ATLANTA, GEORGIA -- For what it's worth . . .

After reading all of the negatives, I felt it was only fair that I say something positive about the company.

Unfortunately most of us only talk about the negatives. When things go right, you don't tell anyone. So, these statistics which appear to be so negative are probably not representative of the overall experience with the company, certainly not mine.

In my experience, and I've been with them 40 years, they have been more than fair. I currently live in Dekalb County GA and crime here is rampant, not to mention the ridiculous traffic congestion.

In the past several years, I have had two vehicles stolen out of my driveway, one enclosed 16 ft utility trailer with $35,000 contents, and had some juvenile delinquents with a stolen vehicle crash into my house, to the tune of $20,000 damage. (Since the vehicle was stolen, of course the stolen vehicle insurance did not pay because the drivers were not authorized.)

There have been other less substantial claims over the years as well, but they have always come through for me.

My daughter has totaled two cars, not to mention substantial damage to another. In each case they paid off without an argument. In fact, I feared they might cancel my insurance considering the dollar amounts that they have had to pay to settle the claims.

I have to admit that I get a little annoyed when I compare my rates to what my relatives pay in North Florida. But when I think about the total amount of my losses, I will just pay the cost and not complain. I sleep better at night, hoping that I don't have to call them, but reassured to know that they're there if I have to.

Very nice review. I work in insurance and get tired of "defending" it to those who don't understand how it works. I'm glad you enjoy your service and understand how coverages apply.

Gothic, I'm in agreement with you about defending those who don't understand how it works. In a previous life I had a stint with a major insurance company. Not P&C, but health, life, and investments. I was one level below top management so fielding complaints fell to me. Sometimes I felt as though I was banging my head against a brick wall.

I've had State Farm since I learned how to drive and have multi car and home coverage from them now. I've never had a complaint about them.

Come on down to the MS Gulf Coast, and you won't find such glowing words about State Farm. I wouldn't trust them to insure my $50.00 bicycle.

I really feel for all those hurricane victims, I really do. However, there just happens to be some "inherent risk" as to where people live, particularly on beach fronts, etc. I guess the courts need to decide how much insurance companies are liable for.

I Was Hit By State Fame Insured Driver

BLAINE, MINNESOTA -- I was hit at a gas station by a State farm insured driver. I was pumping gas at the pump not in the car and parked correctly. The estimate for damages was $1941.38, State farm issued payment of $1095.22. This leaves me to pay $846.13 for damages that are in no way my fault. I have spoke with several agents in the claims department including a manager. They all give me the same story, they claim that there are prior scratches on a part that now needs to be replaced therefore they can reduce payment of the amount of the prior damage. My vehicle is 7 years old it is bound to have scratches.

Think of it this way, your car is hit parked in a parking lot, you are not at fault. You have to pay $846.16 to repair the damage caused by a State Farm insured driver. Sound fair to you?

My Insurance Company, My Lawyer, my body shop and the Department of Commerce agree with me. State farm doesn’t care.

Good luck in recovering your damages. My son was hit by a minivan while he was walking across the street. We had Statefarm Insurance and so did the driver. State Farm didn't even cover all the medical bills. I dropped them. We went to court and lost. They are a very bad insurance company.

You will have to sue for the deductable. Contact your state insurance commissioner and file a complaint. And change insurance companies. You're lucy you're not in Katrina country (the Gukf Coast). State Farm really

I am shocked at the amount of people that have brought State farm to court and lost. It sees as though they spend more on lawyers to screw people than to take care of their customer.

You can take any insurance company to court, but be sure to get your state insurance licence before you go so that you can understand what your state laws and regulations are. The reason they keep winning is that they are right. Next time you get that policy booklet, read it, then talk with your insurance company about what you don't understand. This way you understand what your insurance is doing for you and how it works.
As far as the hurricane's, you're talking about the largest home insurer in North America, of course they are in the spotlight. At least they paid when they had to unlike all the companies that folded and couldn't pay.

State Farm Insurance is dishonest and the most greedy company in the country. They never recognize their mistakes, never pays for the damage properly. They protect only traffic offenders, but not their honest customers. They do not pay enough and easy violate the legal rights regarding thepayments. Stay away from them.

State Farm ripping of our senior citizens

VILLA RIDGE, MISSOURI -- We are a small contracting firm in the St. Louis area specializing in insurance restoration claims. Our deal like most of the other insurance contractors is that we complete the work for the amount established by the insurance carriers. We have found that this has the minimal financial effect on our customers with the only out of pocket costs being the deductible and any upgrades.

A large hail storm producing golf ball size hail and strong winds blew through Villa Ridge, MO on 5/13/10. Approximately 1 1/2 weeks later a storm came through producing 60+ MPH winds. One subdivision, Golden Pond has had approx 80-90% of the roofs replaced due to the hail.

We had several houses in this area that we recommended replacing the roofs. The State Farm adjuster met us at these sites and we both inspected the roof. He recommended replacing one roof, did not include any of the roof accessories, IE; vents, drip edge or pipe flashing and only one run of aluminum gutters across the back of the house. No consideration at all for the front gutters or any of the screens that were damaged. His comment to us was you know how the game is played. She is a disabled senior citizen that can barely walk. The adjuster was told, by our customer, to contact us about the claim and we would make the arrangements for any meetings that were needed. He was left several phone messages and never called us back. He went to her home, without us present and settled the loss. I got a call and she was crying saying that she almost fell getting to the door, it takes her over 5 minutes to get to the door. He kept ringing the door bell until she answered. And he missed the interior damages as well.

The other house in Golden Pond he recommended 1/2 a roof, 3 aluminum window wraps and no gutters. A few inappropriate and derogatory remarks about our customer were made by him, such as, "She is kinda goofy isn't she?." She was involved in an auto accident recently and had a brain trauma. He recommended to the homeowner to withdraw the claim so she would not be charged with a claim and to file one later and maybe the front would be covered. then came back 1 hour later and gave her a $1,500 estimate with a $1000 deductible and closed the file. This yard connects to the 1st house we wrote about. The neighbor on the north side, south side, west side and east side of her each had hail damages and got full roofs.

We had the same adjuster on 4 other properties in the area and an independent adjuster from State Farm on the 5th property. We googled a map of the area and these houses are all in a straight line with the yards connected 2 of them, and the street dividing the rest.

He recommended paying for one roof, only half the gutters, a garage door, and had a repair recommendation of $76 for a metal door that was damaged. He denied the damages to the metal pole barn roof. The back yard connects to the independents roof, he did a 100% replacement with no problems.

Directly across the street our customer is another retired senior citizen who was denied. He was told there was no damage at all. We replaced the next door neighbors roof and our competition replaced the roof across the street from them.

Across the street our customer is with a different company and got a whole roof, gutters, siding and a roof on the pole barn. This yard connects to the property of a retired widow. He recommended replacing 1/2 of her dwelling roof, the back gutters, one metal roof and half of another metal roof. His comment to me was " I guess we will see how good your salesmanship is and you can sell her the other half of the roof. He then stated that he did not want to set a precedence on replacing the metal roofs because he does not think the structural integrity was effected by the hail. We met him on site two weeks ago and she still has not received the estimate or check, but has been told at least 4 times that the check was in the mail, an out and out bold faced lie. When she asked for another adjuster she was told that State Farm will not send anyone else out, they have confidence in the adjusters assessment of the damages and his repair recommendations.

Another retired widow house was done half way as well, shingles only on the roof, no gutters, no roof turbines, and no screens. We met him for a re-inspection, he will not pay for one of the roofs on the property. His inspection was 2 1/2 weeks ago, still no check. In the mean time our customer has been hospitalized with heart problems and called me literally crying her eyes out and wanted to know what was going on. She told me her blood pressure was up again over this and she can not deal with it any longer, and that we should go ahead and complete the repairs and she will pay for it all. This is golf ball sized hail that caused the damages.

My last complaint is a customer that we replaced the roof next door to him from the wind. You can lift huge sections of shingles on both the slopes on the garage and house. State Farm recommended replacing 3 square of shingles, and some guttering, with no consideration of removing the tree off of the garage. He now has interior water damages.

we had state farm ins.3 years ago and tried to get them to take us back for home owners ins. we are senior citizens and we asked them for help because our ins. we have now raised out payments so high it hurts us very much and state farm said our ins called them and told them we turned in a claim for a brioken pipe which we did but they helped us pay for the new carpet in the basement and the walls replaced and floor we did not do all we had to do to it and yet they say state farm cause we also turned in a water problem to them from a roof leak and they did not give us much to help us only $400.oo to fix the leak on the roof and nothing else we now cannot get state farm to cover us why? We have had hail damage IL is well known for this also but we paid for the siding and they did not heklp us much on that eiither we are old and it takes alot to keep up with the weather it is not our fault we pay them on time and never miss a payment we also had our car isn with them now they say we can"t do that either what is up with this this is wrong

Failed customer service

In June 2008 I went to my State Farm agent Debbie Beech in Catasauqua, PA to pay my car insurance for six months. Two months later I get a bill in the mail stating I owe $70 dollars for the month of August. naturally being confused I called my agent and asked what the deal was. She really didn't have a clue what to say or how to fix it. Although she did admit there was an error on their part. I stated my monthly policy payments where only $28.34 how do I owe anything at all let alone $70? She stated I will get a call back with the details of whats going on and how they will resolve the issue the next day. Next day came, no phone call, so I called them...now the cat and mouse game begins "she isn't in the office at the moment may I take a message" is the answer I got every time I called. So I had my sister call five minutes after I did, low and behold shes in the office. I call back right after my sister hangs up, again, "shes not in the office may I take a message". The only way I got the agent on the phone was by calling the State Farm field office and making a complaint. I called the State Farm field office which deals with billing issues to only find out they don't know whats going on either. An agent from the field office met with my agent to "investigate" the matter. I then find out I not only owe $70 for August but September, October and November which I already paid in full. Here we are almost a year later and I still don't have answers. Now I'm going through it all again this year. I paid for six months again this year. Same problem, new agent.
Enough is enough, after the horror stories I read about people going through hell when they make claims, reports of poor customer service (including my own experiences) I wouldn't recommend State Farm to anyone even my worst enemy if I had one. They are half the price of all the other companies I got quotes from. But price isn't everything.

My State farm agent is amazing. My ex's State Farm agent sucked. I really do think it depends on who you get as an agent. You would think all things are created equal in regard to everything under an insurance company, but they certainly are not.

I have state farm insurance and have had good expiriences with them...I have had 3 or 4 instances where I have used them and they have been wonderful to me. I'm sorry that particular agent didn't treat you right.
Did you write a check for the payments or kept some sort of record of the payments? That should clear it up.

I have had State Farm forever. They lowballed me on the value of a car on mine that was totalled but I was partially to blame for that due to it being the first time for something like that.
I had a few agents that were rude and one even accused me of staging a burglary. The one that I have now is great.

Yes I've had state farm for years myself and was very surprised that i have had this much trouble lately. The new agent i have now came recommended by the state farm field office. Problem is i am having trouble with this one as well, and its the SAME problem. I don't think its the agents i think its the billing system they are using. Yes i have all my recipes. Right now i have turned this over to the state to be investigated i hope they can sort things out.

I'm not surprised about your problem with SF, as they have revamped their claims and billings units for the worse. Their whole IT system has been outsourced and there are many quality issues as a result. The agents can't even deal with it.

Auto damage from rear ended accident

On October 5th I was rear ended by a person who has State Farm insurance, it has been more than a month since the accident we have yet to hear from one of their agents regarding this.

I filled up with diesel and went to work my truck started running rough then it quit all together, and I had to have it towed on a Tuesday to the dealership. they couldn't get it started again they drain out all the diesel and discovered that there was water in the fuel. They ruined a the new fuel filter that they had just put in due to so much water and the fuel injectors. I called my agent and told him the problem and the cost was fifty five to fifty nine hundred dollars and he filed the paperwork. I was called by another agent and told tell them no to do anything until he looked at the truck which my the dealership did. I received a call on Friday stating they could not honor my clam due to maintenance issues. They stated if I changed the fuel filter like it said this wouldn't have happened the owners manual says 30,000 miles it was changed at 27,000 and the injectors were changed at 92,000 miles and they only have about 30,000 miles on them, but when they talked to the manufacture they said every 15,000 miles for the fuel filer, and when I explained that the owners manual stated different they wouldn't listen, and then I got to talk to a manager I told him the story and that my mechanic determine the water done the damage he stated and I quote "I don't trust mechanics". but my agent also saw the water and everything he told me he just sells the policies. Now it has been three weeks and I am still fighting with these ass@#$*. My wife has been with State Farm for 40 years and I have been with them for 25. we have two cars, two houses, and a fifth wheel insured by State Farm, but that is soon going to change I don't blame my agent he did everything he could even wrote a letter stating he saw the damage he is a good neighbor. Guess they are more worried about the bottom line they taking care for loyal customers. I have filed a couple of claims the last one when my grandson totaled our car and there were no problems, but this time I got passed around for one person to another no personal service I would rather drive without insurance then to give them any more of my money. I think we should all band together and drop State Farm and take their money away and see how they feel about that

I dont understand how this would be covered in the first place. I thought car insurance only covers accidents, theft, vandalism, and natural disasters.

Prince-Caesar - I am wondering what kind of insurance covers this as well. Maybe the letter writer will stop back and tell us. It sounds like he has a policy that does, other than this technicality they are using to deny coverage.

Umm. Did you check you policy to see if this issue is covered? I never heard of insurance for engine trouble. Did you go back to the station where you last got fuel? Your issue may be with them.

I work for an insurance company and we do not cover mechanical issues. If someone put water in his fuel tank then this would be vandalism, but it sounds like the mechanic already deemed it was not vandalism. As far as i know, there are no insurance companies who sell this kind of coverage, this would be called a warranty. You would have to check with the manufacturer to see if they would cover it.

Concordville, PA - Indulging In Deception. Learn How To Read A Police Report!

CONCORDVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA -- After work, my daughter parked her car on a street, acceptable, at 9:30pm. She safely exited her car and was standing between her car door and car. There were no oncoming cars. She was gathering her belongings, her puppy, her purse, and flowers, it was Valentines Day. She then looked up, at least 1-2 minutes later to see a car without its head lights on heading straight for her. Thankfully, she saw this car and fell into her car, nearly getting hit. The other driver hit the end of her door and swiped the side of her car. The police report clearly states the other driver did not have its lights on and that my daughter was already out of her car, not attempting to get out. There was 1510.00 worth of damage to her car. The other drivers insurance company is State Farm in Concordville, PA. I have exhausted myself talking, pleading, arguing, and just trying to understand why they are accusing my daughter of being 100% at fault. There is nothing on the police report that says she did anything wrong.

I am at my wits end and don't know what else to do at this point. This is so wrong and I am being raked over the coals by this insurance company.

I suggest that you contact your state's Office of the Attorney General, your state's insurance commissioner, and the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

You may need an attorney to fight this ridiculous company. They are just doing this to get out of making a payout.

The other driver is undoubtedly claiming that she opened her door into oncoming traffic. If there are no witnesses, it's one word against the other. It stands to reason that they'd back up their insured. If your state allows it, see if you can get an arbitrator involved.

Unfortunately PA is a No Fault state, meaning that your daughter must summit a claim to her insurance and then State Farm will reimburse her insurance for the bill.

I know it's a hassle because I've been there. I was a passenger in a car involved in an car accident in PA and the insurance company claimed that since I was a college student with no DL that my parents insurance would have to cover me. When I explained that my parents drove a company car with company insurance that only covered the car and it's occupants I went through hell trying to get them to cover my medical bills (I had a concussion and soft tissue damage to my face.)

Pa is not a strictly no fault state. It is rather confusing, but here is a good summary of it. http://accident-law.freeadvice.com/auto/pa_no_fault.htm
If you are in an accident and the other driver is at fault, they should pay for your damages. If it is too much of a hassle, you can claim under your own insurance, pay your deductive and hope to get that money back at some point. But more importantly, in PA the at-fault person in an accident is listed as operator #1 and if that is your daughter, then the police determined the accident was her fault.

Just found this in the Pa Consolidated Statutes:
§ 3705. Opening and closing vehicle doors.
No person shall open any door on a motor vehicle unless and
until it is reasonably safe to do so and can be done without interfering with the movement of other traffic, nor shall any person leave a door open on a side of a vehicle available to moving traffic for a period of time longer than necessary to load or unload passengers.

You say that your daughter was unloading her purse, flowers, puppy, etc., which she should not have been doing on the side of the road with traffic.

All insurance companies are going to say they are not to blame and you are. That is how they make money by not paying claims. I would say file with your insurance company and then let them go after State Farm. That is why you have them. trust me they will go after State Farm to get reimbursed

Well done, spiderman! "Purse", "flowers", "puppy" are not "passengers". Therefore, there appears to be contributory negligence on the OP's daughter's part. Depending on state laws on contributory negligence, this can result in shared liability or negate all liability...a question for a PA lawyer. Look for one offering a 'free initial consult'.

Well, this has all been very helpful and enlightening..or maybe entertaining!! I am so surprised to see so many responses, and thank you. The accident happened in NJ, the other drivers car is insured in PA. According to the police report, as well as my daughter, there were absolutely no cars uncoming as she, first exited her car as well as gathered her things. She was out of her car at least 2 minutes before this ding dong hit her door dead on. Reminder..no lights on his vehicle at 9:30 PM! That is stated on the report also. I've been through all this with State Farm...OD insurance co. Ironically, the adjuster from S.F. agreed with me, yet having his loyalty to the big cheese at S.F., he held tight on his decision. It is so obvious and they know it. What he claims, isn't reality and couldn't happen. Thank you all. I'll keep checking and definitely follow some of your leads! Another note, the other driver was 19 and has not filed anything with my insurance company for his damages...that really makes me wonder.

Tess, if you've stated this earlier up and I missed it sorry. Was your daughter parked against the flow of traffic? The reason I ask is I had a visitor to my home, she was inside and we were having dinner. Knock on the backdoor from the police. It seems the neighbor across the street had a visitor who backed his car right into the middle of my friend's car. She was faulted with the accident because her car was parked and facing in the wrong direction. It seemed really strange at the time, still does.

I have full coverage. They still found a way to wiggle out of paying for the claim. My reward to State Farm....... For not paying a $2000.00 claim. You lose my Lexus insurance, My home owners insurance, My three quads, my personal umbrella.

Let's forget about the last 7 years of payments. Let's forget about the future.

With some details, I may be able to help you out with this claim or at the very least help you to understand why it was denied. What are your exact coverages? did you have limited comp/coll coverage? what was the cause of loss?

There is no collision coverage on my daughters car with our auto insurance provider. (NJ Manufacturers) Once the police reports were obtained, I submitted the required paperwork to my insurance carrier, as well as the other drivers carrier (State Farm). Based on the report, as stated before, it clearly states that my daughter was already out of her vehicle and the other driver did not have his lights on. State Farm continues to say that my daughter opened her door into oncoming traffic, which she did not do. Its all documented. The conversations I've had with State Farm have been unbelievable, as though they want to say, "You know, you're right but our hands are tied."

State farm is a TERRIBLE insurance company, I was insured with them, had my house, umbrella, 6 vehicles, 1 commercial liability policy, 2 bonds, etc, well, long story short, my insurance agent let my bond elapse, they base their liability and commercial policies in payroll (pretty standard practice amongst insurance carriers) but want to stick you with several thousand dollar bills by charging you 0.49 cents per $1000 in payroll. State farm is a terrible company, they do not stick to a payment arrangement plan even if you have made one with them...Like a good neighboor, right??

Pathetic Excuses To Not Repair Car

CHATTANOOGA, TENNESSEE -- I was involved in a 3 car accident. I was sitting at a red light waiting to turn left onto a 5 lane road (counting turn lane). As I waited a red Honda Passport was at my right waiting to turn into the complex I was coming out of. A 1979 Ford truck was coming from my left. They both had green lights, the Honda decided he could make it and DID NOT! His tires had no tread and the truck hit him and that slammed him into me. We had just left State Farm Insurance after over 30 years because of 2 claims that were not our fault but were handled poorly( ill explain after this). They got our car to the body shop. The trucks occupants went by ambulance to hospital. The passport was ok. My back started hurting but I did not go, I went to drive a couple of days later. They start puling my car apart and after fighting about the glass that flew at me and damaged my windshield then glass flew all over my cars drivers side and scrubbed the top of the car. There were 2 places on the roof that were damaged and they said they would fix. We found more scrapes on the drivers side of my car from the glass. They told me at first they would paint the top then after having someone come look at the car again changed their minds because they said my car had been painted before and the spots were not damage from wreck but paint plume. Something of that nature they say was a bad paint job and starts at the bottom were the metal is and just pops up.

I told the girl I'm dealing with there were no problems before especially on the sides where you could see glass had hit and slid down the sides. They "changed" their minds and were now not going to fix it. I told her that in no way am I accepting the car and she told me to get out of their rental. I said fine. We left them before this because of a flood. We bought a car and had it 1 month to the day and it was totaled in a flood. There were many cars in our complex totaled and they instead of towing them to the auto makers were going to a field and would have "experts" from each make come look at the cars and decide whats wrong. They called and said our car needed new carpet and thats it. I asked them if they knew it went to the field on a tow truck, they said yes, I said don't you think a car that just needed carpet wouldn't have to be towed in?

After that they sent it to Mercedes which said if we wanted to strip it completely and start over they would build me a new one. They then tried to price it by comparing cars with 90 to 160000 more miles on it than ours. They are a crappy company. I'm glad we left and wish we had done it sooner!

I suggest that you contact your state's insurance board and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, and inform them of the situation. They may be able to help you with this.
