A Good Alternative
I have been using Netspend since they came to town, about 8 years ago I am guessing. Once you realize the fees that are involved and use the card wisely it provides a great service.

Never again! I decided to have my unemployment directly deposited on the Netspend card to make it more convienent to pay bills. I have not received it yet and its already 9:45am. I am definitely changing back to my old method and will never do this again. Hopefully my car won't be repoed since today I was to make a payment. I am so disappointed.

I was also to add on to my rent money and can't do that and my husband is livid. This may not be a usual occurrence but for me once bitten, twice shy.
I had my tax refund set up to get deposited onto my Netspend card. The card was ordered online the same day I filed my taxes. About 11 days later I saw on the IRS website that my refund was being direct deposited, before my card even arrived. I checked my account online and my balance was zero. So I called and they told me they had no record of an order. To make a long story short because they messed up by not sending my card out when they should have, my refund got sent back to the irs. So now I have to wait for a paper check. This is after calling Netspend every day for 5 days straight to find out when my refund would post(every time I called they said it post in 2 hours. When I finally called p###ed off on tues. Morning these idiots informed me they rejected the deposit because they couldn't verify my identity w/out a card. Now I received 2 cards from these idiots in the last 2 days.
I cut those suckers up and threw them out. I advise anyone w/ an ounce of common sense to stay as far away from Netspend as you can. There are so many other better debit card companies out there.
My Experience With Netspend

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- The card itself is good, the customer service is alright. I tried to dispute a charge from a Shell gas station over by the Austin-Bergstrom Airport (DO NOT GO TO THIS STATION!!!!) and they were very helpful in putting the money back in my account.
The Instant Bank transfer doesn't work on the website, they charge you 50 cents if you don't want to wait 30 minutes getting the website to load to find out your account balance, they have no technical support center and I don't think customer service could spell "broadband", and you have to go to a n H-E-B if you don't want to pay any additional reload fees.
Other than that, it's a decent card, but not something I would try and use as a long-term bank account. It's only something if you are in desperate need like I was for about a month or two.
I have had a premier Netspend account for over 2 years and an Ace account for almost 4 years. As a premier member, you could take a cash advance against your Direct Deposit, i used it almost every month, and then without warning the cash advance was discontinued. No warning, and I was out 500 dollars, I have had no problem with Netpsend against that . Some warning should have been given to all of us that the Advance was being discontinued. There was no reason why it was discontinued, very sad for us loyal customers.2 Replies - Latest reply on 11/05/2010Add reply
I received a netspnd card in the mail that I did not request. I figured it's pre paid why not put some money on it then?So I signed up online then called customer service after being declined after transferring money onto it and printing out the transaction screen. They said what is my social security number maiden name and married name lol. I said I do not give that information out to anyone esecially for a pre-paid card. Then the continued to ask me to fax my ssn card and state id. I went to JAG and they followed my ssn and found unusual activity by the "corporation" now they are going under investigation as soosn asJAg is able is finish my investigation and prtect my ssn again. Now in formation everyone is told not to get or use Netspend and the word is being put out to all post everywhere now.Add reply
