Totally Unbelievable Price Gouging. Should Be Criminal!

123 E THIRD AVE, RANSON, WEST VIRGINIA -- 231 gallons propane delivered on 01/18/10. Got the bill today. Before taxes...$4.72/gallon. Yes, you read that right shoppers...almost $5/gallon BEFORE TAXES. How does that compare regionally? The US Department of Energy (yeah, they should know huh) reports residential propane prices for 01/18/10 regionally at $3.28/gallon.

I live in eastern WV bordered closely by MD, VA, and PA. More specifically, USDOE reports this same week: MD - $3.11/gallon, VA - $3.08/gallon, and PA - $3.37/gallon. No report for WV. So why $1.50+ gallon HIGHER??? All I can figure is because I lease their tank and they think they have me over a barrel. Bzzzzt! Wrong.

I just told them to come suck it out and I will use the heat pump rest of winter, then when the remaining gas I already paid for is gone, they can come dig the tank up. So, unless you like that warm fuzzy feeling of being raped... DO NOT BECOME AN AMERIGAS CUSTOMER!!!

Resolution Update 01/25/2010:

After making it clear I would not pay $4.72/gallon, they offered me $2.91/gallon locked in until next June. Apparantly in summer they always send out offers to lock in rates, but with all the junk mail I get, I didn't see it.

Anyway, I am pleased with the offered rate. Nonetheless, I am still somewhat turned off by the fact they would try to bill for $4.72 at all since that is so far above the market rate. But, in the end I am OK with the new rate and it is only fair I update this complaint.

Blackmail on Delivering Gas
By -

CINTI, OHIO -- I ordered gas on the 4th and paid for it. Now on the 8th I still don't have it. I am about to run out and they know this but when I talked to them they told me it wouldn't be delivered until the 11th. They couldn't get it here any sooner but if I give them 200 dollars more for a special delivery then I can get it now. I just feel like I am being blackmailed. Why can't that truck deliver what's already been paid for. I have 4 small children and my 85 year old father living in the house worried about running out of gas.

Do Not Use AmeriGas For Propane Service!
By -

PLAIN CITY, OHIO -- After 2 years I called AmeriGas to tell them to come pick up their empty tank as we were going with another supplier. Was told that we would be charged $100 early termination fee because we had a year left on a 3-year contract. Informed customer service representative we never signed any contract. She told me that the receipt that was left on my garage door when we got our initial fill up contained information on the back regarding our 3-year contract.

Basically, if we were accepting propane from them, we were agreeing to this contract. I don't have that original receipt but I have others and nowhere does it mention any contract or early termination fee. Told them to go pound salt as hell will freeze over before I pay them. Before I cancelled them they qouted me a price of $2.93 per gallon. I found a competitor that locked me in at $1.49 with no lock-in fee and no hazmat fee. People think all supplies MUST charge hazmat fees and this is not true.

Amerigas Ripped Me Off, They Filled My Tank and When I Got the Bill!!!
By -

WAYLAND, MICHIGAN -- Last spring when they filled my tank I paid $2.35 so I didn't think much of it when I asked them to come out and fill it up before winter and they did. When I got the bill they charged me $4.07/gal for the gas. My friend just paid $2.29/gal from another company. I pay them in advanced and had a 850 credit and after they put in 216 gals I owed them another 145.00.

If there are enough complaints to the AG he will do something and in the meantime I will see if WOODTV will do a report and I'll see if Senator Levin will look into this GOUGING by this company. I will file a compliant with the MI Attorney General. I will also write a letter to the editor which I know will be posted. I hope they will enjoy the publicity.

Tank Pickup Charge
By -

SUFFOLK, VIRGINIA -- They started out with a great deal. $1.09 per gallon the first year. My old provider told me I would be dissatisfied and he would await my return. The second year my payments went up a little and like always I paid on time and settled in September with the balance because that's how the budget plan works. The third year after trying to lock in on a price all summer, I was quoted $2.11 per gallon.

Once I did the math I figured that I would not use the amount of gas that I would be paying for in the long run on the budget plan so I decided to become a pay as I go customer. They denied my lock price of 2.11 and whenever I paid, the delivered price was always more than the price at the time that I paid. They said that it wasn't paid for until I received it. So decided to get another provider. I found one closer to me. I called for them to pick up the tank. They are charging me $99.46 to pick up their tank. It was empty and undamaged with all the regulators boxed and ready to go.

Why should I have to pay them to come get their tank? Seems to me they are charging for not being a customer. They said that it is clearly stated on the back of the bill that they can charge for this. I can read and it does not say so on the bill, front or back.

AmeriGas - Very Poor Customer Service!

WHITE HALL, MARYLAND -- I called AmeriGas to schedule a propane fill when our tank was about 22% full. They told me they would deliver within 7 business days. After 8 business days they still had not delivered and our tank was down to 5% due to extreme temperatures. I called and asked if we were on the schedule that day (a Tuesday) and they said they would be out by Friday.

Friday morning I called and asked if we were on the schedule for that day. They kept me on hold for a while and then said that they would be out by the end of the day. They never showed up and we were down to 1%. Called the corporate office but they were useless! On Saturday we saw an AmeriGas truck show up at our neighbor's house who is on Auto fill so we thought for sure we were next, but the truck drove away without servicing us! We found another company, "Thrifty", that saved the day by filling first thing Monday morning. Will never use AmeriGas again!!!

AmeriGas Pricing Questionable

KINGSTON, RHODE ISLAND -- Used AmeriGas "Pre-Pay" program as a way to get the best price yet when I decided to keep them honest this year, I called several other propane companies for Pre-Pay pricing. Cancelled with AmeriGas and saved nearly 20% with no delivery charges and no hazmat charges. So much for having faith that when told they are giving you their best price, it appears AmeriGas' best price is considerably more than other propane distributors.

But my complaints don't end there. How difficult is it to properly schedule deliveries? For AmeriGas it is very difficult. The week prior to leaving for the two week winter trip I called the local AmeriGas office to notify them that I was low, needed a delivery, and would be away. No delivery came before we left and returned to a freeze up which caused thousands of dollars of damage. Over the next several years we developed a relationship with the delivery driver and she would ensure timely delivery.

When you cancel with AmeriGas plan on waiting until they feel like picking up your tanks. We have been waiting three months. They owe us not only for the fuel left in the tank but for the balance on our overpayment in the Pre-Pay account which they claim they will not refund until the account is closed which is AmeriGas speak for "When we get around to picking up your tanks." My next move, besides making these disparaging remarks on as many websites as I can locate, will be to call the AG's office of consumer affairs.

Worst Customer Service Ever

SAINT JOHNS, MICHIGAN -- Late summer we upgraded our propane tank to a larger size because they were filling the tank every 2 weeks through the winter. I was told to wait until the tank was down to around 5% remaining and then call them for the tank swap. In the meantime they would put a customer will call hold on the existing tank to make sure they didn't accidentally fill it. The tank got low. I called them, they swapped out the tank, no problems.

Flash forward to the middle of winter and while looking through the checkbook I noticed we had not paid AmeriGas in several months. I check the tank and it's at 5%, almost empty. I call AmeriGas and find out they never took us off the will call list when the tank was swapped out. It was a Friday when I called and spoke to **. She was very indifferent and just said they couldn't come out until Tuesday unless I wanted to pay a $200 emergency refill fee. It's now Sunday and the gauge is down around zero so I start to wonder if there is any danger if the tank runs dry. Several Internet sites say it is dangerous for the tank to run dry. Thanks for that information **.

So I just called their emergency hotline number to see what I should do. Sat on hold for 1 hour and 15 minutes before someone answered to tell me there is no danger. No way I'm paying $200 because they forgot to do their paperwork when the tank was switched. The drivers who have been out to deliver the propane and one time fix a leak were always very professional… good people. But outside of the drivers AmeriGas service is Terrible.

LEWISTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- This is one of the worst companies I have dealt with. We moved from our house in August and was told to expect to receive a refund for the propane left in our tank. Two months later and they are clueless as to how to refund us this amount. The last gal I spoke to said there was "a system error" and I asked her to define what she meant by "system error", of course, she had no clue. Each customer service person has a different story and honestly I think they are just making up excuses. I will never use them again.

MAINE -- I requested AmeriGas close my account in Oct 2012, removed tank, and refund the cost of propane I paid for that was in the tank. Received a bill in Dec 2012 with a late charge and tank was not removed. Called and asked why and they said they would take care of it. Received another bill in Jan 2013 and Feb 2013 with more late charges. Each time called to complain and they said they would take care of it. Complaints fall on deaf ear and they are now promising to have the district manager call me... yeah right. Bottom line - DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THESE PEOPLE!!!
