Gateway & Acer Products Are Junk And They Do Not Care About You
By -

Just to add to this site is my tale of purchasing not One but TWO Gateway MX8711 laptops just last year, Feb of 2007 for one of my clients. This was right when Vista (gulp) was launched. Bought from Office Depot because really seemed to be a great deal features vs. price thing. Boy, was I wrong. Now BOTH systems, immediately after the 1 year warranty has expired of course, are doing strange things. Most notably, one of them does not run at all for any length of time. I'm a PC Tech and Consultant and have done everything I can. I have also taken to a laptop "Specialist" who doesn't know what it can be.

So, I sent an email yesterday (Monday, July 28, 2008) to all the powers that be at ACER (owners of Gateway now) thinking they might actually Care and DO something. NO. What I did receive, this morning, was a call from some underling giving me the runaround. She tried everything she could to put the blame on the client, tried to say that repairs were done before warranty was expired, etc. That was not at all the case.

First of all, she did not READ the email I sent and she DID NOT listen to me when SHE called me. Her name is Monica and stated that she was not in the position to do anything EXCEPT offer a $100 discount towards the Universal starting price of $225 for Out-Of-Warranty repair charges. She refused to send that in email to me for confirmation and also stated that the offer was ONLY good for right then and there. I stated that I would have to check with my client and get back to her.

Before I could do that, she called back and stated that she could not get approval for the $100 and that it would have to be only $50!! They didn't even respect their customer enough (who bought TWO, TWO, TWO OF THEIR LAPTOPS!!) to have someone call back that even had some kind of authority to do something about the situation. Do you believe it? Well, I know you do. It's laughable and so insulting. They put out inferior products, play shell games with corporations and expect us all to just sit here and take it. I think NOT.

Class Action?

PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- I purchased a Gateway M675X notebook in early November 2004 for approximately $2,500. I received a box with just a laptop, no warranty papers, no user manuals, no software, no invoice. I noticed that the LCD screen had several broken pixels and my soundcard did not function properly. I called Gateway's (horrible) customer service dept. and they assured me they would send me a new chassis. I simply had to swap my drives and send the defective one back in the box using shipping labels they sent me.

About mid-December, I still hadn't received my replacement so I called them back and they told me it was on back order and did not know when they could ship it to me. I then demanded they let me return it for a full refund. They told me there was going to be a 15% restock fee and it was like pulling teeth to get them to remove this fee, but they finally agreed to a full refund and that they would send me the shipping labels for this return. I didn't hear from them again until yesterday, Jan 28th 2005 when they sent me an invoice stating they had charged another $300 to my credit card for not returning the defective notebook in a timely manner!! THE NERVE!!

So anyway I called again this morning and they said there was no refund agreement on their records and that my replacement chassis is still on back order. They said they may be able to get my replacement by mid-Feb 2005. I have been unable to reach ANYBODY outside of customer service, was told that corporate offices and the Gateway factory only communicates internally with other company departments, and that no external contact was possible. No e-mail adds, no phone #'s. So basically you are stuck dealing with a low level CSR.

I have been lied to, hung up on and run in circles now for 3 months with no resolution in sight. 3 months with a defective computer under a warranty that they don't seem to be interested in honoring. And after seeing this site and all the recent problems all of you have been through with this company, I was thinking there may be grounds for a class-action lawsuit against Gateway for fraudulent business practices.

There are more than enough people here to make Gateway finally hear us loud and clear. As of Mon Jan 31 2005, if I haven't had my problem resolved I will be seeking legal action, and if others feel like I do, then a class-action suit would definitely be better than you and me doing this alone. Please feel free to mail me directly to discuss this matter further.

Single Worst Customer Service I have ever received.

I returned my computer under warranty in order to have the problem that thousands of other users (according to Google) fixed. (I suggest you Google " Gateway computer will not boot" before buying.) I was told that it "had major induced trauma" and that I had 12 hours to call back to give them 200$ to fix it, or it would be shipped back, not repaired.

I did, thinking it would be cheaper to get robbed of 200$ for a fictional trauma, then buy a new computer. Apparently, it only takes 6 hours to fix a " major induced trauma" AND begin the shipping. When I called back to have the address changed, so someone would be there to sign for it, " it had already been shipped." Tricky. When I pleaded for them to call FedEx and re route, I was told that Gateway's policy was that they will not pay the 11$ FedEx charged.

I will not only never buy another Gateway product, I will go out of my way to make sure my friends, family, and strangers never buy another product from them. If you are looking for someone polite, friendly and informed, I suggest you avoid **. Call either one of these people immediately if you would like to be chuckled at while they stand behind Gateway's Policies.

Won't turn on

I purchased this last Christmas. All of a sudden it wouldn't power up after only 11 months! I tried to search the internet for help... nothing. I tried the customer service number and all I got was a recording. My husband lost his job 2 years ago. When he finally got a job... this was our Christmas gift to one another but now... worthless. We don't have money to fix this and we shouldn't have to fix this after this short amount of time. I will never buy a Gateway anything again. It has been a complete waste of time and money. I advise everyone to steer clear of Gateway products.

Warning, Don't Buy From Gateway!!!

I purchased a Gateway computer on 4/19/2010. Just recently the hard drive went down and would not boot. I took it back to Best Buy to see what they could do. They sent it off to be repaired and told me I would have to call Gateway and get a recovery disk, as they could not do that, to get the computer back to the way I bought it.

OK, fine, no problem, but when I called they told me the software warranty was only for 90 days and I would have to purchase the disk from them even though the hardware is warranted for 1 year, and that is what caused the problem to begin with. It was the rudest customer service department that I have ever dealt with, tech support just told me to go to the website and hung up on me.

I looked up the terms of the warranty and under the hardware section it states, and I quote exactly, "The scope of technical support consists of helping you diagnose and resolve problems with defects in Products covered by this Agreement, and, for PC Products, REINSTALLING THE FACTORY-INSTALLED OPERATING SYSTEM AND (SOFTWARE) to restore it to the original factory configuration". I kept mailing them back stating this and they kept responding with there is nothing they can do.

It was a hardware problem that occurred and they don't care, just saying that it's past 90 days and I'm brushed off by them every time. I highly recommend whoever reads this that they look elsewhere for a computer. DO NOT USE GATEWAY!!! Worst customer service ever! Will not stand by a warranty that it states in their terms of the warranty that they warrant. Absolute joke for a customer service department

Poor customer Service

I purchased a Gateway laptop in Jan 08 and started having trouble with it six months later. Called customer service because I could not get it to turn on, or even get a charge. I Wanted to send it in to them to have it fixed but the customer service representative wanted to do some trouble shooting first. It turned back on and started working again but few months later it started doing the same thing. Now its 5 months out of warranty and they will not help me. Its doing the thing, same problem that I called them for when it was under warranty. Seems like Gateways customer service team try's to slide you buy until your warranty is up so you have to pay them more money. Pretty bad customer service.

Do Not Buy A Gateway Computer!!!

I bought a Gateway Notebook from Gateway 2 years ago with a 4-year warranty. Recently, one of the hinges that connects the top of the notebook to the bottom of the notebook broke. I called Gateway and was told they had sold my warranty to MPC. I contacted MPC and learned they are now bankrupt and will not service my computer.

I called Gateway again and was given a huge run-around. Gateway has treated me terribly regarding this incident. I was told they definitely would not take care of my computer. When I asked to speak to a manager they informed me there was no manager to speak to. When I asked for the name of the representative I was speaking to, he told me he was not allowed to give out names. Not only did I pay Gateway money for a 4-year warranty, but they also received money from MPC for my warranty. They were paid twice for a warranty and will NOT stand behind their product. DO NOT BUY GATEWAY!!!

Do Not Buy A Gateway

Last weekend I purchased two Gateway Computers. Since that time I've had to contact technical support and Gateway Corporate Headquarters several times. The machines I purchased are JUNK. They are less than a week old and already in need of service. I asked Gateway to exchange the computer, but they refuse and actually told me I should have researched the computer and the warranty before I bought it. I cannot agree more. This is my fault for failing to do due diligence as a consumer. Both computers have trouble connecting to the internet, both are slow because they are running Windows Vista OS which requires 1Gig of ram.

Gateway only installed 512 MB of ram. This should be illegal. Also, one of the computer's cd/dvd rom drive has never worked. This is after Gateway mailed me a new drive to replace the one the unit came with. Their tech support is laughable. They know nothing and keep you on the phone for hours asking you to do the same steps over and over again, when they clearly are not resolving the problem.

All of this on your dime, mind you, because there is no toll free support for non-business customers. Calling corporate is a waste of time. They, shockingly, know or care even less about the customer than the tech support people. Whatever you do not buy a Gateway Computer.

This company does not provide a quality product to the consumer and refuses to take any steps to make the problem right. I've read that they are being assumed by ACER computers at some point. Don't know if it's true or not, but do your homework before you buy.

Horrible Gateway Experience, 10/04
By -

I purchased a $1,500 Gateway laptop less than one year ago and now the HD already has bad sectors and I have to get it completely replaced. This after only light personal usage! Unbelievable. But the WORST part is I have had the ** time with their customer service and tech support. These people are dumb. I don't know a d*mn thing about computers, but it seems they are reading Windows for Dummies Volume 1 as they feed me generic answers! THEN, every time I log back on to the support chat, I get a new person who I have to start completely over with!!!
The icing on the cake is that I'll have to pay for the shipping.

I've asked multiple times for their CEO's email, but am ignored. I even asked for upper-level management to address my concerns, but to no avail. It seems they really don't care if a customer is unhappy. That's why their stock is going to be trading in the OTC range soon. Does anyone on this board have the CEO's email? Please email me at ** with it, thanks!

My husband and child gave me Gateway for mother's day present. Just because of mother's day present, I still survive to keep it. No matter since the day I opened the package and start using it already have so many issue and trouble. I wanted to return, have to pay open package fee at $70. Too much! I have been trying to fix in many ways, but remain so slow even still so much space on it. With any virus and malware software still get attacked. Keyboard keep jumping, strange noise when log off/on, cursor freeze most of time and so on and so on and finally just a black screen.

Fixing it, spend another $400 and in result remain worst of the worst! They just don't provide any freaking support, nothing! I spent too much money, energy and time already for this crap! Just for a respect I keep it on my desk or else in the garbage bin! One lesson and that's it! Do not walk but RUN!!!
