Bank Will Not Investigate Wrongful Charges
By -

GARDEN CITY, KANSAS -- I had a $30 charge appear on my checking account which I did not authorize. The only detail on my bank statement was a phone number, no company name. So, I called the phone number, it turned out to be a call center for various companies, and they told me that in order to reverse the charge I would have to know which company charged me. I told them I had no way of knowing who charged me, my bank statement didn't give that info. They put me on hold, then disconnected me.

Obviously, a scam company and bogus charge. So, I filed a dispute form with Commerce Bank in regards to the charge. The result was that Commerce Bank would not reverse the charge. Their reason was "I could not identify the company that charged me". What in the world!! This bank is so incompetent that they can't even determine who charged my account fraudulently??? And then they blame me for that??? It's the bank's responsibility to tell me who charged my account!!! And, they couldn't even do that. This is the worst bank that I have ever seen.

Scam Banking
By -

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI -- Today 12/15/10 I have been running circles for 3 1/2 hours with Commerce Bank. I first got this account because my employer Carondelet Health had this banking firm come to show us what they had to offer etc. I switched so I could get free money orders as this it was to be a free benefit, and how I have to my pay rent.

Secondly the so-called overdraft protection. I check my account online religiously and then come to find out I have 6 overdrafts totaling almost $200.00 and nobody at Commerce is willing to help me. When I made a deposit yesterday, I was told I had a credit balance of $191.00 by the drive-through teller and found out the same night when I was making another deposit to my account is overdrawn by almost $200.00. I feel like they are putting the screw to me. Here it is Christmas and they could have run through the 6 charges, and just gave me 1 overdraft but they choose to lose a customer to try to make a profit off me as I already work 4 jobs trying to meet my needs.

I tried to speak to Branch Manager at 135th and Stateline - she was doing an audit in vault so I was sent to 135th and Lamar - Branch Manager out. Went back to 135th & Stateline - Manager was still in vault audit. Went to 89th & Stateline, spoke with manager-in-training to hear 'sorry about my luck', and then I went back to 135th and Stateline to hear her say she wouldn't help me, then I called online banking as last resort to hear "sorry". This is how they care for their customers. Good way to wreck someones Christmas.

Suddenly Charged Maintenance Fees On Account
By -

DESLOGE, MISSOURI -- I have been banking through commerce for nearly 5 years and have never overdraft or had any mistakes on my part. I recently got charged $7 for a "monthly maintenance fee". I called and talk to my local bank and was informed that everyone was sent a letter telling them (which I did not receive). She said you have to have $500 direct deposited into your account every month.

Next month I received 4 direct deposits of about 200 each and the fee showed up again, so I called again. This time she said, "unless you get one direct deposit of $500 or more in a month then you will now be charged this fee "because of the cost to send out bank statements every month". What is that like, 50 cents? Then give me my other 6.50 back you crooks.

I contacted them via email and never received a response. What is this saying? If you are not rich, then they don't want your business. THIS COMPANY IS UN-AMERICAN!!! How can they change my bank account terms without my permission? I signed up for a "free checking".

Online System Misleading - 'Courtesy' Fees (Overdraft) Unfair Business Practice
By -

OLATHE, KANSAS -- The Commerce Bank system tracks debit and Visa transactions as they occur. Visa transactions are listed as 'holds' on the account. If your balance is below the 'hold' amount pending, IT WILL STILL LET YOU SPEND MONEY even if you have overdraft protection turned off.

In my case, I purchased 2 sodas that put me a few dollars in the hole - this based on a 'hold' that is not readily shown on the online banking without clicking the tiny mysterious links on the POSITIVE account balance on that day. The hold is totally ignored and you have access to the full amount without the hold withheld. Their system KNOWS about the hold but lets you spend the money anyway.

Each time a transaction occurs in this case, you will be charged $33!!!! This happened 8 times to me in a few days... I had spent less than $40 on various things and had to pay close to $300 because of the 'courtesy' fees that Commerce Bank charges. Their system is misleading, purposefully inaccurate and the toll-free agents and local bank managers are blissfully unaware or ignore this reality and are of no assistance. DO NOT USE COMMERCE BANK - YOU WILL QUICKLY LOSE MONEY if you have smaller balances in your accounts (like most people nowadays). DO NOT TRUST!!!

Incoming International Wire Transfer
By -

NEW YORK CITY, NEW YORK -- Commerce Bank (the most convenient bank) was a really great bank for almost a decade, but recently their service quality has significantly dropped. Their customer service representatives were incompetent and misinformed me that incoming foreign currency international wire transfers would be exchanged to US dollars according to the market spot rate. In reality, that have credited my account with 2% less amount.

When I contacted Customer Service, they forwarded me to their international wire transfer department. They did not know anything about exchange rates. They have sent me their exchange department which informed me that spot rate applies only to amounts greater than $500,000 and that for lesser amounts, they would apply exchange rate that is 2% lower than the spot rate. It means that they charge you 2% for currency exchange.

Lesson: Do not trust their branch employees or customer service representatives on complicated transactions like wire transfer or exchange rates. They don't have a clue how it work and you may loose a lot of money. I lost $1,800 because I trusted them that I would get a spot rate for incoming wire transfers. Of course if you transfer quarter million EUR it is not the case, but I don't think that there are many customers that would have such money. I could never imagine that I would have to write a negative review for Commerce Bank, but the reality is that they have lost their quality of service. And I will have to move my account again which is not good for them or for me.

Be Careful With Commerce Bank
By -

NEW YORK -- I recently open an checking account at Commerce Bank. First, I made cash deposit for open this account. Second, I deposit another check. After a couple week, I deposit the third check. I was inform the third check needs few week to be available. Few days later, I am in need small amount of cash and go to the Commerce Bank. I find out they freeze the entire balance (including the balance from first and second deposit) until my third check is clear.

I was shock. So they show me my balance is negative. I deposit 3 times and they said my balance is negative so I can't get the cash. Unbelievable. Anybody know who their CEO (Chief Executive Officer)? Just curious he/she create this system or just employee error? Thanks and sorry for my poor English.

Get Taken to the Cleaners!
By -

PENNSYLVANIA -- I have had an account with Commerce for the last ten years. I recently switched jobs and my checking account got nearly drained. On 3 different occasions over a 2-week period, Commerce withheld deposits, both cash and direct deposit, and let checks hit. They paid the checks but charged me a NSF fee of 35.00 each which, inevitably caused a future check to bounce.

I went to their branch today to complain and demand my money back and they had all the usual answers, "the date you see the check posted was actually 3 days after we got it", and "we changed our policy on that". In the end, they refused to reimburse me. I told them I would take my business elsewhere, and they couldn't have cared less.

Lies and Deceit
By -

ANY COMMERCE BANK, NEW JERSEY -- This bank has the most dishonest practices. You have the option of looking at your day-to-day transactions and they even have an option, so-called “pending transactions” that are not yet posted but will be the next day - but only transactions made with your card, in no way do they show the actual checks that are being posted in to your account. I always look in to my account online and on Monday or Tuesday, there were no checks.

Today, June 20 almost fell out of my seat when I saw that a check was returned and I even have a savings account that would have served as equity. Now, the bank would argue that they couldn't do such thing unless they have a written authorization, but they have no problem withdrawing the overdraft fees.

Commerce Bank Credit Report
By -

COLUMBIA, MISSOURI, MISSOURI -- After a mis-sent and mis-cashed check, Commerce Bank of Missouri refuses to help with trashing our credit reports. They show a 30-days past due because another bank cashed a check made out to Commerce. Unless you want your credit trashed and numerous undesirable hassle calls you have no control over, do not ever do business with Commerce, never ever.
