Our GE Spectra was purchased from Lowe's about 4 years ago. Today, we have had the same problem with the heating element glowing red & white and spitting sparks. Turning the control knob off had no effect - had to turn off circuit breaker. This is dangerous and needs to be looked at before someone gets hurt.
One more oven fire - was using our GE Spectra oven when I noticed a sparkler effect on the lower element. The element was burning white hot and continued to burn even after turning the oven off. I had to pull the oven out and unplug it, the fire eventually went out. Glad I was home, not sure if my wife could have gotten the oven out to unplug it. Seems with this many complaints on the same model with the same issue, GE would attempt to fix the problem or assist owners in some way.
7/23/09 - I purchased my GE Spectra electric range in 2002. Today I was preheating it to 400 degrees and the heating element in the bottom of the oven burned out. It started burning and making a loud noise until it broke apart. I turned the oven off and unplugged it. The smoke alarm saved me from getting seriously hurt. While I was dealing with the smoke alarm in the hall, the whole black glass front exploded all over my kitchen floor.
I bought an GE Spectra gas range because most of the reviews at that time were very complimentary. It worked well until the warranty ran out and then the Bake button started going bad. I put up with it for a long time but finally had to replace the entire panel just to get a new bake button. This cost me over $200.00. I have a GE microwave that I have had for 15 years and it is still going strong. It seems that once GE started making things in Mexico, the quality went out the window.

I was recently cooking dinner and heard a loud sizzling noise from inside the oven. I saw the orange glow of sparks flying off the heating unit. Then a small flame emerged at which time I quickly shut off the oven but this did not extinguish the flame. My husband had to turn off the circuit breaker to stop the fire. After reading other negative reviews, I am surprised to learn that this was not unusual for this model. I cannot believe there have been no recalls for this oven! Unbelievable! Do yourself a favor and buy another brand.
