Direct General Takes Money But Won't Pay Claims
By -

NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE -- My car was hit from behind in late Sept 09 by a woman driving a car belonging to one of her relatives. The car that hit mine was insured by Direct General Insurance, and the driver was issued a citation. I filed a claim with Direct, but the customer service representative waffled, and made several excuses about the woman driving not being on the account, and the policy being too 'new'. WTH? They insure the C-A-R… not the person, and unless they have an Excluded Driver Endorsement on an individual, they should cover the driver, no matter who it is.

I eventually had to file a claim through my own company, Progressive, and although they repaired my car immediately, I had to pay $500 deductible. I'm not even going into details on lost usage and wages due to the accident. Progressive subsequently attempted to recoup their money through the process of subrogation from Direct General, but they were also unsuccessful and have since closed the case.

I have contacted attorneys who state that the disputed amount would not be worth filing a lawsuit. I wonder if this is Direct's unspoken standard operating procedure. What if the claim is too small for attorneys to take Direct General to court, and they just ignore it, knowing that it will eventually just go away?

Well I'm not going away, I am hiring a lawyer and I will pay to make Direct General stand up to their responsibility. I will contact my state's Attorney General and the BBB, and share this story with anybody who ever brings up the subject of auto insurance companies. As a driving instructor, that's a lot of people. I will cost them more money in the long run than if they had simply done the right thing and fixed my car… even if that money they spend goes to pay their litigation attorneys.

I hope this unscrupulous company gets their clock cleaned in court one day, and I hope the dirty executives and managers who implement and support these policies get what they deserve. Here's the funny part, Direct General's motto is "We'll do right by you". What a joke.

I Wish I Had Read the Online Reviews About This Company

FLORIDA -- Hello fellow consumers. I have been with Direct General Auto Insurance Co. for 3 years. I was recently in a small accident. I have been in contact via voicemail with the insurance adjuster for 19 days, only spoke to him 1 time in 19 days. They finally sent a check for repairs on my car. However it is 1000 dollars short, my deductible is only five hundred.

I am now fighting with them to have another adjuster to come to do a reassessment. They promised the body shop they would have someone out by Tuesday or Wednesday. Now they cannot get anyone here till Friday late afternoon go figure. This is going to delay the process of fixing my car by yet another week. So if they come out on Friday the body shop should be able to start on my car by Monday. It is a five-day job. I have rental insurance they only cover for 14 days. I am now borrowing a car.

This company is TERRIBLE, I would not suggest them to my worst enemy. It looks like I am going to be without a car for at least two weeks after my car rental which I pay extra for. It's already been done for five days. It's looking like at least 7 more days before my car is fixed. I wish I would have read online reviews about this company before I purchased insurance with them. I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW NOT TO GO WITH THIS COMPANY.

Bad Business

MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE -- I was involved in an accident. The car was mildly damaged. The insurance company claimed it was totaled. The third party was paid right away. I told the insurance company I would pay the difference. The claims adjuster had already made her mind up, with no talking to her. The insurance company sure loves taking your money, but when paying out that's a different story.

The damage to the car was less than half the value of the car. I have been fighting for the right thing to do. It has caused me nothing but grief. So let them say they do right thing by you, this insurance company is the biggest rip off I have ever encountered. Think again about them saving you money. I hope karma comes soon. Feeling very ripped-off.

Scammers!!!

BATON ROUGE, LOUISIANA -- I purchased Direct through carinsurance.com. The quote was 652.00 for 12 months. The quote was based on the information I provided, which was all true & valid. I purchased and paid in full, big mistake! They decided to increase my premium by an additional 311.00. The reasons they gave were proof of previous coverage and proof of residency. I provided the information by fax and by mail. They told me that they either did not receive it or it was not good enough. Different stories depending on the representative. They are liars and scammers. They bullied me into paying the 311.00 or I would be cancelled immediately and out my 652.00.

The laws and regulations that monitor and supposedly protect consumers from scamming insurance companies like Direct are a joke. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ONLINE FROM ANYONE EVER AGAIN. I tried to save money and it ended up costing me more than buying from a local company or broker. As for carinsurance.com, they're just as dishonest as Direct General. AVOID THESE COMPANIES! I am not some disgruntled loser. Please learn from my experience and try to avoid buying auto insurance online. Do it face to face with everything in writing before you pay anything. Even the big companies like Geico can legally up your initial quote when purchasing on the internet.
