Beware of Travelers' Home Insurance; False Advertising

WASHINGTON, DC, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA -- I was very happy for nearly 10 years with my State Farm Home Insurance. But, before renewing my insurance I decided to call around. I called GEICO, my car insurance, to see if they had a better deal and they did via Travelers. I signed up and they said that they needed to come out an inspect to make sure that I did indeed have 2 separate utility meters because I have a 2-family historic Victorian row house.

Well, today, after the inspection, I got a letter in the mail saying that because I had a tar and gravel roof and my cast iron front stairs had some damage I would need to replace/repair these in the next 65 days or else they would jack up my premiums.

I had no idea that they were looking for this (and the inspector never went on top of my roof) or that the price could change if they found things they considered problems.

I've already called State Farm to see if I can come back.

BEWARE of home Travelers' inspectors who say they are coming to inspect one thing and then inspect something you have no idea about that could cost you thousands of dollars to change or elevated premiums.

If Travelers frequent 'compliments' are any indication, this company revels in deception. You're probably far better off going back to State Farm.

COLUMBUS, OHIO -- Often one hears of the lack of concern of insurance companies when you must file a claim. After a recent storm we discovered our home had sustained roof damage. We were very concerned and unsure of our course of action. Jeff, our independent insurance agent, was helpful, knowledgeable and concerned. He advised that we contact our homeowner's insurance company, Travelers. Ida, who took our call on the Travelers 1 800 line was most respectful, pleasant and helpful. She assuaged our worries and provided all the information we needed to seek advice and help from Travelers. Our claims adjuster, Pat, was prompt, his actions knowledgeable and, again, respectful and concerned. Everyone involved with our claim with Travelers showed the highest levels of professionalism and courtesy. No one wants to have the unpleasant circumstance of storm damage and the resultant need to contact your insurance company. What I can attest to, however, is that if you have an unfortunate need to seek advice regarding an insurance claim, Travelers and their staff have proven their professionalism, courtesy and dedication to their clients.

I had a Travelers policy for several years and luckily never needed to make a claim. I have had negative experiences with insurance claims of all types in the past....( no returned calls, begging, "lost mail", "the person I talked to quit"), so I wasn't sure what to expect. From the first contact with Travelers I was treated like a valued customer. People returned calls when they said they would. Showed up when they said they would, and did everything promptly and professionally. All of this was related to Tropical Storm Irene, I am sure they were very busy to boot. I am not in the habit of writing reviews, but I really was impressed with this Company. I think I received my check within 10 days of claim. I will continue to use this company even if it costs a little more.

I would recommend travelers to anyone!

I had a 100 year old tree fall in my backyard and it was HUGE, I called travelers during the storm and filed my report right away, they explained my coverage to me and gave me a claim #. I had an agent by the next day and a check was on its way not much later than that. I have had negative experiences in the past with other insurance companies, they just don't want to pay out on anything, I have had 2 claims with travelers and they are so supportive and there is no hassle. They paid a portion of the tree removal and for the repair of a fence that was damaged no hassle.

Travelers Ins. Co. are cold and uncaring

I have Travelers Home owner insurance through Geico. It's over 8 months since I had a house fire ( January 2009) and to this day (9/30/09)Travelers still hasn't finished settling my claim. Travelers are so cold and unfeeling, I've been through a real tragedy, a hardship, I have not been able to live in my house these past 8+ months. The stress from all of this has been making me sick. I made it this far only because of help from friends and family. I couldn't afforded to pay for the reconstruction/repairs myself but even if I could've I was told that I can't make repairs incase they need to re-inspect the property. So I'm at Travelers mercy, which they've shown me none. I've even filed a complaint against Travelers Insurance Co. and the adjuster with the NYS Ins. Dept. but all they did was forward my complaint to Travelers. Travelers weren't concerned, It seems that the NYS INS. Dept. have no real power or they don't care. About 3 weeks ago I received partial payment for my claim, so I've started repairs. I hope by next month, before the winter comes, I'll be back home again and maybe the claim will be finally settled. Travelers are the worst insurance company I've ever seen. The Travelers agents seem caring at first when they want your business, but watch out should you have a claim. I learned the hard way. Once this claim is finally settled I'm changing Insurance companies, I've had enough.

You may want to change insurance companies once you get this claim resolved.

That's crazy. You pay, and then when you need them, they drag you through the mud.

Good luck. I hope your house is rebuilt soon. And take Ms.CBW's advice, change insurance companies after this ordeal is over.

Also, file a complaint with your state's insurance commission immediately; this action gets insurance company's attention very fast.

"Travelers Ins. Co. are cold and uncaring - Home owners Insurance."

Sounds like a typical insurance company. None of them are warm and caring.

Aren't Traveler and Geico two different companies?
voiceoff on 2010-01-03:
In my area Travelers is the company most used and their rates are much higher than other home insurers because they are regarded as giving good coverage. They do seem to hike the rates as much as possible though unless you are on top of it, perhaps. It depends where you live and who your broker is too, I would think.
It is a scary time when there is a fire or flood or whatever, and people are worn out and in need so the way a person is treated is so important.
Hope all works out well in the end.
I had a small claim once many years ago when my fence was destroyed by weather and they did replace it quickly. Not sure about roofing claims though.

Jokesters insurance

This insurance company is a joke. My dog was tied to a pole right in front of my door (technically within my property) when a boy neighbor with his parents right behind him approached my dog to hug him. My dog got scared and bit the boy. I called Travellers to check on the repercussions of the event. Well, they said should they sue me I would be protected, etc. Neighbors did not sue but guess what, since then, have not heard from Travelers and stopped receiving my bills. I then went ahead and signed up with another insurance company. Around 8 to 9 months later I got slapped with a letter saying they are canceling my policy because I have a vicious dog in my property. I should have heeded the advise of people from internet reviews. Just goes to show they will not be around when you need them but they would gladly take your monthly premiums.

I don't know what travelers covers, but if it's in their policy to protect you when your dog bites someone then that's pretty shady on their part to back out on you. I have 2 small dogs, one who loves people, and one whos very shy and doesn't like strange people. I know to keep him away from strangers, and when I take him to the pet store and someone comes over to pet the nicer one, I always tell them that my other one is a little shy, and you don't need to pet him. If you know your dog would bite a stranger, I wouldn't keep him out of my sight, even if it's on my own property.
JR in Orlando on 2009-09-08:
My understanding is that Travelers said they would cover you if you were sued, but that you later signed up with "another insurance company." The other insurance company then 8 or 9 months later, canceled that insurance company's policy.

Either report an incident or don't. Never call with inquiries in your own name, because the insurance company makes note of it, and probably shares that information with other insurance companies. If you call and say "my siberian tiger bit my neighbor" do you think that might make them hesitate to insure you, even if no claim was then filed.

Worst Insurance Company Award / Fraud Specialists...

We were hit with a golf ball hailstorm in our neighborhood. All our neighbors, on every side of our home received new roofs by their insurance company due to hail damage. Travelers came out to our home and told us our roof was in excellent condition and by the act of nature we were spared by this storm. We contacted 3 roofing companies and all of the roofers said, "Travelers needs to pay for a new roof. Your roof will be leaking in 6 months. You have hail damage on the North, East, South, and West side of your roof!" I have pictures of big black circles all over the roof, where the hail hit it. Travelers hired an "outside" engineer to tell us our roof was fine. That way in case of a lawsuit they don't have the liability they would have normally had. I am sure the "outside engineer" also received a fat bonus for writing a letter stating our roof was not damaged by hail. Most people will not go through the trouble of pursuing a lawsuit and that is what Travelers is counting on. We pay them homeowners every month to insure our home, and the first time our home is damaged they come out here and tell us they will not pay for it!!!! We have contacted the BBB and Travelers has not responded to them either.

Did all three roofing companies you hired provide a written statement that the roof needed repairs? Remember if it isn't in writing then it's worthless.
moneybags on 2009-08-15:
BBB has no legal standing to force any company to do anything. It is a voluntary membershiop organization.

Take pictures, get the reports, estimates, etc and send them to Travelers, the adjustor, their legal department, your State Insurance Commissioners Office and your attorney. Let Nationwide know exactly who the info is being sent to. The insurance commissioner and your attorney (or the Judge) are the only ones that can force them to do what's right. Good luck

GEORGIA -- Last Sunday, a large tree fell on my property, totaled the maintenance mans truck and did damage to my neighbors car and my car. I call the claims dept. and told them what happened. received a call Monday from someone in India, she told me what they were not going to do and to e-mail photos. I told her I did not have
ability to do so. I requested someone to come to my house and review the claim. In the mean time neighbor and maintenance are screaming to me "what are you going to do. Travelers them call back and said someone would be there the next day between 2;30 and 3. No one ever came, or called. At 4;30 I called and was treated with no respect, I read her the riot act, she hung up the phone. Someone called back and said someone would be there in 30 minutes, no show!

They are not returning my calls and I had to call the police on irate maintenance man. Received a voicemail from insurance co, saying claim denied.

It is really unreasonable for a company to flat out deny a claim without even doing the least bit of investigating into it. I suggest that you contact the Georgia Department of Insurance at http://www.inscomm.state.ga.us/

CHANTILLY, VIRGINIA -- A large tree fell on my house during Hurricane Sandy and heavily damaged an addition. The room had to be torn off and completely rebuilt. Travelers Insurance Company was excellent, fair and through in handling my claim and assisting me to find good people to do the repair work. I had no surprises related to this claim.
