Do Not Apply For A Discover It Student Card!!!

TEXAS, TEXAS -- Do not apply for the Discover It Student Card! They do not have standards for approving or denying applications. My twin sister and I will both be college freshmen in the fall. In order to start building our credit history we both applied for the Discover It Student Card. We applied on the same day with virtually the same information. Neither of us have had credit cards before. We worked at the same grocery store for the same amount of time. We have the same address, birth date, etc. Essentially, in the eyes of a credit card company, we have identical credit histories.

My sister's application was approved. My application was denied due to “insufficient credit history.” They claimed that I had to get a co-applicant. I called the supposedly “stellar” customer service, and I was transferred from department to department. I was forced to explain my situation repeatedly and still no one was able to give me a straight answer as to why my TWIN sister with the SAME credit history was approved while I was denied.

All the representatives refused to review my application again. They just kept saying I had “insufficient history” and needed a co-applicant. They refused to tell me why my sister didn't need one even when I had her authorize them to provide us with the information. My father has had a Discover card for a while, but needless to say my entire family is leaving Discover for good. I gave this card a chance because it's supposed to be the best student card out there. Instead, I got horrible treatment and evasive representatives who don't care about potential customers at all.

Discover Card Does Not Care About Long-Term Card Members

WILMINGTON, DELAWARE -- I have been a Discover Card member since 2000. Recently, I was promised 5% cash back on 'every purchase' for 3 months when I received and activated my new card. I checked my rewards balance after 2 months to find I was receive less than 1% cash back. I called to correct the error only to be told I had to spend $500 in order to receive the 5% and could only receive up to $75 in rewards. Well, I was pretty peeved and said, "I'll just close my account" and hung up. I wrote the CEO complaining about their treatment and false promises. I received a call the following day from the 'executive office' and ended up hanging up on them too.

I logged into my account just the other day and the rewards money I had was gone. I emailed customer service only to be told my account had been closed as per my request. Funny because it was closed the day before I received the call from the executive office... Why would they call if I was no longer a member?? Discover card closed my account without verifying I actually wanted it closed. They closed it without verifying any security information or reviewing any account closure agreements/consequences with me. They were unapologetic and simply said, "You closed your account so you forfeited your rewards."

After being a member for 13 years with no late payments and never going over my limit that's what I got. Discover card doesn't give a damn about their customers and their cash back program is a joke. I'll stick with my Bank of America Visa card and my Chase MasterCard… at least they honor their promises.

I'm Sick of Credit Card Interest Rates

AMELIA, VIRGINIA -- I've had a Discover credit card for years, since 2002. I have not managed to pay it off yet. I tried making payments over the minimum. That certainly didn't work. If I send a $100.00 to them, only $9.00 dollars goes to the principal. I'm so sick of it. I'm think of going to the bank and borrowing enough to pay them off and just cancelling the card all together. Even American General Finance company is starting to look good. I might go to them. I'm sick of paying 29.99% interest and I haven't used the card since last year.

Electronic payments Beware
By -

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- Discover only accepts paper checks for payment from another bank. I use Chase bank. Chase has to cut a paper check and mail it to Discover. I pay Chase online and this actually delays the payment process. I sent a bill payment online eight days ahead of time. It was accepted one day late and I was charged a $25.00 late fee. The representative from Discover lied to me saying that Chase and Discover use the same online processing center, and the delay had to be the fault of Chase. I suspect Discover purposely wishes to delay the payment process to increase late fees. This is a very unethical way to do business.

Electronic payment should speed up the process. My other bank cards are always processed within 2 days via online payment. Discover obviously figured out that snail mail is good for their bottom-line $$ - Short-term greed equals long-term customer dissatisfaction. It may not surface right away, but I am sure others have also been victimized by this MAIL SCAM.... I have a letter from Chase Bank that details all of this. They actually put a paper check into an envelope and mail it. I could never make up something this. I snail mailed my latest payment to Discover and it was processed in two days. Just my experience.

Discover Card is losing business
By -

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- I've been a Discover Card holder for at least 10 years and slowly but surely they have been running business off. My home State of Nebraska doesn't even take their card any more. And lots of businesses that used to take the card don't any more. Why, these ex-vendors have told me that Discover fees them to death, so they quit taking it. They ought to lower their fees to keep vendors and get new ones. Even Western Union has stopped taking their card. They need to do away with that cashback program and take care of their vendors. Lets face it, if vendors don't take the card why should we consumers even want one?

They need to change their thinking to volume instead of fees. They need to get their vendors back and get new ones so people use the card. Let's face it, credit card companies make their money of the interest they charge we consumers, not vendor fees. I've tried to find out how to contact the company to no avail. It seems they don't mind losing money, are they trying to go out of business? Whoever is making decisions for Discover isn't doing a good job at all, go see what their stocks are doing. What I've seen is they aren't doing well.

So I say to them get off your butts and come up with a way better marketing plan to keep and get new vendors instead of driving them off. I personally have complained to deaf ears, and you can't talk to anyone with some authority they hide so well. So when I pay the card off real soon I'm going to drop them and get a Visa again. People take those!

Discover Fraud

RALEIGH, NORTH CAROLINA -- In 2006 Discover Card allowed a card to be opened in my name by someone other than and now expect me to pay them. They said that since I have no proof that I did not open the account I am liable... I have sent complaints to Attorney General and other customer protection groups to no avail and I have emailed and called executives at Discover - no results.

They have sent the info to a slimy attorney ** and he is taking me to court over 3k and all attorneys I spoke to said it will cost more to fight him and that this is what he does is take small dollar debt so that paying an attorney cost more than the debt and you have to fight him yourself which allows to catch you in a procedural error so he prevents you from your day in court. How in America can your day in court be prevented??? Help me fight this injustice by joining the stop ** of smith debnam group and the anti-Discover Card group on Facebook. United we can defeat this scourge!

Does it really pay to discover??

After being a loyal customer for 15 years, I had to say goodbye to this card. Love how in the midst of mass mailings that you get and typically ignore from places, Discover had decided to change the date my payment was due. Guilty of not always opening statements and opting to walk in Sears and make a payment - therefore, I was late on a couple of payments. Once I found out, I immediately corrected this. Until this time, NEVER missed a payment or was late. Customer service was a rude joke. They finally credited me one of the late fees I was charged. They don't care how long you have been a customer or your payment history! What a joke! See you, Discover!

Bad Company Policies

SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH -- I got a Discover Card years ago. It was a low interest rate. Unfortunately, because their fees are high, a lot of companies won't take Discover. In the last year, I noticed a postcard mailing from them, which inside indicated that they were going to raise my interest rate. When I called, they lowered it. I got another one of these mailings this week, saying that I have triggered an interest rate increase rate to 29.9%. I called and they said I was 2 days late on my Sept. billing. They reduced it again, but I am getting sick of this ruthless, money-hungry bunch. Three times and they are out!

Discover Card rate increase
By -

I was looking online for an anti-virus for my computer, I got the card through a promotion.. I think I had $20 on the card. Never got the first statement so Discover Card raised my rate to 21% because the first statement never made it to my Address. LOL. So they get 21% of 0 because I have never had a balance! Oh and I have a credit score of 800. I'm thinking of putting a $3.00 online new paper on the account and never using the card again, see how much they can make off of that. I think just the paperwork will add up more than they will make.

Do not Use Discover Card
By -

CAROAL STREAM, ILLINOIS -- Stop using Discover Card. Don't fall for 5% cashback. You will never see the money, unless you have nothing better to do in life, than calling them every three months. If you forgot to register, every three months, you lose, they win. If call customer service, they will give you ridiculous answers that even they could not agree with! Ha! Ha! Continue to use the one card that you normally use, you will avoid all the late fees, finance charge, to earn $2 bonus at end of the year, if that! Capital One card is the best one. I have been using it for last 10 years. Their bonus is simple, no frills, no calling & registering nonsense, like Discover Card.
