A township vehicle negligently parked on a hill rolled down the street, across three properties and into my yard destroying my pool cabana. The law exempts local governments from liability - they are only obligated to pay your deductible. Allstate refused to send an adjuster to survey the damage, even though my contractor recommended that I take down the rest of the building as quickly as possible for safety and to avoid more damage to my property.

Two estimates put the structural damage alone at $14,500 and $14,200 - not including $8000 for contents, fencing and landscaping. Allstate, told me that while my DELUXE policy included outbuildings, they didn't know what a cabana was and would consider it a shed valued at $3500 less depreciation - even though they never visited my property and ignored my two estimates.

I finally did what I thought an insurance company was supposed to do. I hired a lawyer and threatened to sue the township for negligence - they are responsible for negligence. The Township settled out of court and I was out $2200 in legal fees, but at least closer to being made whole. The topper came later when Allstate more than doubled my premium and I found out that I was deemed not insurable by two other companies. Never had a claim in 25 years!!!!!

Home Owners Insurance

TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA -- I was using AllState for my auto insurance and when I bought my first house last year I went with AllState for my home owners insurance. A few months later I got got a better rate on my auto insurance from a different company, so I switched. I was also contemplating switching my home owners insurance as I could save money on that too, but I had waited until after the auto renew date, so I figured I'd wait until next year.

Then, the other day I got a letter from my mortgage company requesting proof of home owners insurance. Turns out AllState had cancelled my insurance a couple of months ago without ever contacting me to let me know. My credit is better this year than last and there has been no events that have made me a riskier customer over the last year. The only thing I can think of is that they didn't like it that I cancelled my auto insurance. In any case they can take their "good hands" and shove them up you know where!

Is There Anything I Can Do to Increase My Payoff?
By -

JACKSON, OHIO -- I submitted a claim with my insurance (ALLSTATE) after a break in and burglary in September 2007 and they did not send me an offer until May of 2008, stating all the while that 'it was under investigation' like I was doing something illegal by submitting a claim. Yes my claim was fairly large ($31,000), but it wasn't my fault, that I was burglarized. The offer they gave to me was 51% of the amount of the claimed items that were stolen from me. Items were left off and the price greatly reduced.

They claim a number of reasons, the price for each item (if I don't have a receipt) is based on their price, and depreciation. Also, I requested the sales tax amount be refunded (I had to pay it for the original item and I am going to have to pay it for the replaced item). It was denied. Not only did it take the amount of time it did, I am not going to get the full amount for my items. What Can I do?

HUDSON, OHIO -- I do not advise insuring with this company. They are not reliable when you have a claim. The claims representatives conduct themselves as suspicious of any claim you make. You can tell in their tone on the telephone. I got the impression they did not trust me from the first call. Steer clear.

CENTER MORICHES, NEW YORK -- Went to court years ago when they increased my coverage against my wishes and agreed in court to not do it again. Well I let it ride a couple of years but complained this year. They won't honor their court agreement so just filed another action against them.

Allstate Is The Worst!!!

PALMDALE, CALIFORNIA -- Allstate is the worst carrier. They deny coverage then drop you. Then when you get an attorney they pay their attorneys to keep sending you endless interrogatories and hassling you to get out of paying. Beware. You are in evil hands with Allstate. If they only paid as much to cover rightful claims as they do on their commercials pretending they do... Giving them even a one star is too much. I wish there was an option of a negative five stars.

Severe Snow Damage

I was denied a claim via Allstate because THEY stated my policy did NOT specifically state SNOW damage in the policy. I am livid to say the least. Please, can you help me with this outrageous unethical company?
