Empire cannot measure
By -

I also made the mistake of using Empire. I feel like they used generic type carpet (not mohawk or shaw). We really liked the men who installed the carpet. They did a good job and knew what they were doing. I just feel the salesman walked around for a few minutes and came up with a number. He came to us with a 572 square foot and I asked him how? 3 bedrooms are not that big. Buy 1 get 2 free really? So 1 bedroom size 12x14 with a 6x6 closet is $2500 bucks. If we did not have a 2 year old and plans to go somewhere, I think I would have passed. I wish we would have taken the time and done more homework, and maybe used a real carpet store.

I've read your post and would like to follow back with you. I'm disappointed to hear you aren't satisfied with your purchase as we want all of our customers to leave their experience happy with the results. I assure you we do carry only quality, name-brand products for our customers. I realize you also were questioning your final estimate. The fully installed price you were provided included the cost of your product, the installation and labor and any other services you requested including haul away, the moving of your furniture, etc. However, the product you purchased may not have been part of the promotion, depending on the one you chose. Keep in mind, that a manufacturer product warranty and an installation warranty are also included in the price. Since we do not have your contact information, could you please send it to us? Your satisfaction is important and we'd like to reach out to you and see if there is any way we can turn your experience around and ensure you're pleased with your purchase. Pushy Salesman, Overbid
By -

Had Empire out to bid the replace of carpet and install of laminate floors. Like seen on other reviews salesman started out nice and was willing to help us pick out the carpet style that we wanted. When he finished the bid he went out to his car so we could talk. We had told him all we wanted was a bid and we were not ready to go forth until we finished some home improvements.

Then he started to push by telling us the 5% off the whole bid was only good till he left. So he offers to go back out to his car to let us talk. So we talked about how to get him out of our house. I told him that we didn't want to sign today. He got all huffy said fine grabbed his samples and left. The next day we had a small hometown company out for a bid. We did not show him Empire's bid and he beat them by $900.00. That was with Empire's "free" installation. Then we showed him Empire's bid. They had overbid us 100 square feet for carpet like $300.00. I would not use Empire and will try to steer anyone away.

Company Response 02/15/2011:

I apologize you did not have the experience you were hoping for. Since we don't have retail stores, our in-home appointments are the only way for us to show you our products and provide you with our service. In regards to our pricing, other flooring companies do have complex pricing information like ours and no two are the same. The fully installed price you received during your appointment includes the cost of the product and installation labor as well as any other services that you may have selected such as haul away, the moving of your furniture, etc. From your post, I can see you've decided to go with another company for your home improvements but I'd like the chance to speak with you so we may follow back with the sales representative involved. If you're willing, please send your contact information to customersupport@empiretoday.com or contact me via phone at 888-588-2315 x4195 so we may reach out to you.

Buyer Beware!!!
By -

This company will schedule your free consultation immediately. However, the installer called 5 times to to confirm that he was coming. He came finally 45 mins. late. My scheduled appointment 11-1pm. My husband scheduled an installation for the following week but after reading the reviews and the outrageous pricing!!! I called customer service to cancel I was transferred to 3 Different People with the pressure to keep the appt. They even offered a $100.00 price deduction to help me. (Impressive).

The sales representative proceeded to tell me that I scheduled the free appt. (I guess this was a guilt trip he wanted me to take) and He was only trying to Help me. I will never use them. BUYER BEWARE. Pushy sales rep, late sales representative.

So sorry I used them
By -

I have an apt building and a professional friend told me how satisfied the owners of a bldg she managed were with a change to Pergo flooring. When I needed to replace carpeting I chose Empire because of the longevity of their product and the knowledge and professionalism of the salesman. The installation went smoothly and the look was high quality. 14 months later my very-careful tenant noticed 1 plank had bubbling, which looked like it was de-laminating.

I called the sales person, who was informative, but referred me to the general 800 number. I have had 4 calls from them-all non-productive and ignoring whatever I said. The last girl, **, called to reiterate wrong information (the 2nd time). I asked for a supervisor and she hung up on me. When I called the 800 number, a nice also-young girl said the minimum "I'm sorry" and tried to get a supervisor to the phone. She said he finally walked up to her but wouldn't pick up the phone. She also couldn't find **.

I spent twice as much $ thinking this product would be better quality and would last, and the company had been around for a long time. LEARN FROM MY MISTAKE.

Insider knowledge to help you decide
By -

I worked in wholesale flooring for over 20 yrs so know a bit about about retailing and carpeting. First Empire works on one of the highest profit margins of any retailer I'm familiar with. While 40-60% may be reasonable with most stores Empire works on a 4-500% profit margin. Buying carpet cheap and selling it at greatly inflated prices is their model.

When you read the reviews of this company and someone is given a quote for $8000 then immediately offered a $2000 discount that should give you some sort of clue. Someone has to pay for non stop TV ads. Do you really think you pay for one room and get two free???: All the sales staff are not employees as Empire makes all 'employees' become independent contractors. They operate on a one stop close with high pressure and no time to make an informed decision. I ask you to consider shopping at a local retailer that will give you much better service and not that much of a mark up and deal with people you trust.

Empire Carpets Builders Grade Garbage
By -

We moved into our current home 5 years ago and the people who lived here prior to us had a feral cat. We spent $700 on carpet cleaning and still the carpets would not come clean. We decided to go with Empire because of their ads to install quickly...that they did. Not sure any of the installers spoke a word of English. The Berber carpet in the Family room has held up the best but still looks much older than 5 years... The neutral tan color carpet we got throughout the house looks like it is 10-12 years old...it is worn and will not even come clean now with the wet vac.

The carpets are disgusting...it is the worst carpet ever and I will NEVER use Empire again... I would rather wait and get a better stain master type carpet then the junk that Empire sells...catchy jingle but it's all hype and not worth what you pay. It cost us $6,000 to re-carpet the entire house and in 5 years the carpet is totally shot. Can't wait to get rid of it and chalk it up as a bad mistake and impulse move on our part... NEVER, NEVER buy Empire. You will get cheap crappy carpets installed quickly.

Empire experience
By -

WOW. Sales guy shows up looks and looks around. Spends five minutes at my kitchen table writing up some chicken scratch. Proceeded to use high pressure sales tactics for about two hours, made me feel uncomfortable in my own house. Then, when I told him I would like to review his chicken scratch with my father, as he is a contractor, he replied, "Oh I understand you're not the decision maker." I would recommend not treating potential customers in this manner. If this guy worked for me he would be fired after treating a customer this way. I am disgusted...

Empires hard wood floor is worthless
By -

CHARLOTTE, NORTH CAROLINA -- Fell for the 3 rooms for the price of 1 sale. I specifically asked the salesperson how easy it was to scratch the flooring and pointed out the medium sized dog in the rear yard. Sales guy assured me that it was very tough and that the dog would not damage the floor. My mother just recently had hard wood floors installed from another company and she has a dog and doesn't have a single scratch, so I figured he was being truthful.

As soon as the installers leave and I bring my dog in for the night, the floor was scratched. I called the company to have it repaired and they told me that as a courtesy they would repair that area but that damage done by pets wasn't covered and that they wouldn't repair any more. I called the company and explained to them that their sales person assured me that this wouldn't be a problem and they tell me that hard wood floors are extremely easy to scratch. I am constantly having to patch small dents and holes in the floor with wood putty now. I dropped my flipping car keys the other day and it knocked a hole it it.

I complained enough that I was able to get them to refund $1000 but that really wasn't enough. Now I'm stuck with a worthless floor that you can't walk across barefoot without damaging. NEVER AGAIN Empire. You will not get a dime of my money ever again.

Company Response 07/16/2010:

Thank you for bringing your hardwood experience to our attention. We apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused you. Empire provided a free repair for an issue that was not covered by warranty as well as provided a discount to the order for customer satisfaction per our agreement.

Worst mistake ever made, Huntersville NC
By -

I fell for the ad of 60% off carpet. The salesman was good I will give him that. He played a guy who was having to sell carpet in a down economy. He opened up his books and made us feel that he was selling it to us at the lowest profit margin available 6%. Being naive we decided to go with Empire spending $3500. Then the lies began. They were not able to provide me with the specs on the carpet, found out it was polyester not nylon. They tried to string me along for the 3 days so that I would not be able to cancel. Installed 2 rooms and brought the wrong color for the third. Continued to get runaround.

Carpet at Lowe's and Home Depot much better quality 1/2 the price. I had them take up the carpet as I cancelled in the 3 day period. To do this you have to send copy of paper to Illinois. Not one person gave a crap after I signed the contract. RUN FROM THIS COMPANY. Should have listened to the countless negative reviews all over the internet.

P.S. Check out the company response below. YOU KNOW IT IS BAD WHEN THE COMPANY RESPONSE IS CUT AND PASTED ON ALL THESE COMPLAINTS SAYING THE SAME THING BUT ACTUALLY MEANING NOTHING.

Bad Sales Tactics
By -

I scheduled to have a salesman come measure and quote the entire house. A total of 1500 square feet. The guy comes out (by the way, late) and starts measuring the place. He tried constantly to push me into carpeting when I specifically said laminate both when I scheduled and also when he walked in the door. I also informed him when he walked in that I was just starting to shop around and he was the first person to come out.

After measuring, he dinks around on his calculator, never once looking at any price sheets, and just says $10,800 for all laminate and $6900 for carpet. I asked to get an estimate in writing and he say they ONLY bid by the job. He can't give me an estimate sheet detailing material pricing and labor. Total BS! He then asks if there is anyway he can get my business right on the spot. When I said absolutely not (reiterated the "shop around" statement for the 4th time), he packs up fast and is gone just like that. What a moron!
