NEVER trust LA Fitness

PLANO, TEXAS -- An LA Fitness talked me into giving him my credit card number to "lock down" special rate while I was looking for a fitness center. Gave the number to him and went in the next day to look at the club. The sales person, Jason, whom I gave credit card to was not there. I didn't like the club (LA Fitness, East Plano, TX) and a manager (the LA Fitness front desk referred him to me) came and tried to talk me into join. I confirmed with him that I don't want to join and asked for my credit card number back. He told me he had no access to credit card numbers, but I should not worried about my credit card number since I had never signed any membership agreement.

Well, the truth is, weeks later, I was being charged on my credit card without my authorization. I called many times to LA Fitness E. Plano, TX location and they said it was their mistake and they will take care of it. Nothing happened after the promises. A month later, my credit card was being charged again. I had to put a request dispute from my credit card company. Guess what, LA Fitness mailed me an invoice after the credit card company had contacted them and agreed that LA Fitness charge is a fraud.

Here comes the best part : I called to their collection department and explained. Their response: "once a customer gave out his/her credit card number to LA Fitness, then it meant he/she authorize LA Fitness to charge him/her regardless he/she ever signed membership agreement nor receive membership nor use the facility."

SCARY LA FITNESS - I told them I refused to join the club within 3 days of I gave them my credit card number. I have never signed any membership agreement, never worked out there even once in my life, never received any membership information (no card, no papers, just nothing)- BUT CONSTANTLY receiving the bill harassment from them.

Irresponsible LA Fitness - Called them many times and spoke to many people working there, and most of them promised to take care of the issue and never did. At the end, LA Fitness corporate office would just say to you that no records have been found on "their" system showing you spoke to anyone. - I hope judgment come earlier. In conclusion of LA Fitness- Rude customer service and evil business behavior.

Deceptive Selling Practices

NORTH BRUNSWICK, NEW JERSEY -- My daughter who was 18 at the time was talked into signing up for a $312.00 commitment for the next 12 months. This is for a physical trainer 2 times per week. This was irresponsible for their staff to even offer her these classes since she is a freshman in college and unable to pay for these classes. This was to be a contract between their training company, Body of Change, and her. Now, how did I find out about it? They set the account to be billed to pull from my credit card each month.

Once I discussed this with my daughter it was too late to pull out of the contract. She will not be able to utilize these services, nor does she have the means to pay for them. Has the gym been helpful or has their main office. HECK NO. It is the typical runaround with no one taking responsibility for this situation. This was extremely unethical as was their suggestion to fake a doctors note to get out of the contract. "People do it all of the time", I was told. Well I will not teach my daughter to resolve the complaints by lying and cheating.

All we can hope for is that they step up and do the right thing. Bill me for the training sessions used and void the contract. What can I do?? Tell everyone about this unfortunate circumstance and cancel all 4 of my memberships for this particular gym. Will they care? Probably not, but I will post this information anywhere I can so that the consumer knows to beware of this type of unethical (although, legal) behavior.

Resolution Update 10/21/2007:

Contract was canceled. I have rejoined as a member 9/12/07. I have since dropped 18 lbs, 6 -7 days a week treadmill only. Also utilizing weight watchers for determining what to eat and what not to eat.

CLIFTON, NEW JERSEY -- LA Fitness is one of the worst places ever. I became a member to lose some weight and get in shape but the place is so disgusting there is no fresh air you just want to throw up. You cannot stay in the facility more than 10 minutes. They have lack of air circulation. I couldn't bare that disgusting place more than a month. I wanted to cancel the membership, but no it seems it is impossible. You have to fill out a form and send it via mail.

After waiting two weeks they still didn't cancel my membership and charged me again. When I called the customer service they were so rude. They said they didn't receive my mail yet and they asked me to send it a certified mail. THEY JUST DON'T WANT TO STOP CHARGING YOU. DO NOT REGISTER FOR THAT PLACE!!!

A Company That Treats Their Employees and Members Like Dirt

TAMPA, FLORIDA -- I was an area manager for a major health club chain in Florida (Lifestyle Family Fitness). This year, LA Fitness bought our company. From day one they showed no interest in us, our careers, or our income. I personally took a 60k/year pay cut. Then to add insult to it they require all managers to work this shift...(M-Thur 10am-9pm, Fri 9am-7pm, Sat 9am-1pm). If you think that is bad as any of the trainers, they may have gotten it worse. I watched and listened as they belittle the members and had this (if you don't like it, go somewhere else) attitude. These LAF jerks are inexperienced, arrogant, and pompous. The upper management are a joke and are the laziess uncaring bunch of idiots I've ever seen in this industry. The club looks horrible now (trash, dirty etc) and the atmosphere is so bad you don't even want to work out there. Members have cancelled in drones. Over 1500 cancellations in the last THREE months! Those numbers are for ONE club. The district operations manager is so bad that the employees call her "the black widow" behind her back. This is due to her coming into clubs, not speaking with the employees and firing people when she does. This place is horrible, do not work here and certainly do not buy a membership.

Nice Gym...for Sheep

OK, I did not start the morning ready for a rant, but that changed after spending 30 minutes trying to contact someone with authority at LA Fitness. I'll cut to the chase, LA Fitness appears to have a customer service model that limits your access to management and actively resists customer access to upper management. At LA Fitness, management does not want to hear your complaints or suggestions. This can be very frustrating when there is a clueless person at the front desk and an apathetic manager somewhere in the shadows.

The manager at my gym likes the way he runs things. You can see it in his eyes when you make a suggestion about the facilities. He just does care what you think. That is, unless you are one of his hard-core body builder buddies. Several of us at the gym have asked about possible class schedule modifications, cleaning certain equipment better, and other minor requests for consideration. All we get is a glazed over stare.

Poor Customer Service

POTTSTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA -- Today I went to LA Fitness to get a tour and find out prices. That was it, and I told the man at the front desk that. So he called someone up to give me a tour and while this man was doing that he was talking to fast that I had to have him repeat himself on a couple of occasions. He didn't give me time to take a look at the machines and just pointed to them. This alone pretty much made up my mind that I would not become a member there, because I don't like to feel rushed in making a decision. Then we went to sit down to talk about prices and he kept pushing me to sign up right then and there.

Finally I said that I have this card that has a free trial week, and that just made him mad "Well why didn't you tell me that before all of this, then I wouldn't have taken the time to show you around and let him (a person's name on the card) show you around." I explained to him, that I never spoke to the person whose name was on the card so why would it matter? Then I asked that since it seemed to be a big deal, why couldn't he just give me a free trial instead and he said "Oh no, I won't do that. You are his client." That's when I realized that they are only out to get your money and don't even care whether or not you get fit. I am glad that I am not a member of that gym.

Staff Unprofessional

WOODBRIDGE, VIRGINIA -- First off. If you live in the Woodbridge area you are better off getting a gym membership at the Chinn Aquatics or Dale City Recreational Center. I received my membership at LA Fitness as a gift and is the only reason I'm going there. Today was my second visit to LA Fitness only to be insulted by what appear to be a manager. I'm unsure of his name but when I asked someone they stated that he was a manager. He basically called me a child and was very unprofessional. I would suggest if LA Fitness managers/staff want to have conversations that degrade others should be kept to after hours. Once my membership expires I will not be renewing.

Pushy Sales and DIRTY, DIRTY!

FLORIDA -- Gym is 100% dirty and disorganized! Bathrooms are 100% so filthy. The stalls are gross! I was told by the female Assistant Manager at the Wellington, FL location that the corporate office let go their cleaning staff and now only has a sporadic cleaning crew! Gross, Gross, Gross! The 5lb, 10lb and 15lb size dumbells are never around! With all the members they have you would think they would have a few sets of each weight! The Training Manager is supposed to give you a complimentary training session when you join, BUT its 100% sales pitch, no training involved. PATHETIC! I wish I never joined.

In addition, most occasional members at the Wellington, FL location have no couth when it comes to basic gym etiquette. They don't re-rack weights, and when they do, they rack them onto a machine while someone is using it: DANGEROUS and Stupid (i.e. the leg press)!!! The staff does nothing to encourage the occasional members to proper gym use. LA Fitness Wellington takes your money, pockets it and does not put anything into it. Filthy gym, lazy members, lack of dumbells. Don't Waste Your Money! I'm going to Gold's!

How to Make Flan--Who Cares?
By -

METROPOLITAN DRIVE, CALIFORNIA -- I have had a membership for more than 4 years and I have never had a problem until going to this fitness club in Orange. I asked the manager of this club in the city of Orange on information regarding cancellation because that question never crossed my mind. The manager said after the five minutes (of eating his PBJ sandwich),"Honestly, I have no clue about that, you need to go the front desk." He then pointed to them.

Then I go to the front desk and the lady that scans people in says to me, "what do you need?" I told her that I needed information on cancellation. She then gave me the look of death for interrupting her as she continued on with the fellow coworkers about how she made the flan that they were all stuffing their faces with at the front. She straight up ignored me for 2 minutes and then finally told me to go online and find out myself because she didn't know. I was infuriated.

Worst Experience Ever

ALHAMBRA, CALIFORNIA -- To everyone thinking about joining LA Fitness (Alhambra, California Branch). Just came back from this location after Jason **, Weekend General Manager, refuses to let my guest in for a workout. I was told in numerous occasions that I can bring a guest AT ANYTIME by Victoria (Another worker at this location). Therefore, I was dumbfounded when Mr. ** insists on telling me that I did not read the fine print. Not only was he not apologetic, but he insists to make his point. Can someone remind him that he is working in a service oriented business? It is obvious that his title has gone to his head.

I found Mr. ** to be rude, confrontational and downright nasty. Whoever promoted Mr. ** shows very poor judgment. In fact, having someone so inexperienced for this position shows the lack of foresight which truly reflects the company. No one should accept this type of treatment. I am glad that my membership will end soon. You can bet I will take my business elsewhere. My final word of advice, stay away from LA Fitness. The employees at YMCA or the Spectrum Club are a lot more professional... They actually treat you with respect!
