24 Hour Fitness and Its Sleazy Sales Tactics
By -

SANTEE, CALIFORNIA -- Wanting to improve my health I went into 24 Hour Fitness in Santee, Ca. I was met by a Salesman and given a deal as well as a Pass for a week to try the facility out. Of course when I returned with my daughter to sign up for two memberships I was met with lies, untruths and the dreaded Sales pitch that has dollar signs floating above the salesman's head. Basically he lied and tried to convince us that we misunderstood, got it all wrong and he was so upstanding that he would fix it all with a visit to his manager.

We left with him running out behind us... Yelling that he was a straight shooter and we just misunderstood. He even lied about calling our home to tell us that the Special would not be in place when I told him I would be coming back to join. I was at home when he called and listened as he said nothing and hung up. He didn't leave a message... He just tried to sell us a plan that was costly. I was treated as if I was senile as I am in my 60s.

I am sure that wasn't the first time He tried to act as if a senior wasn't all there. I left saying that I would never return and that I would complain to his company. He was unethical and my next letter will be to his Boss and the Regional Corporate Offices. 24 Hour Fitness isn't the place for anyone who wants a Healthy Environment to improve their overall well being.

Billing

BAYTOWN, TEXAS -- I went in to get a membership for myself and my boyfriend. They told me that the cheapest they could give is 60.00 a month for myself and 30.00 for my boyfriend a month. All I had to pay was the first and the last month no initiation fee. So I paid 50.00 for a deposit and I would owe 113.54 on my account and 45.00 on his, so I got the membership but they told me I had 7 days if I wanted to change my mind.

I went online and saw they had a special for 30.00 a month and no initiation fee. All I had to pay was first and last month. So went back 3 days later and told them to change the account and they said yes. I asked them what I owed. They said 113.54. I paid that amount the same day.

All I was going to pay a month was 60 plus tax for two. The following month they took out 157.79 out of my account. Went back and they told me that I had to bring them back the receipts of what I paid, have to go and get bank statements showing off what I paid. Supposed to be first month was going to be 120.00 for two. The following month was only 60.00 for two, total for 2 months 180.00 plus tax. Got charge 50.00 deposit, 113.54 supposedly what I owed, 157.79 the following month. Total for 2 months 321.33. They owe me 141.33.

Beware, Locker Broken Into Here
By -

Exercise equipment is dated but did have lap pool, sauna and steam room that I enjoyed. However, my locker was broken into and wallet taken. I filled out an incident report and when I returned the next day they could not find the report that I just filled out 12 hours prior. The manager did check with the cleaning company if they recovered anything and did call me back. The LV metro did arrest two persons that apparently were breaking into lockers with combination locks. They did recover my driver's license and other ID but no cash or credit cards. I give this a low rating as security is lacking and I don't know what the staff did with my incident report.

Customer Service Is TERRIBLE. All They Want Is Your $$$.

HATE 24 Hour Fitness! Joined while I was working out of town and had to put a freeze on it every time I went home because they had no gyms in my state. If that wasn't enough of a reason, they limited the freeze to only 6 months which I had money paid to them already with my account frozen. EVERY time I had to call, it was a mess.

Customer service reps would not assist, even argued with me at one point. And now that I am working out of state again and want to reinstate my membership, they will not help me again!! They want me to start all over and pay initiation fees and first/last month dues. Which they still owed me 2 months I had already PAID for!! Their customer service is HORRIBLE. ALL they want is your dollars.

Poor Customer Service

I have sent several emails to your club manager at Newark 546 since February of this year. I have asked that a few small items be addressed and tended to, however a ceiling fan that I pointed out over 5 months ago as not working still hasn't been repaired. This fan is located over the cardio area adjacent to the men's locker room. Mr. has asked that I be patient and I think 5 months is patient enough. As I had thought about upgrading my membership, now I am considering prorating the duration of my 24-hour membership and going to another gym entirely.

This lack of attention and poor performance on the part of 24 Hour Fitness and its staff speaks volumes and as I indicated above, I am considering switching gyms and so are a few others. The common thread among your members is? Why would you pay more fees if 24 won't take care of the simple things when needed? In other words, why throw good money after bad. I think it's fair to say that we are tired of the run around!

Poor Maintenance, Unsanitary Conditions, Indifferent Staff

MESQUITE,, TEXAS -- I have been a member of at Mesquite, TX (on Galloway Ave) 24 Hour fitness for nearly 10 years. Most of that time I have enjoyed the facility and the standards they have maintained. But within the last year or so, things have slipped badly. Carpets are badly stained with seams worn ragged. Tiles in several areas in the locker room are coming loose or falling out. The only thing retaining it is cardboard and duct tape. (Really!)

Locker doors are often badly warped with some of them unable to close and/or lock. Equipment can go months without repairs, and the locker room cleaning crew come entirely too infrequently: toilet paper is frequently absent, the floors are sometimes absolutely filthy with wet TP and dirt mixed together, toilet seats are rarely cleaned. Moreover, the roof leaks whenever it rains.

No complaint has any effect, and the only hope is a rumor that the club will move to a new location within the next year but the rumor also says they will upgrade so they can jack up price. It won't be much help if the current maintenance strategy is continued.

BEAVERTON, OREGON -- I joined 24 Hour Fitness March 1, 2010 at Scholls Murray Place, Beaverton, Oregon. I am 68. I was told by ** that it was mandatory to pay 129 for 3 sessions of private training when you join. He said though if for any reason I didn't like pt I could get my money back. I took my first session and barely could walk after for 4 days. I called and decided to cancel my membership on March 19, 2010. They told me I have to come in in order to cancel. I came in and asked to cancel my membership.

I asked them if I could get a refund for pt. They said "Yes" because I had only been there 19 days. The next day they called me and asked me why I wanted to cancel and I told them I wasn't comfortable with their gym, it was too big, too stuffy, not friendly and just not what I wanted at all. She told me that in order to get my pt refund I had to do 3 more sessions. I asked her "Why?" and she said "That's policy." I never ever saw any policy like that. I said "I had done one already." She said "That one doesn't count."

The first one was only an orientation one. I said again "I couldn't move for 4 days after the orientation one" and didn't want to do anymore and she said "Too bad, that's policy." Any advice on how to get my refund? Would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Mekee/ 24 Fitness, San Jose, Ca

SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA -- I ran to Mckee Gym in San Jose, Ca. That was convenient from my previous residence, I wanted to try something new like the Speedos in which I see numerous amount of people wearing from time to time. I was sitting in the sauna when the staff told me to come there. In a Demeaning was this man said to me "what's wrong with you?!" You need to put your pants on (at this point I was confused because there was 2 other elderly men wearing speedos as well).

I did not want to fuss so I complied. Once I had my sweat pants on he hovered over me talking in a very dominant voice saying "You got to leave my gym" (YOU GOT TO GO!!!). I stood up and was questioning this, because I complied. He was in my face (so close that I could feel saliva bouncing on me). Might I add this was in front of various other 24 members. Thus wanting no trouble I complied. While I walking out he was at the point of pushing me (as he stepped on the back of my shoes numerous times). That night I was "Very" humiliated & am embarrassed to attend a gym I pay for.

Bad Service, Bad Attitude, Discriminatory Practices

DENVER, COLORADO -- I was refused entry to a class that had 7 open spots for sign up. I asked the guy why I couldn't go in and he wouldn't give me any explanation except the class was full. Then, he let 2 other people in the class after turning me away. I weigh over 200 pounds.

I complained to higher ups and received rudeness and chauvinism. Nobody has given me any more explanation than it was a "mistake" and they that's that. I feel I've been discriminated against and I think I was not allowed in the class because they perceived me to be some sort of liability because of my weight. Every person at 24 Hour Fitness I have spoken to about this has been apathetic and rude.

Poor Maintenance

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA -- I have belonged to the Andre Agassi 24 hour Fitness center in Summerlin, NV since they opened. I have always considered it a premium club until recently. It is beginning to take on a shoddy look and equipment and amenities are broken and down for too long. The area most noticeable is the pool area, steam room and sauna.

The steam room has been shut down for approx. 2 months now and there is no sign of any work being done on it. The staff is nice enough and they say that they are working on fixing it, but I have heard the same basic story for 2 months. I switched to the sauna and twice have fallen when the bench came off as I was stepping down. The wood bench lies on the tile without being secured.

The decking around the pool and Jacuzzi is stained and has a black tint to it. The rinse shower by the pool is usually not working, cold or leaking, so I have to go into the locker room to rinse off to go into the pool. Actually the plumbing has never been very good at this location, with the shower drains backing up and some of the hot/cold faucets reversed.

I have stopped recommending this club and recently moved some of my family to another competitive club. If things don't improve soon, I will be joining them. This facility has a good location and good potential, but it obviously is not being maintained at a level equal to its initial reputation. Too Bad...
