Bad Customer Service
By -

I have purchased quite a few things from Lumber Liquidators over the years just by going into the store here in San Diego. Never a problem. This time I checked their online sale and noticed they had a butcher block countertop on special for 199.99+Tx. I called the store here on Miramar Road in San Diego and asked if they actually had it in stock or if I ordered one online how long would it take to get to the store. I was told 6-10 days. I went ahead and placed the order and paid online.

After twelve days of not hearing anything and no change on the online status I called and was told by one of their customer service representatives that it had to be back ordered but would be in the warehouse by 4/29. A few days would be needed for a quality inspection and it then would be shipped to the store here in San Diego. Reluctantly I said "okay I would wait".

On 5/7 I still hadn't heard anything and the "In Process" still appeared on my online order status. I decided to call again and another customer service representative after several minutes of searching came back to tell me it was being shipped by freight train and said it would be an additional up to 2 weeks. At this point I have had it and asked her to cancel my order. I didn't receive any cancellation number nor did I receive a cancellation email from them. To date the order still appears "In Process" online.

I just don't understand why companies are so quick to charge your credit card but then don't care how long it takes them to get you the order even though they promise it within a much shorter time. They could have at least called me or updated the online status so I knew what was going on. I will no longer be purchasing anything from them.

Company Response 05/12/2010:

Thank you for sharing your experience. Butcher Blocks are bulky items and not general stock items for most locations. Transporting these items outside normal channels can be expensive and we keep our costs low by offering these types of specials utilizing the least expensive transportation options, including store to store transfers when appropriate. Given the chain of events you described we document contact in case exceptions are warranted and I can see where this would have been appropriate to incur some added costs to expedite the product to you. We clearly state that all delivery dates are estimates when you place your order as most companies do because some issues outside of our direct control can cause delays and we do everything we can to deliver! When you provide a credit card for purchase this demonstrates a commitment and a call to action. We recently granted agents a higher level of authority to provide more timely customer satisfaction to overcome this exact type of challenge when a few more shipping dollars spent could result in greater customer satisfaction. We're also working to improve the order experience and notifications process as well, and regret this became a negative experience for you. Fortunately this is not the norm and we're sorry to hear this happened. We offer great products at low prices and hope you reconsider and purchase from us again in the future.

LINCOLN, NEBRASKA -- Spent $3,500.00 on a "crap-tastic" bamboo flooring and another $1500.00 for a qualified wood flooring professional to install it. Shortly after it was installed it began contracting an alarming amount. So much so, that I have 1/2 gaps at the doorways and it has pulled away from under the woodwork in several rooms. I explained the situation to the guys at the store and they told me that there was NO WARRANTY since I didn't have their breathtakingly expensive installers put it in.

They agreed when I showed them pictures that it was bad, but their advice was to put transition pieces in where the floor has separated between rooms, which of course looks terrible (speed bumps everywhere in the house) and when it warms up, the floor expands according and begins to buckle. I am going to end up throwing it all away and buying flooring from a reputable source. Note: if you don't write a positive review on their website, they don't publish it. The flooring has since been discounted. I have had two wood flooring experts over and they just felt bad for me that I got ripped off. Both agreed the issue was defective material and cannot remedied.

SANFORD, FLORIDA -- After searching the Lumber Liquidators website I found the following flooring on sale for $2.96 a sq ft: **. So we hopped in the car and drove 20 miles to the nearest store which is in Sanford, FL. "We don't have it," says the salesperson, and after a few minutes on his computer he says he can't find a purchase order for it and the soonest he could probably get it is April. APRIL?!!! Then he tries to up-sell us to Anji Bamboo which is listed @ $4.99 sq/ft but says he can do $3.59 sq/ft. Fine, we'll take it. Then he asks how much we need and I tell him 480 sq ft.

After another few minutes on his computer he says he doesn't have it and he "might" be able to get it from Texas. TEXAS?!! This despite the sign posted on the display of the Anji Bamboo saying "Best Seller" and "In Stock". We left in disgust over what can only be described as borderline switch-and-bait tactics and then poor customer service in response to what I imagine was viewed as a small order from the salesman's perspective.

CLEVELAND, OHIO -- I'm a contractor and was recently introduced to manager at 540 Old Brookpark Rd, Cleveland OH. Purchased floors for couple of jobs at store already. Sales people could barely close order and loading material was real adventure, but I did not think much of it. However on my next visit after waiting in line for more than an hour (three customers in front of me), manager enters the store and picks person behind me in line to help.

After I politely stated that it was my turn, he started yelling and lecturing me in front of everybody and asking: "Who am I to come to his store and tell him how to do his job?" Actually I had to agree to his terms so he would finish my order and my time would not be wasted, but needless to say I'm never going back there again.

Floor Buckling After 7 Months of Being Installed

TAMPA, FLORIDA -- Last year Lumber Liquidators installed 8 areas in my house with the thick flooring. In April noticed an area of the floor buckling. Contacted customer service and they forwarded the information to warranty. Now this next decision was made from the pics I took, no one had been out to even look at the floor. Warranty dept said it was an install problem. ** sent out another partner company to look at the floor last month. They are saying there is too much moisture in the floor area, of which is the computer room.

I made the comment that apparently the installer did not do the proper test for moisture and went ahead and did the install anyway. By the way the original installer has to this day never contacted me. As for the outcome after spending $6000.00 I have no resolve on this problem, not even a call back from ** with what will be done about this. I sent her an email and still not response. Do not buy from Lumber Liquidators. Their warranty is crap. I actually am considering on suing this company for their negligence in this.

Company Response 07/09/2012:

LL Response: The installation concerns are upsetting and we've asked The Home Service Store to reach out to you. Keep in mind moisture intrusion can occur and there can be many causes that have nothing to do with the installer, so please keep an open mind as the warranty covers any concerns where the installaiton is at fault, but does not protect against issues that are not installaiton related in nature. We agree this must be frustrating, but to make a blanket statement about the warranty like you did ignores the possibility that the problem may be your own and not a product, or installation concern at all. We appreciate your shopping with us and the floor looks great from the photos I viewed. No matter where you source materials from, if there's a moisture concern within your home it would react this way until the source of the problems corrected. A representative from HSS will be contacting you shortly.

AUBURN, MAINE -- DO NOT USE LUMBER LIQUIDATORS! I purchased strand bamboo flooring by Morning Star from the Auburn, Maine store. It was in stock. I went in intending to purchase another product and was steered to this particular bamboo by a salesman. I asked at the time of sale if there was anything I needed to know about the product, this is a standard question I ask about everything I purchase for the remodel. He said the only thing was the addition of an underlayment pad which my installer used. My installer started laying and discovered his nailer was causing dimpling. He called LL and Corporate stated dimpling has been an ongoing problem and to use a 50P nailer.

The installer went out and got a 50P nailer and again there was pronounced dimpling though not quite as bad. This time I called Corporate and was transferred to **. She had a well-rehearsed attitude issue and told me we should have glued it down, but she would speak with her supervisor. I told her the website says nail or glue. I received a letter yesterday. After 5 days of trying to speak with someone higher up in customer service, that stated we should have pre-drilled and then nailed.

They also threw in we used more than 50% of the product which is completely false. Lumber Liquidator's letter stated they would not take any responsibility. Needless to say my installer, who has a stellar reputation that has been sullied by LL is furious. BTW he has laid 1600 sf of bamboo from another supplier in my house without issue. Lumber Liquidators is not a good company. They have foisted a defective product on the public rather than dealing with their supplier as a reliable company with pride would do.

Buyer Beware

We wanted to put in laminate wood flooring. We seen Lumber Liquidators ad for 39 cents a square foot. We went to see. They did not have enough to do a whole room, more would have to be ordered. They accomplished their goal to get us in the store. We bought flooring for kitchen at app. 1.39 a square foot. After trying to install two times we realized the pad that is adhered to the back was put on crooked and covering the groove that the next piece snaps into. We pulled it up yet again and called the store we bought it at. They stated they could not refund but could ordered more. It would take 2 or 3 weeks to get. It's 1 week till Thanksgiving this year last week.

We said "Unacceptable." They said we could pick a different color but we would have to pay the difference in price. They told us if it was damaged they could refund but this is not damaged. I stated "No, it's worse than damaged. It's made wrong." NO REFUND! SO BUYER BEWARE. I learned a lesson today! It cost me over 250.00 dollars. THEY WILL NEVER SEE ME AGAIN OR HOPEFULLY ANYONE I KNOW!!!

Company Response 11/28/2011:

LL Response

Our terms and conditions are clearly stated at the time of purchase and LL will gladly accept back ANY material deemed defective if uninstalled. In this case a single piece of flooring is not going to stop the project and could be considered waste, or easily replaced with a box by the store. We hold manufacturers accountable for any defective material. The communication here with the store would suggest we like to make customers unhappy and that's not how we've come to be the largest supplier in the country. Call Customer Care and any associate will gladly help you so we can learn more about this issue. Lumber Liquidators sells brand new product, in some cases exclusively, and also sells liquidation items, odd lots and other items to help consumers enjoy more product for your money than the big box stores offer. They'll likely direct you to the manufacturer where LL stands before the manufacturer ready to help our customer first. It sounds like there's more to your story and we're willing to help and encourage you to call us right away. Use the number on your invoice and we'll make it right. It's unfortunate this is where you felt you needed to go for help, but we're not backing away and stand ready to assist you. On behalf of the company, please accept our apology if this problem interfered at all with your holiday plans. Customer Care will be placed on alert awaiting your call…something no big box stores prepared to do!

Bad Return Policy, Inflating Order, Quality Lower Than Display In Show Room
By -

Before you buy from Lumber Liquidators, Google "Lumber Liquidators Complaint" - Then you will be equipped to do business with them in a way that MAY be satisfactory. Lumber Liquidators' return policy is that they will not accept returns after 30 days. When it comes to putting in a floor, many people's floors are not done within 30 days, and even if they are, they probably have no clue that if they don't make the return within 30 days that it will be refused.

Do your own measurements - read the complaints on Lumber Liquidators - with their assistance in determining the order quantity, you will have way too much left over that you probably will not successfully return. Lumber Liquidators has good prices and good selection, but their quality is not as good as they advertise - just read all the complaints and make an educated decision.

Defective Finish and No Recourse
By -

GREENSBORO, NORTH CAROLINA -- We ordered about $18,000 worth of the carbonized bamboo. The wood color and tones of the floor are gorgeous, however the finish on it is inferior to any wood floor we have ever seen. The finish looks like they missed a step in the process and it is very porous and rough. This being said there is no way to clean the floor and have it look nice. We have only used recommended products and tried everything but the floor looks awful.

Every day when I walk through my beautiful home it just makes me sick to see the floor and knowing that I can'€™t get it to look cleaned. I would never put this floor down in my home again. We have tried to work with Lumber Liquidators on this problem and they blame us for what we have used on the floor, yet there is plenty of floor under rugs and such that have had no product on them and they have the same inferior finish. We have yet to decide whether we should pursue legal action.

Lumber Liquidators Will Not Honor Their Warranty
By -

PHOENIX, ARIZONA -- In 2007 I bought the Asian Birch Flooring. Within 6 months it started to delaminate. It is engineered wood flooring. I finally made a complaint to LL asking for repairs where the floor is clearly separating from the wood backing. I went through the questions and sent pictures. I didn't hear back. I called again and finally they sent someone out to take pictures and see the floor. After a week they sent me a letter saying they were not responsible. Because it may have been exposed to a harsh environment too dry or too humid climate.

They said "the unbalanced environmental conditions have caused concerns". I don't know what unbalanced conditions they are talking about, my house is heated in Winter and cooled in Summer just as would be expected in any American home. Funny it didn't say that in the Warranty that came in the box. As a matter of fact it said it was a great product, good even for kitchens. I guess they get to rewrite their warranties as they please. Shame on Bob ** for representing this company.

Company Response 03/29/2010:

If we had someone take photos of the flooring it would have been in support of your warranty as a need to hold a manufacturer accountable for quality should a defect be found. Flooring will react to changing conditions and we note the invoice, warranty, and installation instructions, as well as some boxes also note requirements for maintaining ideal conditions. The problem is most consumers don't read this information until a problem occurs...a little too late, then expect LL to compensate for issues out of our control. We rightfully decline claims where failures are not directly related to the manufacture of the flooring and provide helpful advice as our best means of service. In some situations we even send a complimentary box to help with repairs, but it sounds like the problem was not with the flooring, but rather some installation or site condition. If you ask to speak with a Sup / Dir of CC, we'll send you the report for your review. The warranty is clear and the comment the warranty doesn't state what a consumers responsible for is not accurate. The products can be used in a kitchen, but some warranty's limit coverage to wear only when installed in a place where spills and water intrusion are more likely - Bathrooms included! I'm sorry to hear this led to some dissatisfaction as the problem would be the same no matter where you shopped; you would most likely pay more elsewhere. Read the information provided__ Dan Gordon often provides some good advice as well with his replies - Bob Vila also knows how important it is to read the installation instructions / warranty.
