed and supported Dennys. This liberal insulting policy is unbelievable in a democracy where police are our first line of defense from all threats. SHAME ON YOU. I WILL NEVER VISIT DENNYS AGAIN, SO YOU CAN REST EASY BECAUSE I AM ARMED AND DISGUSTED!

The article I read indicates plainclothes detectives with guns visible upset some patrons, and they complained. This is understandable.

Then a manager told them they couldn't have the guns on their person, and a general manager told them afterwards that the manager was MISTAKEN. The detectives left in a huff, and refused to pay for their meals. Then the chief banned his people from dining there.

From this account, the Denny's people overall acted more appropriately than the others. The manager made a mistake, and the GM corrected him. Sounds like it was blown out of proportion, so to speak.

If Denny's was robbed point of gun would they then expect the responding police to arrive unarmed?

I found an article in policemag.com and Denny's had issued a statement. "Denny's later issued a statement saying the restaurant permits officers to carry firearms while eating and, "we regret any misunderstanding.""

A manager got a little over zealous.

Of course, this is a specific Denny's restaurant and not the chain's policy.

If anyone overreacted it was the police officers.
Had anyone else walked out on the bill they would have been arrested.
If having their guns out upset patrons they should have apologized and put the guns out of sight of the customers. Not throw a temper tantrum and leave without paying. The manager was looking out for his other customers who were uncomfortable. Since we don't know the entire story I feel that Denny's did what they had to do to make ALL their customers comfortable.

They were asked to leave before they had finished their meal. Why should they have to pay? They were asked to leave and they did. They did no wrong. The Denny's manager was wrong and I hope he feels like an idiot! I guess when Denny's gets robbed, he won't called the cops because they don't allow guns in Dennys!

Robbers wouldn't hang around Denny's waiting for the police to show up so using the argument about the cops not responding with guns in hand or holster to the call is ridiculous.

Don't believe everything you read, like 3rd party complaints.

Their badges were visible and their walkie talkies were on the table
