Booked a rental car for Economy (TransCanada car rental), when arrived at the off-airport location was told the charge was 30% more than I booked for because they required liability insurance (which my insurance company told me was covered by my insurance ID card which I had on hand). When I requested to cancel the reservation I was threatened with a $50 cancellation fee and no ride given back to the airport!

I have never been scammed like this in my life. CarRentals.com said they were powerless because the terms were buried in three pages of details hidden at the bottom of their webpage. Both Economy and CarRentals.com are scam artists. CarRentals.com is a subsidiary of Expedia.com. That says a lot about Expedia as well.

KINGSTON, OKLAHOMA -- Made reservations for a 12 passenger van with prepaid insurance, pick up location LAX Airport Van Rentals (AVR). At pick up they did not honor my prepaid insurance and would not refund me to go somewhere else because I used a third party CARRENTALS.COM so I ended up paying for insurance and a fee for under 25 yr. driver.

The worst part was they provided me with a beat up van that was filthy, dirty and had a bad smell, the company would not do anything to accommodate me with a cleaner van or work with me in any way. I contacted carrentals.com thru email because they do not have a customer service line and could not get anything resolved. Very upset and mad about the whole experience.

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA -- I rented a car through Carrentals.com, the website directed me to Allianz car insurance, which is supposed to provide coverage of the rental car. I added the insurance, no problem. When I got to the pick up location, I was told that Allianz insurance isn't associated with Advantage rental, and that I would have to purchase their insurance, which was $27 additional a day. My car rental was a Pay Now, which is a discount price, but what they don't tell you is, when the car insurance is added, your rental amount is double the price you paid. There is no Pay Now discount really.

And I did try to cancel my reservation the day before, and was told by Advantage that I needed to email carrentals.com to cancel. I got no response until the following day, and was told by both companies Advantage and Carrentals.com No Refunds on Pay Now "discount " rentals. My car rental was for 4 days, they gave me No refund not even a partial refund. I will NEVER rent through CARRENTALS.COM again, and ADVANTAGE car rental is just terrible, I've had problems with them before. I hope this helps some save time and especially money.

BELLEVUE, WASHINGTON -- Booked a car rental through carrentals.com for San Diego 2 months in advance & was charged upfront with no cancellation option. My emailed confirmation said to call the rental agency (Priceless) with any questions & did NOT mention "no shuttle service when they're closed."

I called Priceless a couple days before my travel to confirm reservation & they said I would need to take Uber when I turn in the car on Sunday as they're closed so I requested refund. They indicated that they hadn't charged me yet so no issues with refund from them; however, I would have to email carrentals.com as they have no phone #. Their response to my e-mail a day later said my confirmation stated "No shuttle service when closed" which is a lie. I've charged this back to my credit card & will never use this service again. Avoid it.

Expensive Penalties for Minor Mistake

I booked an Advantage Rent A Car rental car via "pay now" on CarRentals.com and made a minor mistake - I had put Thursday instead of Wednesday on the pickup day. I immediately noticed the mistake and called Advantage, where the representative said I had to email CarRentals.com.

When I explained the problem by email, they said that I had to either pay them $50 to cancel or book a new non-refundable reservation, which would mean paying them another $200 after already paying them $185, and then request a cancellation of the original reservation to get the $185 back. All this so I could add one day to my reservation!

BUCHAREST -- I rent a car for Bucharest Airport. Then Carrentals.com, they charge my credit card immediately I made the reservation in the amount they said. My flight delay and even on the rental was not said. They ask for $35 on pick up extra and $35 extra on drop off because in not during working hours. I ask them what about the advertising. The gent said it's not his job. Of course I need the car and I pick up with this new charges. I said OK, $70 extra, what I can do.

Surprise came when I check by credit card and the charge me again the extra and the rental cost. On drop off they said the car has a chip on windshield and was not there. I was relax because such is about $10-12 in US and even in Europe/Romania. Second surprise came when they send a bill for $393.18 and refuse to explain what and why. Not even explanation for double charges. I rent cars all over the world but DO NOT RENT CARS IN ROMANIA AND DO NOT THINK TO RENT CARS FROM ECONOMY RENT A CAR. I doubt they are a legit business.

RALEIGH-DURHAM AIRPORT, NORTH CAROLINA -- Booked a car with unlimited mileage to pick up from RDU airport. Upon check-in I was told by the Advantage Car Rental agent that since I am a local renter with no flight itinerary, my rental is subject to $350 deposit, a maximum of 150 miles per day, and 0.50 cents per mile after. I showed them the e-mail confirmation from carrentals.com with the unlimited mileage that I booked for. They showed me their hardcopy showing the the local renter rule fine print, which upon close examination with the copy that carentals.com sent with the confirmation email did not match.

I cannot possibly accept the "new transaction details" because we will be using the car for a long drive. The agent and manager were not very helpful with my dilemma, even when I have called again to seek help regarding the matter, and was told to call carrentals.com. The problem is, the carrentals.com customer service number is directed to the same Advantage rental company number. I ended up not taking the car but my CC was still charged because I was baited and hooked through deceptive business practice.

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA -- I booked a car for pick up at LAX on the Carrentals.com website. I went through the reservation process and ended up booking a car for 10 pm pick up 3 days before my flight landed. On the day of the flight I get a call from the rental company stating I would not be able to pick up at that time as they close at 10 pm. I wasn't going to make it by 9:45 so they instructed me to make a back-up reservation. I tried to work with carrentals.com but they would not help. They instructed me to go back through the website and get a refund from separately from the rental company.

After I asked to be reimbursed for the difference they refused to accept responsibility for allowing me to book at a time when the supplier would not be open and refused to help in any way with the process. Can't be sure anything on the website is correct and the company does not seem to be properly organized. On top of that, they refused to take responsibility for their mistakes and had no intention of taking care of the customer in any situation where there is a problem. Will never use again, would definitely recommend you look elsewhere for a car rental.

Warning Don't Use CarRentals

FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA -- Rented using their Apple app, CarRentals booked reservation. Went to get the car, and they would not give me the car because we did not have local insurance which I was mislead to purchase online for $9 per day plus $18 for extra. I could not take the car and then they have no phone number to call only email, and they give a runaround via the email as well.

They give you no refund and options that make no sense like "Book another car and we will give you a refund, or an administrator fee which is more than the rental." Bad choice, as well as they write on their website that they are an Expedia company and when you call Expedia nobody knows who they are or how to call them. Total fraud.

Cheapest Rentals & Quick Helpful Customer Service Solely Through Email

I had to change my travel dates due to a death in the family, and at first I had difficulty finding anyone to discuss my options with, as the number provided in the confirmation email is for the actual car rental company, but they tell you only the website providers can assist me. The only contact I could find for carrentals.com was an email address, but the response was quick, personal, and very helpful.

I made another reservation through their website and they were able to work with the car rental company, due to my circumstances, and refund the original reservation, even though they do make it clear at the time of purchase that sales are final and there are no cancellations. This website had the best prices and was easy to use and I was very satisfied with their customer service. I would use this site again and recommend their services.
