Almost Taken for a Ride!!
Posted by Thirddaystir on 07/08/2013
TEMPLE, TEXAS -- I went into a Just Brakes for an inspection and the "$99.95 special". My brakes had no problems and stopped the truck on a dime. I was told that I had a bad pulse in the brake pedal(which I didn't feel). They took the wheels off and inspected all rotors and pads. I got a $1300.00 estimate on a brake system that previously had no problems. They told me the usual lines. All calipers need to be rebuilt, all rotors need to be replaced. All pads need replaced(1/2 inch of material on all pads). Your serpentine belt isn't cracked but should be replaced anyway. Your air filter is dirty( I think I can replace an air filter).Needless to say, I told them to put it back together and I'd pay them for the inspection and the fluid flush.

I'm not sure I got an entire system flush, just glad to get out with a $60.00 bill. I would advise anyone to stay away from Just Brakes!!

Whole I agree that these places are a scam. .. your pay is disingenuous in that a person with a perfectly working brake system as you claimed would never go in for an inspection

This Place Will Tell You Anything to Get You to Spend as Much as They Can Take From You.

I was told I needed more then I actually did. I said no thanks and they gave it to me good. I had to have my brakes re done at a credible and most professional shop. I paid for a brakes job and got the cheapest brakes they could put on my truck.

Just Brakes is a scam and they shouldn't be allowed to have a license to even drive a car........!!!!!!!!!

Just Brakes - Just Dishonest - Just Scams
Posted by Mariaroche on 04/08/2012
ARIZONA -- Just Brakes, Mesa, AZ., was supposed to provide a "Free Estimate", but instead the salesman forged signing of approval and started the work prior to providing the estimate; thus, scammed the customer and defrauded out of $770+.

Research shows that the company sends TEAMS of 2 to each outlet teaching how to SCAM and cheat customers; then, they don't do some of the services or overcharge doing unnecessary work - anything to jack up the bill; then, totally disrespectful and hostile to their customers. Those that worked there say the Target customers by their cars, their age and defraud the elderly and women, in particular, as well as anyone with a nicer than avg. car - anyone they feel they can defraud. Moreover, not only the inexperienced Salesmen are dishonest, but the entire company has a BUSINESS MODEL of Consumer Fraud and even engage in criminal activities like forgery and lying about the work needed. JUST DISHONES & JUST A SCAM.

It is quite an allegation that the entire company engages in fraudulent and illegal activities.
Posted by ChuhBaca on 2012-04-09:
This company is bad news. Several years ago, an investigative reporter had the entire brake system on a car, checked out ahead of time and everything checked out. They then took the vehicle to Just Brakes, where they provided an estimate of about $600 worth of work on the brakes.
You hear that over and over again with Just Brakes. People getting 2nd opinions and discovering Just Brakes was trying to charge for unnecessary work.
As far as the OP alleging that this is part of a corporate strategy, I don't think they are too far off. If you listen to the commercials, the fast talker at the end states that MOST cars will require more than brake pads.
What is even worse, I have had very good experiences with Brakes Plus. Unfortunately, many people confuse the 2 names.

Always amazes me when price shoppers go for low ball ads at these chains or wherever and then are dumbfounded when they get ripped-where's the common sense? too good a deal to be true?-- yeahhh!
Posted by CowboyFan on 2012-04-09:
In Florida, there is basically a procedure where you can post the money for the repairs with the Clerk of the Court, who will issue an immediate court order for the release of the vehicle from the mechanic. That way the customer has the car, while the mechanic has 60 days to proceed with court action as to whom should have the money. Florida Statute 559.917.

If there is a dispute with an automobile repair shop, one might check with an attorney to see if their state has a similar law.

The Real Truth - Point Blank
Posted by Pug4 on 02/22/2011
This message is for anyone one who wrote an ignorant review on here about Just Brakes, when they don't know the first things about brakes or any type of automotive repair.

First things first. If anyone here can find a price cheaper than 99.88 Plus 6 dollar shop supplys and tax...It comes to 113.29..You let me know. Nobody even comes close. This also included machining all 4 of my rotors and replaced pads on all four wheels. Listen up people!!! Pads are not the only thing on your brake system!!! Theres about 50 componets to your brakes besides pads...Everyone on this blog drives there car until they hear a noise and then drive for 6 more months. So by the time they get to the repair shop, storming in saying..I wun that 99.88 Deal. I aint want nothing else. Well guess what. If you want to save on brakes. Do it yourself. So when it messes up..Well see your bright and shining face at Just Brakes.

This is it. Just brakes didn't tell you to drive on your grinding brakes for 4 months and then wonder why you need 400 dollars of brake repair..Give me a break people. You brought the car to them. They didn't grag you in. And if most people forgot..Its your car stupid..If you don't like the price take your car somewhwere else

The problem is, many of the complaints against "Just Brakes" ring true.

One small piece of evidence is the Dateline piece on Just Brakes. It revealed that most customers are charged many times the $99 special price. It is common sense that a place like Just Brakes would rip you off. They aren't your regular mechanic, they don't expect to see you again.

I do my own brakes - I'd advise others to do the same. You don't need to worry about me darkening your door - it won't happen.
Posted by carl on 2011-07-07:
I agree with the poster pug4 about people coming in after the problem has developed. It's like going to the dentist. If you go every six months like you're suposed to, it will cost you $50 each time. If you wait 12 years and then show up because your mouth/teeth are in pain, it will cost you $1200 to fix the problem. As with anything, the longer you wait to fix it, the more the fix will cost. Use common sense people.

I have been a brake mechanic for over 22 years. NO not for Just Brakes or some overnight shop. in someones back yard. Yes most people do wait far to long to have repairs done to their brake system. Those of you that think just putting pads on you disc is a brake job you are so wrong that it isn't even funny. Do you know how to inspect the entire brake system? Do you know how to work on ABS systems? Do you know what will cause your front end to shake when you brake and how to fix that? It will be my guess no to all the above. I have done more redo's coming to my shop where people have tried to do their own brakes and had no clue of what they were really doing. At the same time I have had just as many redo's from other shops that have used cheap parts. Just remember cheap work isn't good and good work isn't cheap. Do not get taken on the belief that new pads or shoes for your car will fix everything have it checked out by a pro. As for the slap nut Pug4 looks like he needs to put down the bottle before he tries to type a message.

The problem is most people are ignorant about brakes, that's why they take their cars to a shop to be repaired. By so call professionals (just brakes) I have been a mechanic for over 35 years and most cars do not need calipers, springs, hoses and all the other crap just brakes sell you. There are times when those parts need replacing, the complaint is just brakes sells these items all just about every car they work on. I think pug4 must work for just brakes or his brother does.

Buyer Beware
Posted by Zippydoda1236 on 11/18/2010
ARVADA, COLORADO -- Watch out! Everytime you go into a certain auto repair shops they will always add on to any work you want done. I have a great mechanic who owns his own shop, but the $48 alignment special seemed like a good deal at Just Brakes. I left the truck and came back in an hour as told. It was still on the lift.(bad sign!)They wanted to speak to me about the truck. I just KNEW what was next they added on a load of rubbish repairs that I knew I did not need. So $48 becomes almost a $1000!!! I left without doing anything and went to my mechanic who wanted only a fraction for needed repairs and upkeep. Beware!!!! Auto repair shops (in particular the chains) will try to get all the money they can from you. I have seen this MANY times in my life. I have had shops say I've needed something done when I just did the work myself in the previous 2 weeks. Find a good independent shop and get customer reviews online as much as possible. You will save money. Find a good mechanic and stay with them. Be careful, they are waiting to rip you off and that's the honest truth!!!

Just Brakes Is Just Fraud
Posted by Rippedoffjustbrakes on 09/29/2010
NEVADA -- Don't go to this place! Everything they say is a lie. I was ripped off for something I did not need when I am poor. I went for brake pads at their $99 & instead they did something I did not want, did not request, and did absolutely no brake pads. $60 for absolutely nothing. Go to a legtimate, honest place only.

Never go here. They are not in business to put brakes on your car, they are in business strictly to rip people off.

What do you claim they did? To charge you $60, they HAD to have done something. Brake shops don't quite tell the whole truth, but the $99 they quote is just to install front pads or rear shoes. That is all. No rotors or drums turned, no bearings repacked, no hardware replaced, even if it needs it. They will try to make you aware of this, but it will be charged in addition to the $99. There is no way of knowing until the brakes are dismantled exactly what it needs, I would never just replace the brakes pads or shoes. If a brake job is done, it should be completely done.

Just brakes
Posted by Jbenn818 on 09/02/2010
KATY, TEXAS -- People need to realize that 100 dollars does not always fix a car. the manager at the just brakes in Katy TX explanation for me he said that every customer gets the 99 dollar brake job. they do something no other brake repair company does they take the entire brake system apart and examine the complete system from the inside out. and then find the root of what caused the problem that got you there in the first place... my brake job might not have been 100 dollars but I think I got a quality repair and I also now understand how my brakes work so before people start saying bad things about this company take your car to another repair facility and see what it will cost there... these are the good guys... and they are motorist assurance program approved... A+

I did my own brakes this past weekend, new rotors and pads, a bottle of brake fluid, some anti-squeal grease and a c-clamp. Took me an hour and cost about $110.

It's actually quite easy

Isn't this a compliment?

And for those of you who would like to learn how to change the brakes on your vehicle, go to YouTube. DIY repairs and maintenance are priceless!
Posted by Starlord on 2010-09-02:
When you see a place advertising brakes for $99, you must realize that that is not four-wheel brake repair. Normally speaking, that is one axle, either front wheel or rear wheels, and is a reline. They may turn the drum or rotors, but usually,it is brake pads for disc brakes and shoes for drum brakes. If they discover any other problems, like blown wheel cylinders, calipers, or a bad master cylinder, or even weak or broken brake hardware, they will charge you to fix it. Get an estimate in writing before one wrench touches your vehicle, specifying what work you will be getting for your money, and how much, if any, they are authorized to go over the initial estimate without your explicit okay. You are responsible for protecting yourself from overcharging. The brake shop is there to make money.
Posted by Disaster Worker on 2010-09-02:
I beg to differ with the OP as Just Brakes has come under investigation many times in Texas by the AG for disception. In 1986, I was a victim of a JB $99 job. They get you in the door then come up with all sorts of problems that must be fixed immediately with the bill usually in the $400-800 bracket. Do a little research on Just Brakes. The OP just got lucky. They are crooks.

Just Brakes Reps are Hustlers and Hustlers only !!!!
Posted by Houstyonian on 05/28/2010
HOUSTON, TEXAS -- If you live in Texas and if you need to get your brake pads/shoes done along with your rotors re surfaced, becarefull when you take it to Just Brake( any Location). their Reps are trained to scare you to death and try to tell you that you need calipers Repaired and What not( regardless of the car that you have).they will tell you that your brakes are wearing out inconsistently and you will probably die because your car is in a critical condition. they use words such as over heating, crystalization, and everything that they can make up to get you into buying repairs that you will not be able to see in the first place. if you must, just get t your brake pads changed and rotors resurfaced from them and make sure you keep the paper work because your pads are under lifetime warranty and you can take them back to just brakes and get new ones for much less. don't agree to any dramatic stories that they give you regarding abnormal wear and tear of brake pads"DONT FALL FOR IT" . if you look at the receipts you will see that they have arbitration clauses in their because of which you can not file a law suit against them. their 99$package is good but their company is crooked as you know what !!! . just get the brakes and get out. sincerely, an aware customer

Hit the Bank...For Just Brakes
Posted by Junkymoney on 02/21/2010
I have a 2008 Jeep Compass...I had started to have an occasional squealing issue when braking. I thought it odd that they would do this at 35k, but figured I should have them checked out, JUST IN CASE. Due to my work schedule for the next 3 weeks, I would be unable to make it to the dealership during business hours. So instead, on a Saturday, I stop in at the JUST BRAKES on Louetta Road, Spring, Texas to have them inspect and repair.

It sounded like disaster from the start. First...They only have HALF my brakes pads in-stock. That DQ'd be from the 99.88 special. Then after they dismantled all four tires...a young man wants to walk me on my inspection. My stomach begins to turn as he states "Crystallizing Front Pads due to excessive heat exposure" "Rotors in need of repair" "Back calipers are sticking causing delays and unnecessary wear"......GRAND TOTAL WAS $561 and change.

I simply told them to put my car back together and I would have a friend take it to the dealership on Monday. My excuse was, "There it will be free under warranty"

I get a call from the dealership on Tuesday to report to me that NOTHING IS WRONG WITH YOUR CAR. I asked about the "crystallizing pads" and they explain that my car has SEMI-METALLIC BRAKE PADS....they are comprised of little pieces of metal...thus causing an occasional squeak or two from time to time as they wear down. GRAND TOTAL WAS $0...no repair needed.

Just Brakes is notorious for that. They lure you in with the $99 special then try to perform a bunch of work that you don't need.

It's a shame because I have had nothing but good experiences with Brakes Plus, and unfortunately people confuse the two names. I took my truck to the dealership, they wanted to perform some brake work. Took it to Brakes Plus and they checked it out and concluded that I didn't need that work. Total cost=$0. When it came time to actually do that work, I took it back to Brakes Plus.

I saw this story on my local news channel about them:
http://www.wftv.com/action9/22592818/detail.html

I wouldn't trust them with my vehicle, voted helpful.

Great link Soaring!

So Just Brakes tried to swindle you out of almost $600? Write a letter to their main office and remind them of the news story in the link that is provided in Soaring Consumers post. I'd also write to the bureau of automotive repair (if you have one in your state) and tell them about this.

Don't Go To Just Brakes
Posted by NotTwice on 12/26/2009
When I took my Saturn in for a simple replacement of shoes and pads, I knew I should walk away after they had all the parts laying on the garage floor and told me I needed this and that for about $600. I have, personally, rebuilt both shoe (Bendix) and disk brake systems since I was 18 years old for less than $100 for the whole system. Granted, I took the disks and drums to a machine shop to be cleaned up for $5 apiece. I know I was stupid, but the last complete brake job I did was 12 years ago, and I'm now 63. Can't stoop so well anymore. I did completely rebuild 4 engines in my life, beginning with a 52 Chevy which was clogged with old oil from slow driving around town when I took all the pistons home to clean the ring grooves out at my dining
room table. When that old girl was cleaned out, she held a nice 80 mph all the way to the Quad Cities on her six without a whimper. Solid Car.

Again, just don't go to Just Bakes unless they explain in detail every line and small line that they tell you, sign here and initial there; because you are signing a binding contract. Most don't. I would never do it again.
