Inconsistent and Low Internet Speed

GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND -- Although 25 Mbps speeds are guaranteed (+/-20%) it is VERY inconsistent. I have had download speeds ranging from 35 Mbps to as low as 0.25 Mbps (yes that's 250 Kbps!!!!). The wi-fi could not penetrate through the house so I had to install a Net Gear to get the signal to reach my office. I even hardwired my TV into the modem to see if that would help... not. We still cannot download a Netflix without buffering.

Technical help has tried to troubleshoot and had me plug in computers at all the various locations. They have even replaced the modem which did help the office computers, but it still was not as strong as the Netgear signal. For $60 month we 20 GB/month data package with network speeds reminiscent of 2000... no viewing videos online for us. I tried to negotiate a lower rate because of the poor speed... nada. If we had an alternative, I would jump ship.

TAOS, NEW MEXICO -- Was told what their options were. Told them needed to be able to support fast enough speed for online schooling, also gaming and watch movies/videos. The first month was ok, but slow. Then when I called customer service on why it sucked so bad. They tell me that we should shut off all computers, laptops and media streaming if we wanted after service and only turn on when watching. And that we needed to buy tokens to get better service. The price was triple than any others and slower than all offered in our area. Then charged my credit card without authorization. We dropped the service, even though the wouldn't let me.

Even though I cancelled within 30 days of trying it out, complained every month they tried to charge us. The customer service sucked and wouldn't send boxes to send back equipment for over 6 months. It's a scam and they don't offer what you ask for. They sell you a package that you assume is correct after they ask 20-30 questions to determine what you need.

Then skip over the fact if you keep your computers on or media streaming like Roku or Apple TV it uses up your limit and you have to pay for faster service, making the great price just a farce to lure you in, then make you may two and three times the cost to keep a slow crappy service going. And won't cancel when you ask, and illegally charge your account without authorization. Don't get scammed, don't use this service. CenturyLink is faster and cheaper and won't gauge you for basic internet and WiFi.

The Absolute Worst Internet Service

GERMANTOWN, MARYLAND -- Service advertised connection to accommodate audio and video streaming but the connectivity is so slow this action is impossible without constant interruption. The service requires a 24-month contract regardless of the customers' dissatisfaction or lack of advertised service. Even after over a year of this execrable service the early termination is still over $300 and unacceptable. Their service was chosen after believing their lies about service and support... nothing has been provided. Our attempts to improve or cancel service only resulted in a HughesNet moron trying to sell an upgrade. This internet provider should be avoided to prevent frustration and a complete waste of money.

NINE MILE FALLS, WASHINGTON -- We have had HughesNet for about 5 months and the service had never worked right. Our service has been down for over a month with no resolution. The service was sold to us by Dish Network when we moved to a rural area. We asked the salesperson if the service supported Vonage, and was assured it would. It doesn't. HughesNet has their own proprietary phone service and will not support Vonage.

We have not been able to connect our Dish Hopper box to the service so we cannot watch Netflix, or connect Alexa. The service is slow, if and when it works. I wanted to cancel the service and was told we would have to pay $350. Now we are paying for a service we cannot use, and they will not do anything to help. DO NOT USE THEIR SERVICE!!! I would not give them any stars except it's required!

Customer Service/Billing

FRANKLINTON, NORTH CAROLINA -- Hughes Net "customer service" is either unhelpful or nonexistent. My first month as a customer, I had a payment taken out automatically without my consent. When I called to find out why, I was told it auto billing was standard unless the customer requested a paper bill. I had requested paper billing when I signed up for the service, but when I explained this to the service person, I was told that since the bill was a valid charge they were unable to reverse the unauthorized charge, and referred me to my bank to dispute the charge.

By the time my bank would have resolved the issue, it would be time for the next billing cycle, so I let it go. I repeated my request for paper billing, and was told I would receive a paper bill 7-10 days before the billing cycle. The company went through 2 billing cycles without sending a bill and I had to again call and request a paper bill.

The latest fiasco occurred when I went online to make a payment, and the portal did not indicate the payment went through, so I waited a few minutes and tried again with the same result. When I called to find out what happened and explained my card was charged twice, the customer service representative said he was unable to reverse the second charge; I requested to speak to his supervisor and again explained I was charged twice for the same transaction. She again stated they were unable to reverse the second charge. I wish there were another alternative to this company for internet access in my area, because I would drop HughesNet like a hot potato! They have the worst customer service I have ever dealt with anywhere!

JEROME, IDAHO -- We ordered HughesNet last year on a promotional - it was the worst decision we made. Internet service was continuously slow or nonexistent. My bill was never accurate, and it was always a fight to get it fixed. When the promotional ended, my cost jumped exponentially. I canceled the service because it was expensive and it was crap. Imagine my surprise when, after we had sent the whole transponder and everything back, I get a bill for nearly $700. I called them, told them I had the receipt for the cancellation and the return of equipment, and they said it would be taken care of.

It was... courtesy of a nasty call from a collection agency. When I told the collection agency I had canceled the service and returned the equipment, I was told it didn't matter, and I had better plan on paying the whole bill. Then the collection agent hung up on me. I have received at least 1 call every day from this collection agency, even though I have made it clear I don't owe the money, and I won't accept their calls. Don't get HughesNet. It is the worst service ever, and when you cancel the service they will trump up what you owe.

Bad Experience

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA -- First off, I was lied to on several occasions about using HughesNet in conjunction with Amazon Fire to stream and watch movies. I was told it would work fine and many HughesNet customers have Amazon Fire to watch movies with. In the 1.5 years we had HughesNet, not one movie was seen (poor reception). The WiFi was so slow, we turned it off and used our mobile data. Whenever you call customer service, the agent would tell me to check my settings and then would run a “check my data”, after about an hour, everything is supposed to be fine. Bottom line, go anywhere else for internet unless you have no other options.

SHARPSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- If you are reading this, do NOT get Hughes net unless you really liked dial up from 1999. This is the worst internet service I have ever had in the past 20 years. The only reason I got it, in the first place, DirecTV was offering it as a bundle package. I was told satellite service was the fastest available, wrong! I called within the first 30 days to cancel it and was told it would cost $400.00!

Seriously, within the first 30 days, what kind of service is that? To watch one movie on Netflix it would take 4 hours of constant buffering. We could only use screen mirroring on our TV with our cell phones. Our family could not take it anymore, I called to cancel and had to scream at the person to cancel it as they would not listen to me. It cost me $250.00 and I went back to cable. I may have to make 10 payments on my credit card to pay off that money but we can actually watch a movie in 1 hour and 46 minutes, my kids can play video games, and I can actually use my lap top again. I wish I had read the reviews before I ever agreed to the DirecTV package with Hughes net. You might as well take a few $1,000 and throw it out the window because that's how good your money would be worth for this piece of crap.

Horrible Service

LAMPASAS, TEXAS -- This company will blow your mind by the degree and lengths they will lie, cheat and steal. I hate saying it, would love to say otherwise, but facts are facts. It is tragic yet comical to read the complaints that are on their very own website; it is like they are proud to show how bad their customer service is.

Amazing display of ugly behavior and lies via their employees...from the offshore call centers to the rare time you can actually get an English speaking based in the United States, it is one long line of fraudulent behavior. Probably the best (worse) con artists I have ever dealt with in 56 yrs on planet Earth. You've been warned! You deserve what you get if sign up with their service after reading online reviews.

Very Poor and Inconsistent Performance

Rating: 1/51

ALABAMA -- We installed HughesNet about a month ago - BIG MISTAKE!!! They cannot perform consistently. They advertise 25 Mbps download and 3 Mbps upload, but do not come close to providing that. One night working for about an hour with engineering they got the download speed to about 25 Mbps and when I asked them about the upload speed which was running at 0.5 Mbps he wanted to know why I wanted that! And, then admitted that adjusting the upload speed would affect the download speed which it did.

He wanted to know if we were through. I said no, that I wanted a couple of days to see if performance stayed adequate. Well, he closed the case as fixed and two nights later the download speed was testing (testmy.net which they recommended) at 1.5 and 1.0 MBPS at 8:35 pm. I work during the day and need the internet at night. Then when I wanted to cancel the service, they slapped me with a $400 fee for their non-performance. I would NOT recommend using HughesNet, and as far as I am concerned they are not reputable.
