GMAC Insurance Complaint - GMAC Errors - Auto and RV Insurance

Auto and RV Insurance - Complaint
Review by Leidback on 2008-03-20
ITALY, TEXAS -- I obtained a GMAC auto/rv policy in April of 2007. I was told that my 1st payment would be deducted on June 15th. On May 15th, they deducted the 1st payment. In October, we notified them that we would be taking our trailer out for vacation, and asked that they change it from "in storage" status. One week later, I called and asked them to change it back to "in storage" as we were back home. They said, "it already is in storage". They had made no change. On March 10th, I told them I was not renewing my policy. DO NOT DEDUCT ANY PAYMENT FROM MY ACCOUNT. They deducted it on March 17th? I still don't have it back. This is for a policy I am not renewing? They were supposed to overnight a refund of an unauthorized deduction on Wednesday. They failed to do so. Three strikes, they're out! Do not use GMAC, they are totally incompetant.

Another example of why you should NEVER give your bank account information to any company. Auto-pay is generally a bad idea. When you allow this these companies will take what they want when they want. You lose control.

I use direct pay with GMAC and have for several years and never have had a problem. We have access online to our checking accout, so I regularly check it to make sure nothing fishy going on. Same with my credit card companies. We online access it is hard for companies to get away with it, because they know you can check up on them and get a quick response.

forcomplaintsonly, you have just not had a problem....yet! Consider the average guy living paycheck-to-paycheck. An incorrect automatic debit can easily lead to multiple overdraft fees. Even if you can get the debit corrected you are still out the fees.

For myself and possibly you, our finances are not tight enough to get caught by this. But the typical working man must consider it. There are many complaints on this site where auto-pay has caused much grief.

Personally, I will not relinquish control of my bank account to 3rd parties.

Yes, I have lived that way for a long time, living paycheck to paycheck, but I also had a budget so that I wouldn't run into this. I am not jumping you, I know a lot of people live paycheck to paycheck, sometimes out of necessity and others because they don't know how to manage their money. I really feel sorry for the ones that have to do it that way out of necessity, but for the ones who do it, because they have no self-control, I don't feel sorry for them, unless they have kids, even then I don't feel sorry for the parents, but for the kids.

I did not feel you were jumping on me at all. This is a good discussion for people to see points of view.

It's not really a self-control issue as much as it is an unethical, greedy big corporation taking money from your bank account when they were not entitled to it. This practice is very common with satellite TV providers and cell phone companies. Charging for unreturned equipment, early termination fees, etc. All in error.

The self-control issue was pointing more to the people who live paycheck to paycheck, because they go out and buy what they want when they want, instead of deciding, "well, my finances are not good right now, so I will wait", so many "rob peter to pay paul, so to say."

The problem I had with the unauthorized autopay that they removed was that they had assured me it would not happen when I told them not to renew. And I had made an appointment with an allergist for some expensive tests today. And of course, they wanted payment up front. So I ended up making an 86 mile round trip to get money from savings to deposit in my checking (2 different entities) to cover my medical costs because GMAC did not do what they said they were going to do.

GMAC has been awful. I have had nothing BUT billing issues with them for the past year or so. Seems like every single month. My insurance due date is the 12th of the month. If I pay the insurance on the Friday before the due date, fine, no problem. If I pay it on the 12th sometimes they try to charge a $10.00 late fee, so that has to be corrected. Then if you pay it "too soon", as in before the due date, say around the 20th of the previous month, they apply the payment to the wrong month and will tell you there is still a premium due on the 12th. Even if you just paid it. But they won't send you a notice in the mail. Oh no. You have to call in all the time and babysit the status of your policy to find out if they are trying to sneak in a fee. And they will! Even if the Customer Service Specialist says "no fee" they will add one. And if you make any changes to your policy, they will change your deductible amount and not bother to tell you. So you have to stay on top of that, as well. Now, I filed a claim and this is the first time I have filed a claim with them. I filed it online yesterday. Today they have no record of the claim in their system. They won't have a record of it until Monday. There is no information available about their drive in claim service department and they don't have a list. The email confirmation of the online claim contains an incorrect phone number to what appears to be a phone sex hotline, so I had to locate a different phone number to call them to find out this information. I am trying to quotes for different insurance because as of right now I have zero confidence in this insurance company to do anything right. And no I will never EVER give them my checking account information. They asked me for it again today when I called and was unable to find out any information about my claim from yesterday. FAT CHANCE OF THAT lol! Oh and they also tried to sell me other insurance. Yeah right. AS IF I am about to but another policy from them. As of right now I am trying to get other quotes from other carriers before my renewal date next month.
