POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- M&T Bank uses software which posts debits in descending order from highest amount to lowest. It first posts debits and then credits regardless of the chronological order that they arrived at the bank. Consequently, there is a higher probability that the bank will be able to charge insufficient fund fees with the elderly, disabled, and working poor as well as veterans and anyone else living on a pension. The customer service is not at all helpful in dealing with unauthorized charges or premature charge in violation of contract dates. Their response is it isn't the bank's fault.
ROCHESTER, NEW YORK -- I used an ATM at work to lift $40 - there was a charge of 1.75 for that bank (ESL) to use its machine, fair enough & standard practice. But M & T Bank also charged me an additional 1.75 for using their card in that ATM. Is this fair? Was I warned at the ATM that I'd be charged $3.50 in total for $40 cash? The bank's response to my query was that their own ATM machines are free for my use.
