False Advertising Or Scam
By -

Big Lots uses false and deceptive advertising practice. Too many times I have gone to Big Lots to purchase something that they advertised only to be told that they do not have it. In some cases I was told that they received only 1 or 2 of something which is probably to allow them to say it is sold out.

It is a despicable policy (I am convinced this is company policy) that tries to trick people to come into their store for something that does not exist with the idea that while they are there, they will buy some other things. I for one, refuse to spend a single cent in a store that does this to its customers and refuse to buy anything there if they do not have what I went to buy from their advertisement.

The return policy is located in very conspicious places for a reason. The fact that you may get a refund on an item that, by your own admission, was a gift(that means you did not pay for it)is left to discretion of the manager on duty. Would a jeweler give you a refund on a diamond that you didn't buy from them? Yes we are comparing apples to oranges but the principal is the SAME no matter what item is involved. You also need to understand that there are people that need their retail jobs and have the responsibility to uphold those policies. I have been a retailer for over 20 years and I want to hear from someone who is in the same league as me.

Poor Customer Service
By -

BEND, OREGON -- Paid for a Simmons leather rocker recliner on December 23, 2010 on the assurance of the department manager that it would be in-stock on January 7, 2011. Got a call on January 4, 2011 notifying me that the order was delayed but it would be here on January 13, 2011 - wrong again. Still no chair and no chair in sight - the store manager is a jerk and has NO empathy for my loss, has made no attempt to provide me with any satisfaction or alternate product. While Simmons may be the reason the chair isn't being delivered, it is Big Lots responsibility to get my purchase to me in a timely manner.

GREAT customer service at Scottsdale/Tempe Big Lots

SCOTTSDALE/TEMPE, ARIZONA -- I received GREAT customer service at the Big Lots in Scottsdale/Tempe, AZ on Rural Road. Not only did they go above and beyond to help me find a Christmas tree, but they also gave me the tree on display because it was the last one and it was the EXACT tree I wanted.

When they didn't have a box for that tree, they pulled out the tree in another box and gave me that box! I was also very happy when the young gentleman helping me offered to help me out to my car since I was alone and was obviously not strong enough to carry the tree, tree skirt, and ornaments I was purchasing. I was very pleased with the customer service I received and will DEFINITELY be going back to this Big Lots location!

No Exchanges or Store Credit Without Receipt - Even if It Was a Gift???
By -

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- My daughter was given a Polaroid MP3/video player (Valued at 45.00). Went to the store in Houston, Texas (on Jones and FM 1960). Store is refusing to give an instore credit card or even an exchange without a receipt. We have no receipt, it was a gift. Product is still in the original package and was not opened at all. My husband called the 1-800 number and was told they do not exchange/give instore credit without a receipt. This is very back customer service. We should at least be able to exchange the product for something of equal value!!! I plan to write a complaint to the company soon with details of this complaint.

I'm currently working at Big Lots. All you guys do is complain. Have you ever think of how we (employees) actually feels? We're trying our best to provide a good service but ended up getting yelled at by rude customers. I'm 18 and this is my first job. Imagine customers saying bad stuff about you and you can't do anything about it. I was traumatized. I have a different personality. I've never been exposed to different people since this is my first job.

At school, I was the quiet kid who always do my work and complete my task as I was told. Working my butt off and dealing with customers is something new. I just want you to know guys that we're only following instructions. We're getting minimum wage and we're doing the best that we can to help you guys out. Please help us back too. Big Lots isn't BAD!

Horrible Off-Market Experience
By -

I have avoided this store ever since a few bad local experiences years back. No surprise, they have only one store left in my area... And a lousy 30-day return policy. Well, during the Memorial weekend in Shipshewana, my friend decided we would stop just to see if they actually carried anything for computers. I was a good sport. They actually did carry SOME off-market electronics, in the front case, including notebook cooling fans, and because it was priced under $16, I decided to give it a shot.

I got home and plugged it in. Great, it actually WORKS. For about one week. Then, curiously some time later, though you could hear it running, my laptop was starting to warm again. That didn't make sense. A laptop fan is supposed keep your PC temp level when your laptop is used for extended periods (yes laptops come with built in fans, but are limited in their ability). Needless to add, I ended up going to Office Max to purchase a market-brand cooling fan, and ditched the Big Lots one. It is junk, and I should have known better. AND, a lousy 30-day return policy, at that. I give the chain a D+.

Hello, I decided to look up what people are saying about Big Lots. And since I am employed by B Lots I thought I should give some feedback on some peoples reviews. First- return policy- on paper it states - in my own words that all merchandise can be returned within 30 days with receipt as long as the merchandise is in original condition and has original box.

Through personal experience I have seen this policy broken for the benefit of the customer. I have seen people come back after hauling off a recliner and somehow dropped it during transport--and we have exchanged it or them. Also, return policy without a receipt - we require a receipt to identify where the product came from, make sure the purchase is within 30 days and to make sure the customer purchased the product in the first place.

Furniture-- Big Lots is the biggest seller of Serta. They are new not refurbished. And basically I believe Big Lots prices are the cheapest in my town. Many people say Sam's is way cheaper.. I simply tell them first to buy from Sam's, or bring me a ad with a price from them. When all is said and done I'm usually loading up a mattress in a truck for someone.

Big Lots Bedding

LANSING, MICHIGAN -- Checked and compared prices and quality of mattress and box springs/foundation in the East Lansing and Lansing Michigan areas. Visited Big Lots and was pleasantly the surprised. They had a Serta Arrington twin size which I immediately purchased. Had been doing research for a couple of weeks. Other stores had off-brand products, too high, or tried the "bait and switch" routine. The cashier went in the back and got the bedding set and even waited while I went to look for sheets for my mattress set. Very pleasant and even loaded the items in my car. I have visited this particular store on numerous occasions and they definitely know how to treat a customer.

False Advertising

BEDFORD PARK, ILLINOIS -- On Sunday, July 4, 2010, at 11:00 AM, we went to Big Lots to purchase the Slick Digital Camcorder which was $25 and was on a 2-day only special which was on Sunday, July 4th to Monday, July 5th. When we reached the store, we only saw the $50+ camcorders such as the JVC. We went to talk to one of the store employees, and said that they were "sold out".

We had a hard time believing this was true since there were MANY times they said the same thing over and over. Much of these products shown on the ads always seem "sold out" before we get there. We went more than four times to the store for said camera with prices varying. On one such occasion, on 2010's Father's day, the same camera was on the same price of $25, again the camera was apparently "sold out" and we got up real early. To our conclusion, we suspect Big Lots of False Advertising to get people to come to their store.
