I'll Only Exercise With Planet Fitness Running The Other Way!

DEER PARK, TEXAS -- Found out the hard way how they treat their loyal customers, once you have to move. After moving to the other side of town, I found out they make it as difficult as possible for anyone to cancel. But all you really need to see is their terrible rating on consumeraffairs.com/health_clubs/planet_fitness.html and search "planet fitness complaints" to see there are many. As for the few good reviews, read 'em closely and you can decide if they were written by real customers.

These guys run a well planned membership cancellation scam, forcing people to go through difficult and inconvenient procedures to cancel their service, solely for the purpose of enriching themselves off of persons who've discontinued their service. Continuing to collect money for many months after members have moved away and discontinued use of their gym. The "easy to subscribe, hard to cancel" business con is well known, but has outlived its usefulness among respectable businesses. Spoke with Austin there who gave me the cancellation runaround, then passed me on to the assistant manager. I was told by staff that was Casey and that the general manager (who I did not get to speak with but must know what's going on) is Adrian.

Won't Reimburse Annual Fee After I Cancelled Membership

STONE MOUNTAIN, GEORGIA -- I hadn't been in over 8 months to the gym as my schedule wasn't giving me an opportunity to get in. I found a 5 minute slot when I could go in to cancel (since you have to do it in person) and it turned out to be the day after they apparently charged me an annual renewal fee (which I wasn't notified in any way that it would be getting charged to me). I accepted the loss of months of membership charges ($15/month for cancel anytime for a total of $150 in essentially donations to their business since I wasn't using the gyms at all), but was told that they wouldn't reimburse me the annual fee. I don't recommend joining unless you are certain you are going to be able to handle fees with being noticed and know you can find the time to go in to cancel should you choose.

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA -- At first, my experience at the N. Sardis Road, Charlotte, NC fitness center was good. Then they changed staff and began implementing strict new rules about scanning in as one enters. One used to be able to scan their own card if the staff was occupied or undermanned. No longer. Now one has to wait until a staff member is available to scan them in. No thank you! Found a fantastic fitness center only 1/2 mile away that issues key cards to members that allows them to scan themselves in 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, 365 days per year, whether there is staff present or not. Absolutely fantastic.
Good bye Planet Fitness!
Reason of review: Poor customer service.
Preferred solution: Allow members to scan themselves in!.

IRONDEQUOIT, NEW YORK -- I went in today to the IRONDEQUOIT NY, Planet Fitness to get my annual fee of 39$ refunded. I stopped using the gym -6 mos ago as I moved from the general area. I tried to cancel my membership before then but was told I had to show up in person and cancel with the manager. Manager does not work weekends. So it was very hard for me to get there.

I was charged the 39 two days ago. I only wanted that fee back not the 60$ in monthly charges I had previously lost. The manager refused to cooperate. I will now dispute the charge with my bank and place many many negative reviews about them online. Bad Karma - Planet Fitness you cannot get away with ripping off people. Should have done the right thing.

Unethical Business Maneuvers to Get Your Money

PORT CHARLOTTE, FLORIDA -- A Planet Fitness 'Thumb Down'. This company does not care about their customers' happiness but more about their money. I was told upon signing up that there was no cancellation fee, so I signed up, four months later I called to cancel and they told me that I had to come in, so I went in and then was informed there was a cancellation fee. At that point I was upset that I was misinformed by a staff member, but just decided to wait the rest of the membership out. So now it is the month of July and time for me to cancel without having to pay the fee, and noticed on my bank statement a $40.00 annual fee renewal, in addition to the $20.00 monthly fee for a total of $60.00.

I called management and corporate to discuss the situation and mentioned a courtesy call, text or an email would have been nice before charging a $40.00 renewal fee, and either seemed to care. I was also informed that they now, within the last few weeks, have started to notify members when their annual membership is up. Could it be that they have been getting similar complaints from disgruntled customers? So I am out $60.00, in addition to the monthly charges accrued due to my first attempt at canceling. This company lacks good business ethics.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS -- The Planet Fitness gym in which I'm a member had a fire and temporarily closed. I received an email stating that I could go to two alternate gyms. This morning I went to one of the alternate gyms and was told the manager will no longer allow me to attend. She would not allow me to stay for one more workout. The problem with Planet Fitness is that each gym is independently owned. I cannot cancel my membership, nor can I email them because they are closed.

I called corporate and was told I'd get a callback. So far I have not heard back. When I tried to email corporate, there is a message to email my home gym. Obviously I cannot do this because the gym is closed. This has been an extremely frustrating experience.

RENTON, WASHINGTON -- I was one of the first members at the gym's Renton Washington location on Sunset Blvd. I signed up as a member in April of 2011 and I have paid them $1,630 in membership fees since then. I recently moved out of the area. When I called to cancel my membership because of my move, I was told that I had to come in in-person or send them a certified letter in the mail to cancel. I was told that if I refused to pay, my dues would continue to accrue and I would be sent to a collection agency. After 7 years of loyal membership, I found their refusal to let me cancel my membership over the phone after moving out of the area to be unimpressive.

ANDERSON, SOUTH CAROLINA -- I paid for a black card membership, and some days later came in for my first session. There were two gals, maybe twenties, at the front desk.
The gal took her eyes of the TV she was watching and scanned my card, then back to the TV.
I told her this was my first visit, and wanted to get onto a stationary bike.
She told me I had to fill out an application to join Planet Fitness first. Then she noticed the Planet Fitness card she had just scanned. She waved towards the back of the room, and told me to find an available bike, and help myself.
The bikes were different than the ones at the Physcal Therapy I had been using. It took me 10 minutes to get one adjusted and turned on. I finally selected "manual" since I had not figured out how to program the thing.
The machine alternated between "resume" and "pause". Each "Pause" released all resistance causing me and my new knee replacement to be thrown forward. After a half dozen or so painful events, I walked out.
One of the gals did say "have a great day", but apparently missed my angry face.
The wife and I have found a new fitness place that acts like they give a crap.

No One Behind Counter, Then 30 Min Later Shows Up Rude

FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- They saw there is always someone there. Secure place. At 3:30am, no one working. Few min after 4 I am looking for staff, knocking on doors, asking other members. They say no one there for an hour. I try to activate a hydro bed 3 times, 2x behind the counter myself. Finally, staff walks in front door and says, "You're not supposed to be back here, what do you need". He said he was sitting in his car on his break, then follows me to the hydro bed to harass me. Threatens to cancel my membership. Buggers me while on the hydro bed for another 5 minutes. I ask him several times to just leave me alone, but he just stands there continuing to argue that he was on break.

Finally he leaves after he tell me I am rude as hell. As I leave his wife who is standing at the counter talking with him, stares at me as I leave and drive away. If he wanted to visit with his wife, why can't he do it while he is behind the counter instead of in his car watching members walk around looking for help?!

SHERMAN, TEXAS -- Occasionally they let the cleaning staff scan members in. This particular young lady tosses my keys back to me on the counter. I noticed that she doesn't do the key toss to other people. She doesn't even bother to speak when I approach the counter. I asked her does she do that to everyone and she pretended not to know what I meant.

I spoke to someone about it today and was told not to take it personal because she does it to other people. Then she should've been stopped before me. It's poor customer service and not acceptable. She's pulled the buffer up to the back of my feet before in the locker room and parked it forcing me to rush and put my things in the locker and get out of her way. Poor customer service. Not acceptable.
