Worst experience ever with an upscale furniture store
By -

CATONSVILLE, MARYLAND -- My experience with Ashley home furniture has been the worst. I purchased a beautiful bedroom set in 2009, which included the bed/dresser and a nightstand. I then decided to purchase the armoire to complete the entire set. So here is where the madness comes in.

I purchased the armoire and requested that it be delivered. Well needless to say.. on a rainy afternoon the delivery men call, and ask that I come down from my apartment (4th floor) and hold the front door open for them. Well finally the two men hauled the armoire in the building, with the rain dripping wet from both pieces without a covering. Then they hauled the 2 pieces onto the elevator and proceeded to place the armoire inside.

They then walked the armoire down the hallway to my door. The two men then place the armoire in my bedroom, and had me to sign for the delivery and asked me to walk them back to the elevator. I told them to go straight down the hallway, turn left and push the key to the lobby, and I then closed the door. Well needless to say, I inspected the furniture only to find that the bottom drawer had a large size hole in it and the front doors were on uneven and the story goes on.

I called customer service to notify them of the problem and was then told that they would reorder a bottom drawer and a service technician would come to handle the uneven front door. Well I did receive the reordered drawer only to find that it had been damaged.

I called customer's service once again, and of course they blamed the damages on the item being mishandled by the process by which the furniture was taken from the warehouse and then being delivered to me. Well this is unacceptable to me, Ashley Home furniture is supposed to be an upscale, top of the line furniture store. I would not advise anyone to make "ANY" purchases from this company.

What a Joke!!!

TURNERSVILLE, NEW JERSEY -- After dealing with Ashley, I can safely say I will NEVER purchase from them again and I would advise any potential buyers not to buy. We ordered a living room set, a bedroom set, and a set of tables for our family room. Living room set was OK, however, I had to fix 2 legs on the sofa because they were loose. Not a big deal, but still, you'd think they want to deliver that correctly. Next, the family room tables. One had a huge crack in the leg, which caused the table to lean and obviously it needed to be replaced. Once again, they had 3 months from time of order until our delivery date to make sure they provided a table in good condition, yet delivered a broken table.

Next, the bedroom set. Not only did I receive a damaged chest, this damaged chest was part of an entire bedroom set that I DID NOT ORDER!!! I had to argue with customer service and the store several times to have the correct furniture exchanged with the incorrect damaged set that they tried to dump on me. Not only that, they said they would TRY to waive the delivery charge for the new set. So they were pretty much saying that I was responsible to pay delivery for their mistake, but they were doing me a favor by waiving delivery. WOW!

Next, we received the correct bedroom set, however, the delivery crew scratched up almost every single wall that they could and not only that, 75% of the knobs on the furniture were screwed on crooked. Again, not a big fix for me since I'm handy, but you think a company would want to deliver their product in good condition to encourage future sales and prevent reviews such as this one. I'd also say that none of the furniture we received from Ashley comes even close to the quality of the furniture that they display in the store.

You can tell that the furniture they actually deliver is made way cheaper than the models they have in their showroom. The wood isn't as thick, the attention to detail is non-existent, and it looks like they were put together as quickly and as cheaply as possible. I'd give Ashley a 1 out of 10 and would advise to purchase elsewhere. I purchased other furniture from American Signature, JCPenney, and even Target and I like all of my furniture from those stores way better than the junk I wasted my money on from Ashley.

Worst Form Of Trickery

CARBONDALE, ILLINOIS -- 2 weeks ago my husband and I decided to purchase 3 items of kid's Cottage Retreat bedroom furniture (sleigh bed, dresser and mirror, chest). We went to the store, looked around, and chose these pieces for our 4 year old daughter--knowing that it probably isn't the highest quality furniture, but for a 4 year old that was okay.

We waited only 2 weeks for delivery, but they offered to deliver on a day that I had to work. My in- laws kindly offered to be at my home to allow access by the delivery men. When I arrived home that night, I was pleased with what I saw and started putting my daughter's clothes away. My daughter was thrilled.

However, when I went to put the clothes in the chest, I noticed that the top of the furniture was "sticky" feeling, and upon further examination, I found that there had been colored putty placed over a nail that had been hammered through a decorative piece and through the top of the furniture.

To me, they were just trying to cover up the fact that they had screwed up, and my father in law said that none of the delivery men ever mentioned this mishap to him.

Upon further inspection, I found that on the dresser, the wood at the bottom was peeling up and exposing particle board. Now, I want to be fair and say that I arrived home late tonight and found this and have not had a chance to call Ashley to see what they say when I tell them to come get the furniture and to refund all my money (which is my plan).

I feel they thought I was an idiot and that they would try to trick me with the putty, and therefore, I don't want them to fix it, I simply want it out of my house. I don't really want to make my 4 year old live out of boxes for months while they drag their feet. I won't wait that long and I will seek legal advice... Will keep posted.

Resolution Update 01/26/2009:

I had promised myself that if Ashley furniture resolved my issue that I would display it on this site where I had made my complaint. The following day that I had issues with the furniture I called Ashley and within 6 days they came to my home, picked up the furniture and refunded my money ( including delivery charge) without incident. I did end up paying 3 times as much for furniture at a local furniture store in my area that is of better quality. Eventhough I probably will not buy from Ashley again, they did allow me some customer satisfaction.

Horrible Customer Service, Problem Deliveries
By -

GRAPEVINE, TEXAS -- After 19 years of marriage, my husband and I decided to treat ourselves to a new bedroom set and go King size as an extra splurge. We purchased the whole thing from Ashley's of Grapevine, TX to include the box springs and mattress. Everything sounded great and wonderful from the sales people and they "talked" customer service but they sure didn't provide it.

Our set arrived earlier than expected. That was great. However the bed frame was sent with either defective or the wrong size bed slats so that the mattress could not be put on the frame. The delivery person called customer service and was instructed to return the whole bed frame. Seemed odd if the only problem was the wrong slats.

Because of the size and weight of the bed I had asked the delivery person to apply "furniture sliders" before leaving that I had separately purchased. He did so when he put the frame together. I wanted him to leave the frame and order new slats. I was told that I had to return the whole bed frame which now had "my sliders" added to them. They cost $6 but now I have had to spend an additional $10 to get the ones I wanted. I don't suppose the original frame will come back.

Once they left I noticed that the top of the chest of drawers was loose and lifted with pressure on the whole left side. Looking inside I found the right side secured with 3 screws... On the left side there were no screws just the screw holes. Though courteous enough no amount of complaints regarding getting the chest of drawers fixed speedily has worked nor has there been a speedy return of the bed frame. My husband was told that a technician would be here last Thurs. then this Thursday to fix the chest. Needless to say no one has called or showed up so I fixed it myself.

At this writing we are still awaiting our bed frame. Supposedly it was to be on a truck that arrived yesterday [Thurs.]. No one has called with confirmation of a replacement order or to set up a new delivery time. Our bed is on the box springs and mattress on the floor and has been there now for a week and a half. We threatened to cancel and return the whole order only to find out they have a "no return" policy that of course we were never told about! It may be in the fine print but it sure is not made known. Now I know why.

In our case we are pleased with our furniture. We found no other flaws. Our main complaint is the horrible customer service. THERE IS NONE!!! Ashley's prices are cheaper in comparison to many other stores. I guess it is because they do not intend to service anyone.

Morally Unethical Salesmanship/Store Policies

SAN DIEGO-MIRAMAR RD. -- I was appalled by my experience at Ashley Furniture. I accompanied my brother as he shopped for a bedroom set on the day after Thanksgiving. We saw a nice set that he liked and purchased it at about 4:00 pm. Upon arriving home, he measured the height of the room. The room fan was in the way. Going into the crawlspace in the ceiling he discovered there was no way to change the position of the fan or raise the ceiling -- the house is over 100 years old.

We went back to the store early the morning at 10:00 am -- just sixteen hours later. Ashley wanted to charge us a 30% restocking fee. They wanted $510 to cancel the sale!!! They said it had already been put into the computers --this on a holiday weekend, no less. Do you believe that? Well, I don't either. To avoid losing the $500 we were told we had to buy something for the $1700 cost of the bed. To us, this felt like unfair coercion and intimidation which could be termed a type of extortion. He bought a mattress, but it was really overpriced.

I will never ever ever buy anything more from Ashley furniture. I feel you will be sorry if you do as well... What happened to the California 3 return day law? Ashley had it in the very fine print that you waive it and must pay 30% to restock. Well neither of us had on our glasses and the salesman didn't mention it. There were signs on the counter, but we missed those as well.

I will never buy there again, and I suggest that buyer beware when it comes to Ashley. They appear to be a very unethical company according to the 100's of complaints found here on My3Cents. They won't stay in business long. Customers like me spread the word to all of their hundreds of friends, through emails and chats. I've already encountered several other friends that have had similar disastrous experiences with Ashley.

EVANSVILLE, INDIANA -- I was in need of a bedroom suite. Went to Ashley's after going to every store I had access to. Was immediately greeted by associate which was good. I kind of felt like she was following me but that's okay, she wanted the sell. Found a set by the name of SHAY. The base price was $897 for bed, rails, mirror and dresser. I requested a nightstand which was $134.91. By the time she got all the calculations, the total was 1377. WHAT?? Then she stated I would not receive it for another 3 to 4 weeks!!

I asked her what were the dimensions and this is where the customer service went downhill for me... she said it's on the website. Really? I asked a live sales representative and she referred me to a computer. I kindly said I will do that. First mistake, never let your customer leave so they can check a computer. I could have easily checked in the store but she could have too... SALE LOST. I went to another store that sold the very set and purchased the bed, mirror, dresser, chest and nightstand for 779.61. You lose again ASHLEY. Please get out of the furniture industry, you are no good at it from the reviews.

Poor Service

LAVERGNE, TENNESSEE -- I purchased a sleigh bed and it broke. I called the store. They sent someone out to inspect it. For whatever reason what was supposed to be two weeks turned into over a month. Before I received a partial delivery the tech came out and stated he could not fix my bed because all the parts were not there. Now I am told I have to wait an additional two weeks for an error on somebody else part. I have been misled lied to and even ignored. This is the worst experience I have ever had with a furniture store.

HOUSTON, TX 77064, TEXAS -- I will never buy from Ashley Furniture again! My husband and I bought an entire bedroom set from them 3/6/11, with the promise that it would be delivered 03/12/11. We explained that was the longest we really could wait and we were assured it would be delivered on that date.

We received a call from Ashley Furniture a few days later explaining the side rails to the bed were not available and they rescheduled for 03/15/11. We were upset but agreed. A couple of days later we get another call saying they could not deliver until 03/16/11. We reluctantly agree again, but let them know that is the latest we would accept. They called again today 03/14/11 to let us know the bed could not be delivered until 04/06/11, but they could deliver the side tables!

Needless to say we cancelled the order today and after wasting all that time, we are shopping for bedroom furniture again! (hopefully they will refund the money as promised, but that is probably hoping too much!) No one from Ashley even offered an apology! I will never shop there again and will tell everyone I know to avoid them like the plague!! Worst furniture shopping experience I have ever had!

Poor Quality - DO NOT BUY
By -

AUSTIN, TEXAS -- I purchased one of their most expensive bedroom sets 3 years ago. It consisted of queen size bed with headboard, 2 tall "bookend" bedside tables, and tall dresser with 5 drawers. The slide rails used on their drawers are the cheapest and worst quality rails I have ever seen. One of the bedside tables even arrived with the rails missing. 3 of the drawers in my dresser broke within 1 month of use. There are these plastic tabs that break off when there is any weight in the drawer.

I filled the drawer with about a dozen t-shirts and that was apparently too much for the rails. They sent out a repairman 2 times within the first 3 months of ownership. The repaired drawers lasted about 1 month until they were broken again. 3 years later I'm still trying figure out how to replace the rails with some that actually work and allow the drawer to close all the way. DO NOT BUY ANY FURNITURE FROM THIS COMPANY. IT IS A TERRIBLE VALUE AND WASTE OF MONEY.

MANSFIELD, OHIO -- I bought a bedroom suite from Ashley Furniture in Mansfield, Ohio back in 2010 and the salesperson order me the wrong bed frames so when I picked up my furniture I couldn't set up my bed. I then called the store and talked to the manager and he told me that they figured it out, yes they were the wrong frames and they would order me more. I waited and waited and they never called me back.

So I then called them back and he finally sent someone out. The man he sent out brought me a new set of frames but they were wrong so I had to wait to get another set because he finally said they discontinued the frames for that bed. So here it is 2011 and my bed is still not up. RUN FROM THIS STORE. THEY CAN'T CONDUCT GOOD BUSINESS!
