They Closed My Account for No Reason! Stay Away!! Horrible Bank!
By -

STAY AWAY FROM KEYBANK!!! I opened up a Keybank account over a month ago, due to a good promo that they were running. Out of nowhere, my debit card wasn't working so I decided to give them a call. They told me that my and my wife's account is being closed by the "fraud department". After a few days of trying to get through to them, I spoke to the women who actually closed my account, her name was "Sara". She said "Keybank has a right to close my account without providing any reason or notice". She was extremely rude and didn't want to give me any info.

When I called again she said she doesn't feel conformable talking to me as I sound like a different person. Additionally they can't send me a check for my account balance, and that I have to go down to the nearest Keybank branch which is 3 and a half hours away from me. I opened this account online since there was no branch near me. I find this absolutely ridiculous. All I did was open an account and I deposited my money in there - no fraud whatsoever as I have never done anything like that.

I used so many banks and no has ever done this to me. I can't even check my account balance online as they cancelled it without notice. I've never experienced dealing with someone this ruthless. I don't plan on dealing with Keybank again but now I basically don't know what to do as I can't travel 3-4 hours to the bank.

Loan

ANYWHERE IN THE US, IDAHO -- I wish I had read these reviews BEFORE I decided to borrow money from Key. They are horrible. They do not want to work with you if you have trouble and are as rude and uncaring. As I am reading about in these reviews, I had 3 loans. One with Bank of America, one with Wells Fargo, and one with Key. Bank of America and Wells Fargo were difficult but reasonable. Key Bank is impossible. I was told (by them) it is because they are small and don't have all the resources as the other two banks, so can't handle problems. WOW, is that for sure. I wish I had known about this. Hopefully this will save you some grief. Do your borrowing at a different bank!

Key Bank Service Charges Customers Even As They Close Accounts!
By -

CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OHIO -- My son, a college kid, lived in the Coventry area last year and opened an account at this Key Bank because of its convenient location. This year, he found an apartment closer to campus. On August 18, 2010 he went to close his account, which had a balance of $9,000. The teller told him that if he wanted a check for the closing balance, he would have to pay a $6.00 fee.

REALLY!? SERIOUSLY!? This is just one example of Key Bank's lack of customer service and last ditch effort to service charge a customer even as they walk out the door. My son elected to take his $9,000 in cash. Next day, he opened an account at PNC Bank and explained why he was carrying $9,000 in cash. He was told that PNC will close an account upon request and issue a check - No Charge.

Check 21
By -

Someone recently posted that they were told checks clear in one day. Well since Check 21 went into effect that is no longer the case in many situations. Digital images are taken of checks and funds deducted sooner than later.

The Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act (or Check 21 Act) is a United States federal law, Pub. L. 108-100, enacted into law October 28, 2003 by the 108th Congress. It took effect one year later, on October 28, 2004. The law allows the recipient of the original paper check to create a digital version of the original check called a "substitute check," thereby eliminating the need for further handling of the physical document.

Consumers are most likely to see the effects of this act when they notice that certain checks (or image of) are no longer being returned to them with their monthly statement even though other checks are still being returned. Another side effect of the law is that it is now legal for anyone to use a computer scanner to capture images of checks and deposit them electronically, a process known as remote deposit.

Bank Arrogance/Incompetence???
By -

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS -- I have written two letters to Key Bank regarding an offer of settlement for an outstanding Student Loan, the bank's Education Resources Division. The letters were sent via fax and mail and I have evidence that the letters were received however after nearly two months no reply has been received in any form to either letter despite a specific request for response. I can only attribute this failure and performance to either gross arrogance or total incompetence on the part of the bank employees.

If this reflects the view Key Bank wants the public to have of their bank then I would offer a word of caution to those considering Key Bank for their banking needs. For me I will not consider Key Bank for any future banking needs, business or personal, arrogance or incompetent performance is unacceptable.

Key Bank Deceptive Online Balance
By -

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- Friday I deposited a check into my nearest ATM. Much to my surprise, my online account indicated on Saturday, all funds available, nothing pending. This morning, Monday, I am overdrawn and they've put a "hold" on the corporate/local check I deposited on Friday. They tell me I should've been more aware that they can "hold" a check at any time. They said Saturday is not a business day... (They also said that the ATM into which I deposited the check is not accessible to them, my home branch.)

I'm not so concerned about the "hold" as I am the 9 or 10 overdraft fees that have accumulated. My online statement did not indicate anything as being held or pending, it indicated in no uncertain terms that all the monies deposited had become available. The check deposited (on Friday) was from a major nationally known corporation with a local CLEVELAND OHIO bank and I just figured that's why the funds had become immediately available. At this point, the branch manager has said we should wait and see what the overdraft fees add up to and she will call me tomorrow sometime to tell me what I owe... And I shouldn't use the account until all of this is cleared up.

Last night the three overdraft fees that had registered online were reversed. The hold on the check lifted. This morning, my online statement has 11 more "Tier 2 Overdraft Service Charges" totaling $429. I've left a message with the manager's assistant. Just this minute they called back. Apparently the manager has to consult with someone higher up and she will call me back tomorrow? Has anyone had this happen? I can't believe this.

Resolution Update 03/20/2010:

Overdraft fees were refunded.

Customer Service at Key Bank
By -

ANCHORAGE, ALASKA -- I am a customer of Key Bank in Alaska for almost 10 years. I moved all my personal and business accounts from National Bank of Alaska after it was sold to Wells Fargo. At that time CUSTOMER SERVICE as the most attractive part of Key Bank services. Over the years Key Bank have keep it in high standards. Unfortunately, 2-2.5 years ago we began to notice signs of deterioration of CUSTOMER SERVICE at Key Bank. Today, it is in very low point and I am planning to close all accounts with Key Bank and I am looking for new $ home for my business in Anchorage Alaska.

Key Bank Will Not Even Answer Me
By -

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- First, they posted payments as being late. So, I found another business using the Cleveland Post Office who would help me document. I mailed to both at the same time. Key Bank always claimed to receive later than the other post office box. I guess what I read about them here and elsewhere may be true. Then, there are old high-interest boat loans. One would think that they would like to refinance versus doing a repossession. Wrong. They will not even answer related letters and e-mails. Please research well before doing business with Key Bank. You will probably discover that, per many, they are not wonderful.

Key Bank Continues Ripping Off Consumers
By -

VANCOUVER, WASHINGTON -- Yesterday was my first experience with Key Bank and it will be my last. My wife was given a check drawn on a Key Bank business account and we felt it a good idea to cash it at Key Bank to avoid any wait our bank may place on it and to have the cash on hand. We were shocked to be told by the teller that since we did not bank with Key Bank, there was a $5.00 charge to cash a check from their bank! She told us it was standard at all banks, which isn't so as I have been cashing checks drawn on other banks for years at no charge!

To top that off, when I asked for a receipt for the transaction, I was told they were unable to print any, but would try to hand write one! What bank doesn't give receipts for any transactions? With all the troubles the banking industry is experiencing, you would think they would want to attract new customers, not drive them away. Rest assured Key Bank will not be getting any more of my business.

Key Bank and Their Abusive Behavior
By -

13126, NEW YORK -- I have noticed a considerable amount of unwarranted overdraft charges so I asked to speak to a supervisor to go over these concerns. When asked to explain these overdraft charges he got very rude and began to patronize me by saying it was a big conspiracy and Key Bank was out to get me. I then told him "there were many more like me out there that your company has taken advantage of." I asked his name and he refused to tell me. I was astounded to say the least that they would even hire a so called supervisor and allow them to speak to their customers in such a way.

I then called back to ask what the supervisors name was and even then they had no answers for me and that at any given time they have 9-10 supervisors at once. When asked to speak to someone over their supervisors they too gave me the runaround saying they did not know how to get a hold of them. I am confused as to how you can be employed anywhere and not know your boss' name.
