DALLAS, TEXAS -- I deposited a 4 digit check and it usually takes 3 days to clear but now all of a sudden it takes a week! I called and was told that because this is the highest amount I've ever deposited it would take longer. Also they said there was a problem verifying the funds which is bull! The check was from my grandparents who give all their grandkids a high amount for Christmas every year (I'm positive there is no problem with their funds)! They also asked me what the check was for with a suspicious undertone. Thanks. I usually go cash my check directly at my grandparents bank so I don't have to wait for it to clear and I wish I would've done that again because now I've got to tighten up my finances because I've been spending like it would clear in the regular 3 days. Also it takes three days for a Capital One check to clear so make sure you "conveniently" cash your Capital One check and then deposit it so you don't have to wait 3 days for a check from Capital One to clear at Capital One! When this check finally clears I will be closing my account and finding a better bank!

Banks do place holds from time to time. I've had it happen once or twice.

It's pretty hard to assess whether this was inappropriate or not, as every situation is different. If holds are a regular occurence, that is an obvious problem.

This is when you find out that the 'cyber' banks aren't really such a good deal, after all. It would have been a non-issue at your neighborhood credit union.

I have to agree with the previous comments. There are absolute concerns over check kiting.
