WORST Company- No Concern for Longtime Customer- Scams Consumer With Semantics

MCLEAN, VIRGINIA -- I have paid well more than the minimum balance every month for 8 months via my online banking account to CapitolOne. I set it up and never looked at my statement as I knew I was sending way more than the minimum balance. I paid my Dec 09 balance on time and then set up the auto banking to pay the subsequent months' bills 4 days after the due date of the Dec. bill. They were set to get there on the 21st of each month.

I should have looked at the bills as they came in but as we are all bombarded by a deluge of paperwork in the daily mail, since I knew I had set up monthly payments, I just filed the bills without studying them. Each month was paid. I never missed a payment.

Upon just contacting their customer service, I was informed that any payments that they received on either the 20th or 21st of each month were considered late for the prior month and TOO EARLY for the next month! I have paid this company each month but have been assessed a late charge each month because any payments arriving those two dates are considered BOTH late for the PRIOR month AND EARLY for the next month therefore earning me a late fee for 8 months despite them having the money at the beginning of each cycle.

When customer service was contacted, they did reverse 3 of the charges but would do nothing with the remaining ones. They could see a good faith payment on my part each month and as a customer for over 13 years, I expected this snafu to be better handled. If I had just chosen a 6 day window after my December due date when I set up this auto pay, I would have been fine.

I spoke with the original customer service person, his superior, David, and then a Senior Account Manager, Paula. When I informed Paula that I was very disappointed in my treatment by this company and that I would be contacting authorities at the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency in Texas as well as media outlets, she informed me that she was not afraid of my comments.

I just sent a check to pay off my balance and will never use this company again. Everyone should be warned of their lack of concern for their customers.

Very Very Unloyal

I have been a Capital One customer for a number of years now. I have a car loan, two credit cards, and an online money market account. Recently Capital One switched to an India call center, which has totally destroyed their product.

I called Capital One last year to cancel a credit card. I wasn't using it and I was charged a yearly fee. They waived the fee and promised that as long as the card is opened I would never be charged another yearly fee. Well to my surprise I was charged a yearly fee this year. I called to complaint to only get some guy in India who couldn't speak English. Now I"m not kidding, I was repeating words 4 to 5 times to even communicate. Finally I inquired about getting a refund, they said they won't do it, so in a conversation which was extremely hard to understand the guy closed my account.

I hate Capital One and I don't care about their card, but the fact that it was closed without my request, and due to an Indian call center and a guy that could not understand what I was requesting, I was rather insulted at the lack of customer service that this company would provide. I called back, spoke with an American manager, she admitted that they are having a terrible time and tons of complaints about their India call center, and then said they couldn't do anything about the card being closed.

Now I have a very high credit score, and years of history with this company. I have an online account with a decent amount of money in it, and yet this is how they treat good customers. I can only think that Capital One is headed for financial trouble so they are cutting costs and trying to retract credit any way they can to look good for their shareholders.

Oh yeah by the way, my second card that was a no fee card, yeah they changed that one as well and are charging me a yearly fee. They are the worst, I am counting the days till my car loan is done so that I can totally close out all of my accounts with this bank.

Avoid Capital One Like the Plague!

MCLEAN, VIRGINIA -- Mistakenly I decided to apply for a Capital One credit card. I called Capital One two weeks ago and spoke to a representative who kept me on the telephone for an hour gathering personal information and reading terms and conditions to me for twenty-five minutes. Today I got the card, and this is what happened.

I asked for a Visa card. I got a Mastercard. I asked for a cash-back card. I got a Platinum card without cash-back rewards. I asked for a no transfer fee of a Bank of America balance. I was charged $211 and change to transfer the balance. Your representative told me that the Bank of America balance would be transferred within 48 hours. It took two weeks. I had to stop a check to Bank of America and have it paid to Capital One.

I called the company to have YOUR errors rectified. I spoke to eight people all of whom gave me the same script about understanding my frustration and thanking me for being patient while they put me on hold. This occurred over a period of two hours.

This is what happened. ** tried to sell me my credit report information. I declined. ** could not help me with my complaint about the transfer fee and knew nothing about the Capital One online advertisement. She insisted upon getting my cell phone number as a secondary phone number. ** told me I would have to wait 45 days to start the process over again for a Visa card. ** a supervisor, disconnected me after an hour on the phone. ** an account manager, told me I would have to wait 90 days to start the process over again for a Visa card. ** a supervisor, said he could not rescind the transfer fee.

** a supervisor, said he could not hear what I was saying and had no way of calling me back because the telephone allowed only incoming calls. ** an account manager, deleted the transfer fee and gave me the Capital One mailing address for my payment.

The bottom line is I do NOT want the card. Cancel my account. You tout your company as being the best. I am VERY unimpressed with the lack of customer service you have shown from the outset of this transaction and foresee additional problems.

Capital One Needs To Be Investigated

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- I closed my Capital One Credit Card 4 years ago when I was living in Florida because I never used it. I closed it with a zero balance and I didn't want to continue paying a $50 annual service fee for a card I didn't use. After cancelling it with their outsource people in India or Pakistan, I thought it was taken care of. Three months later, I get a statement showing a $50 annual fee again for them. I call and get India again, explain I have cancelled my card three months prior, and get assured it is taken care of. Needless to say, it took me four months of phone calls to get this charge off of my closed account and get the card closed.

Three years ago I moved to Texas and all of a sudden, I start getting letters from my credit card companies saying they are raising my interest rate because of a delinquent account. I request a copy of my credit report and lo and behold, Capital One has charged me a $50 annual service fee on a card that was closed four years ago! That was in February and here we are in June. And I have spoken to 6 Account Managers and probably 50 people from India just to GET to the Account Managers. They finally show I have a zero balance but they FORGOT to show that I never had a late payment and they also show that THEY cancelled my card!

This company should be investigated for Fraud. This seems to be an ongoing problem with this company. Why aren't the Attorney Generals in each state investigating this company!!! How many people does this have to happen to before they realize this is an ongoing problem with them.

Capital One Bad Business Practices

This bank is probably the worst of all of them. I called them today to ask if they can kindly remove the $39 fee and I guess I called India because the reps really didn't care about my fee nor could they remove it. They told me that they can't make very customer happy. I told Sophia that it was a really horrible answer to give a customer. We don't want to hear that as a customer.

They have raised my rate to %18 as well which has jacked my minimum payment up to an uncomfortable level. They would not remove my fee for the membership fee. The membership fee goes to the overpaid executives of this bank or so-called bank. This is all part of the Enrons of America. GM is taking a fall for overpaid fat executives and the time has come for the American people to wake up from these organizations that have been taking advantage of the average working man. It's all coming to a head now. The American people need to realize what is happening.

Do not use a credit card unless you really have to. Looks for a bank that is not any worse than the other. They are all in the same business to make extra money to pay their overweight executives driving really expensive sports cars. These people are living off of us, so remember that. They couldn't remove the fee for me to at least make me a little happier. There's is a change in climate in the industry and the customer better beware of these practices. These people do not care about you. They only care about themselves.

Soon, they might smell the coffee and realize that they are not as high and mighty as they think they are. GM, Ford, and Chrysler are finding this out now. Treat the customer with respect, integrity, and show that you appreciate their business. Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more a thing of the past, especially when dealing with these loan sharks.

Customer Service -- NOT!!!

VIRGINIA -- I have had this credit card account before Capital One even owned it (originally held by Signet Bank), so going on 19 years. I've had a late payment 3 times in those 19 years, only due to being out of the country with my husband's Army assignment that caused a delay in mail services, then being sent back to the states to Walter Reed for 2 months for husband's life threatening condition and I had to send a check to a friend at our base in Germany to mail back to Cap One in the States (no pay online back then), and once when I was out of state with family and my husband mailed it in, but forgot to put the check inside the envelope.

I don't use it much. When I do, I usually make payments WAY over the minimum and pay it off as quickly as possible. My card has sat unused for months to a year at a time with Zero balance, only being used in an emergency. They gave me a PLATINUM card several years ago, so obviously I am definitely NOT a risky customer. Only 4 months ago they were sending me repeated offers for me to call in and get my interest lowered or increase my rewards points or other great offers because I'm "such a highly rated, valued customer". But now they want to raise my rate from 7.9% to 15.99% and that will be variable to 12.99% plus the fed rate each month.

I am furious. This is the only account I have in my name, to maintain a credit history outside of my husband's since I am currently a homemaker with no independent income of my own. I don't want to close it as my husband suggests since I could not get another one and certainly not with the credit line of $5,000 that I have built up qualifying with my good credit history over 19 years.

I should not be punished because other people have over-extended themselves and are defaulting on their payments. My letter from them says that the change to my rate will not occur until Jan. 2010. Supposedly there will be a law next year to go into effect to prevent interest increases such as this, but it will take effect after my interest goes up. Crafty, crafty on the part of Capital One.

If there can be investigations into price gouging on gas, I think there should be a Congressional one on credit companies doing this interest rate hiking on customers who have stellar histories with their credit card companies. And even better, write a regulation that credit card companies cannot give credit cards to people who have filed bankruptcy in past 10 years or that draw welfare which the back of my letter from Capital One says that cannot discriminate against them. HELLO if they are bad enough off to qualify for welfare, they don't have the means to pay a credit card!!!

SUFFOLK, NEW YORK -- Yesterday, I received from you something so appalling, that I feel I needed to write to you immediately. I CANNOT believe that IN THIS ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, which are your words, that you would take such pathetic and desperate measures to raise interest rates from 7.99 to 17.99. Having outstanding credit, not missing a payment and paying in full nearly ever time I had a balance, you would stoop so low. So this is how you reward people who pay their debts in the correct fashion, by royally screwing them. I thought you as a financial company were one for the better ones.

After doing my research online I discovered that apparently you are doing this to quite a few people, like myself. After taking bail out money from our government, which by the way was partly MY money, thank you, you in turn screw over the people who are doing the right thing and paying their debts!!! Wherea€™s my interest on the money I loaned you??? You owe me!!!

Even in this ECONOMIC ENVIRONMENT, do you think this is a good idea? You are opening yourselves up to more defaulting accounts and in the process helping to ruin the credit of those who are still fighting to make it. You should be ashamed of yourselves, because when this is all said and done, which in time will be, where do you think you will stand with consumers?

To think, I'€™ve been waiting for a Capital One bank to be finished being built in my neighborhood to withdraw tens of thousands of dollars of my money and open an account with you. Thanks for making the decision for me since that will now NOT be happening. Once again proving how your screwing yourself.

Used to be nice doing business with you. I guess my wife could expect the same royal screwing, when her promo rate with you, which you offered her, expires. Her rate was 9.9 % lowered to 5.99% because you kept sending her "how can we make your account better for you," just 2 short months age. So much for No hassles, what's in your wallet?

What's Going On?

Alright I'm sure everyone is wondering what is going on with their credit cards, their interest rates and all these change in terms so here is the scoop to my understanding. The government is tired of giving out this bailout money and they are telling banks and credit cards "enough is enough, we aren't going to keep bailing you out. Obviously you don't know how to run your company."

As credit cards over the years have been giving out lower and lower interest rate to be competitive they have lowered them so much that in this economic state they aren't making ends meet. So the government also passed a law stating that credit cards aren't going to be able to change a customer's terms. So all the credit cards are raising interest rate right now because they won't be about to do it again.

In the 80's a 14 percent credit rating was about as good as it got with excellent credit. That's going to become a reality again. Now you may not like a higher interest but if the credit card industry is going to keep getting bail out money you as taxpayers are going to be paying for it one way or another. Another law the gov passed was that payments are not going to go towards the lowest interest rates on the card first which means no more great balance transfer deals.

This is why if you have a balance of 5000 dollars on a card at a 14 percent APR and you get a balance transfer check at a 2.99 interest for 5000 dollars you could now with the new law use your check to pay off your 5000 balance at a 2.99 APR. I'm not the best at putting my thoughts through words so if you have any questions just ask.

Erroneous/Bogus Interest Increase
By -

After reading another post about the failure to perform regarding identity theft and fraudulent charges, I decided to share my story about the fraudulent practices of Capitol One. I had a Capitol One bank card for years, more than 10 years. I was never late on a payment...not once. Rarely did I ever charge more than half of my line of credit, as is my policy with all my charge cards. I have a few.

One day I received a letter from Capital One telling me my interest rate was going from 17 percent to 24 or 26 percent. They then informed me that IF I was not late on a payment in a twelve-month period, they would CONSIDER lowering my interest rate to 22 or 24 percent (not positive on which). Imagine my shock! I have not been late with a credit card payment in my life. I do not play games with money.

I called them and said I had never been late in ten years, asked them to look at my account. I asked what the hell were they trying to pull? Raising my interest rate with the carrot dangled if I am not late for one year? I got not satisfactory answer. I was outraged. That is when I got stupid. I cancelled my card.

I believe I had a $6000.00 line of credit. My credit report showed that I had only used about 3000.00. After I cancelled my account, instead of my credit report reflecting that I had a 6000.00 line of credit and had used 3000.00, my credit report reflected my balance as the $3000.00 line of credit and I had used it so I had ZERO available. My card was MAXED OUT. This is not a good thing on your credit report.

Every time I mad a payment, my credit report reflected the new balance as my allowed line of credit and that I was maxed out. It remained that way until I paid it off. I think they acted in bad faith to gouge the American public, raping them with fabricated reasons for raising the interest rate.

Another little game they play is that the statements are generated and held. When they do go out, they reach you with enough time to pay it within 48 hours, or you will be late, allowing them to collect a late fee. (They do not hold the patent on this practice, almost all card companies play this game.) If you want to be sure you never get a late payment on your record, pay your bill before they generate the bill. Good luck.

Capital One: Capital Crooks!

RICHMOND, VIRGINIA -- I received a letter today from Capital One stating that after April 17, 2009 they will raise the variable APR from my current rate (6.99%) to 29.4%! When I called to complain, I got a recording saying that this raise was necessary due to the current economy. Not only do I have very good credit (TransUnion score of 837, MyFico of 760), but I also make payments on this card more often than I need to (at least 2-3 times per month, rather than once) at many times the minimum required payment ($850 payment, so far this month, on a minimum payment of $39).

I haven't made late payments on any bills, or on the only other credit card I ever use (out of 4 which I have). I own my house outright, with no mortgage. Still, none of this matters to Capital One. The only option they give me is to close my account by May 17, 2009. Since this would affect my credit score, I have no choice but to pay off the full balance ($3286) in the next couple of months, in order to avoid the outrageously high APR.

The main reason I use this card as much as I do is because I've been getting cash back on it. In fact, just yesterday I received an email from Capital One saying that I'm such a good customer that they're offering me a second credit card. This is insane! If someone in my position is getting screwed so badly by Capital One, I can't imagine what they must be doing to all the helpless customers who have it so much worse than I do.

Congress should investigate the appalling practices which are being perpetrated on American consumers by Capital One and other banks at the same time that they're taking huge amounts of taxpayer-funded bailouts! What if Capital One is intentionally attempting to make customers defraud, so it can try to get even more TARP money from taxpayers? Frankly, I hope Capital One DOES go under, since that's exactly what it deserves! No more taxpayer bailouts for Capital One!
