Discover jacked up my rate as soon as I started using it after years of inactivity
By -

A couple of years ago, I decided I needed to use my Discover card, which I had not used in several years. Within a few months (and 0 late payments), I received a notice that my rate was going up to 28.99%!!!! I recently tried to get them to lower my rate, and please explain what caused the hike in the first place.

Closing Your Account
By -

I had paid my Discover bill in full and had a $29.00 credit on the account. I called the company and asked that they refund my $29.00 and close my account. (1st request) I was asked why I wanted to close the account. I told them that I was slowly paying off all my debt and I wanted this account closed. (2nd request)

The representative told me that if I was trying to pay off my debt, she could give me a low-interest rate on my card and have all my debt transferred to my Discover card. I again asked her to please just close my account. (3rd request) She asked if there was anything she could do to have me make Discover my primary card of choice and I again asked her to simply close the account (4th request).

She warned me that closing this account could adversely affect my FICO score and strongly warned me not to close it. I told her she didn't need to worry about MY FICO score, I would worry about it, CLOSE MY ACCOUNT (5th request).

Then she went on to tell me I didn't need to raise my voice, that she needed to let me know what products were available, they wanted to keep my business, they would help me pay off my debt by helping my consolidate, blah blah blah.

I asked if by law she needed to provide me with this information and was told YES. I then asked her if she was sure BY LAW that she needed to tell me this. She then backtracked and told me that it was company policy that she tell me this, it was not the law. This went on for 10 minutes!!

I finally warned her to close the ** account or I'd report her to the Better Business Bureau. She was quiet for the rest of the phone call and within 10 days I received my check and a letter that my account had been closed.

It's no wonder that so many people are in debt up to their eyeballs. Forewarned is forearmed. If you want to close your account, don't be bullied by the customer service representative CLOSE IT.

Awful Service! Don't Do Business With Them!

SEATTLE, WASHINGTON -- This company and its employees are plain awful! First, the notifications for payments don't always go through then they charge you for a late payment and call you non stop (even if you have made payments throughout the month that equal up to or more than the min payment due). Then they con you into making a bigger payment than you really need to by saying that that is the minimum payment due when in reality it is not. When you call to get this worked out the banking services department's employees are incredibly rude. They talk over you and insist that you have been talking over them (and in order to insult you they had to talk over you...).

Also they talk as if they are lawyers and know your rights better than you know your own (I did my research and my father is a lawyer). Then when you insist to talk to a supervisor they insist that they don't have one, so they are either lying or poorly run. Also they cash back only works once you have $50 worth of cash back. Until then you are required to use it at Amazon (this is a stipulation they don't make clear when signing up). All in all this is one of the absolute worst companies I have ever had to deal with! I would suggest that you DO NOT DO BUSINESS WITH THEM EVER FOR ANY REASON seeing as though their main issue is customer service and stealing money.

Discover Charged My Account Without Permission

I had a auto ship set up with a company, that's another complaint, but Discover had my account set up for an auto ship. So I'm having trouble cancelling the auto ship. So, I canceled the card number and have a new acct. number set with Discover. This is at least six before the next $277. Auto ship is to be sent out, all good right, no acct. number, no auto ship.

I heard from Discover in about 10 days of getting my new number, with a letter in the mail saying that I will need to contact any companies that I my have automatic payments or companies that I may have an auto ship set up with. It said, so as long as I do not give this company (Visalus) my new account number there will be no more $277 auto ship because they're not going to send it out without being paid first. But Discover let them charge to my new acct. number without my permission.

So, the product comes, Discover charges me, I send this product back the next day un-opened. But after three months of investigation by brilliant people at Discover, they say the shipment was justified and I owe the Visalus company $277 for something that should never have been charged to my acct. Plus, I sent the product back un-opened, and yes I will cancel my Discover card, as much as these people say they care, they really don't.

Change in Payment Due Date
By -

Discover customers should note that the company changed payment due dates for many of its customers as of June 2009. This policy, which was effected to create a 5-day window between due dates and statements closing dates, was outlined to customers in a letter sent in April 2009. While I did get the letter, it was full of fine print and details and I didn't really get how it would impact me until I got my June statement.

For the last several years I have had a payment due date of the 19 of the month with no late payments. My due date was changed to the 15 and therefore for June (I paid 6-19) they charged me a late fee and jacked up my interest rate by 7 points due to late payments. I called to complain and they did agree to change my rate back and credit the late fee; but I am still really angry because they probably did this to thousands of customers who have not figured it out yet.

10+ Years Gets Account Closed
By -

NEW CASTLE, DELAWARE -- If you're considering getting a Discover Card, please reconsider. Discover was my longest held credit card until they recently closed the account. Apparently perfect payment history and a decade of loyalty meant nothing when they reviewed my account and determined it wasn't being used as often as they liked. Asked how often they expect the card to be used, they replied, "It varies."

Writing the "customer advocacy" department is pointless because they are not interested in maintaining loyalty. Discover is an inadequate credit card and is not accepted at many of your local vendors. Remember to ALWAYS pay your credit card off within the grace period. Just do it with a MC, VISA or AMEX.

Arbitrary increase of rate for good customers!!
By -

The following is a letter sent to David Nelms, Discover Financial's CEO, by email and fax- I have been a Discover Card member for over 6 years now and until today I have been pretty happy with your company. Unfortunately, I just learned that my interest rate had been arbitrarily increased from 11% to almost 16% for no good reason! The “reasons” given me when I pressed your customer service agent were that some of the following may have applied and thus the company felt justified in penalizing me by increasing my rate: (1) long standing card holder (for greater than one year)– isn't this a good thing? To be celebrated???

(2) interest rate currently less than 20%; and (3) less than monthly usage. The first two are correct, and the last is absolutely not. I use the card often, have maintained a healthy balance for you to make money off of for a long time, and always make my payments and in excess of the minimum due. How does this qualify me for a penalty??? You have just lost my business. And my husband's. I will also be posting this disgrace on consumer websites so others are not subject to this behavior. How dare you?

Note that I have just made arrangements to close my account and will be paying off the balance in full immediately. You are a grave, grave, grave disappointment as a company.- Please pass along this infuriating and unfair behavior to other unknowing card holders... I makes a person feel like doing the right thing isn't even good enough any more!!!

Discover Raising Rates 20% to 25%??
By -

MCLEAN, VIRGINIA -- In a world where the Feds are lowering rates as the economy tanks due to Real Estate, Discover has the audacity to raise rates on consumers! We will save money on mortgages, but will have to turn around and give it to the greedy credit card companies. They entice you into a higher limit, and in fact reward you for getting there. Then, lay in wait.

I have been in possession of a Discover Card for about ten years now. Two years ago I called Discover and asked why I was not getting "Cash Back" or "Rewards" like they advertise. Their answer was that I was set at a special rate of 14.99% while everyone else was at 18.99%. I "Discovered" this was not the case. Several people were at the same rate as I and did get rewards.

Here is the best of all: On the card they sent to notify everyone, they state that if you disagree with this rate hike, just write them and tell them. However, If you do this, they will close your account and demand you pay all of what you owe. Is this not intimidation? A threat to whistle blowers? Send this out to everyone you know and just maybe they will see that consumers are not going to take it!

Discover Card Ripoff!! Bait and Switch!!!

SALT LAKE, OHIO -- I was given an offer that if I spent 3000/month Aug-December 2013 I would get a 500 reward. I called periodically to make sure I was on track for each month. Always happily told I was on track. Come end of December, after I have spent over 15,000 on their card, now they tell me they have no record of "signing up" and there is "nothing they can do."

Why do they structure their program with all these confusing sign ups - signs ups for this and that. I believe I did sign up, but even if I missed... They got the benefit of the bargain - over 15,000. What normal business would get what they were after from a customer and then not come through, paperwork details be damned? Assuming they actually cared about their relations with a customer, that is. The whole purpose of the promotion was presumably to get customers to use their card more. Not only will they not achieve that goal with me, they will get a counterproductive result as I will cancel the card.

Supervisors pretend they have no authority, or worse, they are chained to ridiculous corporate policies that require treating customers like crap. I have no room for ridiculous people or organizations in my life. They use confusing and proliferating sign ups to rip off customers! That is their business model!

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- First Off, I (We) have been dealing with Discover for some years now. And like many complaints I have read I feel someone wrote it for Me!! Not much is different in the way we have been treated by these ruthless individuals. One thing, are when we had about 3,000 on the card We stopped using it. I usually paid $10 or so over the min. payment amount just to be ahead a little. Well seemed like the bill kept getting higher... When I called they always told me my payment was late... the payment due date was ALWAYS the 13th & was auto draft from my bank account So if the 13th landed on Sun, the payment automatically came out Mon A.M.

Hum, it was late to them. Even though they said it wasn't, I could see the outcome on the next billing cycle. We were supposed to be paperless Billing!? How does that work? We still get monthly statements & internet billing. I have not charged on my card for 3 yrs. In fact both have been cut up. My bill is over 5,000. Let me tell You also I have offered them 3,000 for a settlement just last week. Believe me when I say the answer was "No. We're not accepting 'any' settlements at this time." WTH!!

Question now - what can we do? Who out there can help Us and Numerous others who have been taken? I'm very much believing from reading one other review that Discover is in fact IS a White Collar Terrorist Organization Operating with Impunity in the United States.
