5 Day Old Laptop and It's Dead, Taking It Back for Another Brand

LAWRENCEBURG, INDIANA -- I have never had a laptop and was very excited to get my new Gateway. Five days after purchasing it the screen froze up with only a black screen and the white arrow. I called a tech support number first and the only way they could help was to sell me an $99 tech support package. Then I called another number and I was told to take off the battery and then put it back on and tap f2, again nothing but an offer for me to ship it back. So I am taking it back for a different manufacturer!

TEMPLE, TEXAS -- I bought a BRAND new GATEWAY notebook on 11/30/2013 for about $340.00 @ a Wal-Mart (who is my next complaint) and bought their service plan for more money bringing the total up to $400.00. I had the computer one month & the screen froze up. Couldn't fix it. Called support & blah blah blah. I was told at purchase time with warranty that if I had problems they would fix or give me a brand new one... so one month later it's broken.

I have to pay the $21 shipping to send it to them, they said it had a 'defective hard drive' and sent it back w/ a new one and all done. I told them it was a lemon. About 2 days later it broke again (lost Internet connection). Had to FIGHT to get them to even take it back, never mind get the replacement I was promised. They paid for shipping. Got it back on 2/27... broke again on 3/2... filed with the BBB. Just can't play their games any more.

Problems Connecting Peripherals/Bad Customer Service

I regret having bought this laptop. I have had problems connecting it to my printer (it doesn't even recognize that it is connected) and connecting the laptop to my external monitor with an HDMI cable and getting a full-screen image. I have no problems connecting with the three older laptops I own -- a Dell, a Toshiba, and an HP -- so I'm confident it is the Gateway laptop. Your tech support was unable to solve the monitor issue and told me my only recourse on my three-month-still-under-warranty computer is to PAY for tech support.

The lack of competency in dealing with my monitor issue makes me doubt you'll be able to fix the printer issue unless I pay for tech support. Sad. I will rely on googling the problems to find solutions; it's likely I'll have more success. I wish I could get my money back on this laptop and will tell anyone who asks (or many who don't) that they shouldn't buy a Gateway computer.

Terrible Support

After purchasing a new Gateway NV79 computer, I noticed that the built in camera was not working. I called Gateway and they did not answer the call. I found their online support and described the problem. Their tech. said I had to reformat the hard drive and reinstall the camera driver. I told him I did not want to reformat the hard drive but he insisted that this was the only way to fix this problem. I followed his instructions and did a reformat of the hard drive. All files were lost. Including photos of family members who had passed away. All the programs that came with the program also were gone. The camera still did not work.

I could not get any more help from Gateway so I took the camera to a computer repair center. After two days and $150 dollars they were able to get the computer to work again. Still no programs like word processor, etc. that originally came on the computer were there. By the way, the computer store was unable to get the built in camera to work. They said it was a problem with Gateway's camera driver. I now own a $700 dollar Gateway laptop that is good for playing solitaire or a boat anchor. This all happened in the first couple of weeks of owning the computer. My recommendations... DO NOT BUY GATEWAY!!! No support.

Gateway Laptop A Big, Expensive, Disappointment. Most Expensive Cheap Computer In Universe!

PORTLAND, OREGON -- This laptop purchased from Best Buy has been a total money pit! Purchased 2.5 years ago, it has needed a new hard drive, new cd disk drawer, new software for the new hard drive and now the best part... After Best Buy charged $89.00 to send it to the Best Buy mothership to evaluate why it would not charge, they called me to say it was ready for pickup. When I stopped in today to pick up the laptop I was told that "It's Toast" (Professional language no?) "The part has been discontinued." WHAT? "Or, if it hasn't been discontinued, Best Buy can't get it anymore. You can contact Gateway directly." Are you kidding me??

It cost $89 to find out that you can't help me on a computer you sold me? Sooooo, the saga continues, I came home, pulled up Gateway on my home computer only to learn that there is a fee to inquire or get assistance. $99 for 15 minutes. I refuse to give Gateway or Best Buy another penny. I'd rather donate it to Free Geek.

5-year-old Gateway laptop still running great

I bought my Gateway on a whim nearly 5 years ago - one of the first tablet PCs out. It has worked wonderfully ever since, without a hitch, while my husband has nearly killed a Dell and I had another Dell blow up at work in half that time. Haven't had much experience with customer service other than when my dog jumped up and knocked the 'B' key off - can't get a replacement spring for just the key, but the support people were nice about it - though response time was admittedly very slow. I've learned to type without it...

I love my Gateway and was thinking when it dies I'd get another. I just ordered a replacement battery - after 4 years of regular use, the battery finally has given up on holding a charge, which is to be expected. I've thought about jumping ship to a Mac, mainly because I am SICK of Windows hassles, idiotic MS Word, etc. (but that isn't Gateway's fault!), but feel rather loyal to this trusty machine. I did't realize that Acer now owns Gateway. Have they changed how and where they manufacture them?

Cheap, Unreliable and Not Worth the low ticket price

The MFg date on the back of my GATEWAY states July 31, 2008. Today is May 5, 2010 and my computers hard drive is dead. Actually it's my mom's computer (I have an APPLE) and she was ripped off! A little over a year and a half and the computer is done? This is ridiculous! All this talk about being a green consumer and saving our landfills and yet technology companies continue to make garbage, throw-away products.

Sure they cost under $1000 but in the long haul buying a new computer every year and a half will surely add up to much more than you bargained for. And customer support? Unheard of from Gateway. She called some outsourced service provider and after spending another $150 was told they could not fix it! Gateway computers are a piece of junk! Do not buy one no matter how inexpensive Best Buy, Walmart, Costco or any of those other cheap, big box stores are selling them for. Waste of Money!!

TEXAS -- DO NOT BUY A GATEWAY COMPUTER!!!!!! The only thing worse than their computer is their customer service. Check their website: 92 out of 98 reviews were from highly irate customers, fuming over the lack of performance of their computer and no customer/technical assistance. We all say the same thing: they sell you a piece of crap and will not back it up. It is hard to get someone on the phone, and when or if you do, it is always some freaking Indian who really doesn't give a damn. This was the worst purchase I ever made in my life.

Purchased unit approx 3 months ago. The hard drive failed. Had problem diagnosed by a technician. I went to the store where I purchased unit and was told to get a hold of Gateway on line which I did. After spending weeks of frustration communicating with the idiots they call technicians, they finally said that the problem was my hard drive. I would answer questions, every e-mail was a different tech with the same questions I had already answered. They established that unit was under warranty. I gave them my home # and info for unit to be repaired but it never happened. They spent more energy going around in circles. I will never buy another Gateway product or recommend Gateway to anyone. Your service sucks. **

Gateway Computers

I purchased a Gateway laptop model 7848u this year. I used it three months and it crashed. They are no longer an American company, but located in India. I have complained for weeks, even to 3 supervisors, but they do nothing except erase everything from my computer. I purchased it from HSN, they also do nothing... I found out through research with computer geeks and checking into the inner parts of the computer that used contaminated parts were used in making this new computer. These used contaminated parts have a virus that cannot be removed.

So now I have a laptop computer that has been used for 3 months and it has crashed. Do not, yes, do not purchased from qvc or HSN any Gateway computer... They will not guarantee it if your product is over 30 days. Oh, Gateway is owned by Acer a product of India. The people from India think we are stupid and are taking Advantage of us by selling their products here in the USA. Yes, it is still under warranty. They won't repair it and they will not refund my money.
