Computer Purchase and Tech Support

DENVER, COLORADO -- I went to Staples (Colorado Boulevard and Ohio Avenue) to purchase a new PC after having receiving very poor service at Best Buy. I thought of them after remembering an ad from several years ago. I was met by the friendliest manager (**) who attended to all of my needs and made me feel as if I were the only person in the store. Every question was answered prior to my purchase. My PC needed to be shipped from another state, and I was informed every step of the way - from the moment the computer arrived in the store to the second everything was uploaded and ready for pickup.

Being new to Windows 8, this was a very new experience with this laptop and I had several new questions each time I signed on. I had the privilege of returning to the store and having the Sales Manager ** assist me through my naivete with the new Windows operating system. Every question was answered before I left the store.

A laptop (or any electronic) purchase can be overwhelming, and I found this to be the least intimidating and most helpful of all of my technology purchases. I hope more consumers come to know Staples for the superior provider of computers and tech support that they are!

The Worst Return Policy in Business.

PORTLAND CASCADE STATION, OREGON -- I went to Staples Cascade Station in Portland, Oregon to get an updated Word Software program and even brought toner back to recycle. I requested assistance to be assured the software would work on my PC. I should have walked out at that point, since they were too busy to help me, as they were stocking shelves and I was interrupting them. Finally, one woman looked at the program and said, "this will work for your PC Vista program, and if it doesn't work, just bring it back." I bought it for $99.00, went home, opened the package and followed the directions to install. When I got to the end and just before installing, I received an error that my PC was not compatible.

I went back the next weekend to return it and the manager and everyone in the store on this day said I couldn't return it because I opened the package. I was told by the manager to "give it to someone else." Really! I need a program for me, not give a $99 program to someone else. What happened to exchange! I left the store with a $99 program I can't use. I guess I should have taken by cash and threw it out the window on my way home. Don't buy anything at Staples you plan on opening, because if you open it and it doesn't work, forget it, you own it. Good business practices for a poor economy.

Defective Products, Unhelpful People, Disappointing Experience

TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA -- I bought a router and a modem from Staples, and I should never have done that, because:

  1. They BOTH broke down very within a month (about two weeks for the router).

  2. I cannot return the defective products to Staples, because I can only return products within 14 days, even though I have my receipt and everything, and their people said on the phone that I could, and the router and the modem are still under warranty.

  3. They blamed all of the above on me for not buying their store warranty. I am just wondering whether I would have been happier if I had spent the extra money and had to go back to their store twice just to replace their defective products for some new ones that may or may not be defective.

  4. Their technical help is not helpful at all. I asked them if I need to buy a coax cable to connect the modem to the wall. They said no. But I actually had to.

In all, it was an extremely disappointing experience. I bought a router from Walmart later, it worked OK, but was a little slow. I returned it to Walmart without any problems, and got another model that works great. So, since most (if not all) products carried by Staples can be found in other stores, I would not recommend Staples to anybody from now on.

UPLAND, CALIFORNIA -- I've always dealt with Staples in Upland, CA and most recently had to upgrade my computer, speakers, screen and connect my scanner. We started in January of 2013 and were fortunate enough to have Jason ** assist us in not only the purchase but the installation of the equipment for my business. I work from home. He was so knowledgeable and skilled. Very professional, answered all of our questions and did some training on the equipment.

He made some recommendations for a backup system because of the work I do. Sold. He came and installed that as well. Jason is the only person we will speak within regard to our electronic needs. He is very calm, patient, neat and worked well with us. We are so happy with the quality of work he provides. Thank you Jason.

Information on Cell Phones

SPRINGFIELD, VIRGINIA -- I went into Staples to just find out information about a new cell phone for myself and my family. The individual with cell phone information was not in the store that day. The store employees happily called the individual and he gladly came in just to talk with me about individual cell phones, services, and look up information on my account. Justin came in on his day off just to speak with me! Happily! He was very knowledgeable, polite, patient and understanding.

I did not purchase a new phone at that time since I wanted to speak with my family about our needs and he understood and told me he was available when I am ready. I will be going back to this store again and wanted to thank Justin, Staples, and the whole team of their outstanding service.

DAVIE, FLORIDA -- I bought a Toshiba computer for my girlfriend as a gift, but her mother became ill and she passed away soon after. Did not have time to return it until the following day after warranty expired. They would not refund me the money or exchange it either.

I called Toshiba for their address to send it and they sent a bunch of surveys instead. Got no help there either. The $50 rebate offer by Staples never arrived either. Now, I got no computer and I'm out of $400. The manager at the Davie store in Florida where I bought it was a real ** and told me he could not help any longer. This was the second time I took the computer to them. Will never do business with Staples again. Buyer Beware!!!

Had Something Returned That I Didn't Know I Had Lost

NORTH BERGEN, NEW JERSEY -- I stopped in to ask if anyone had found some drawings I thought I might have lost in the store. It was late and there were quite a few people online. Ana said she would check the office to see if they had been turned in. A little while later she returned but hadn't had time to check so instead took my name and number. Not long after I returned home I received a call from Ana in which she informed me that while she hadn't found my drawings she had found an envelope with something rather valuable inside and my name on it. It was an important payment that I thought I had mailed and would have been at a complete loss as to its whereabouts.

I'm not in the rewards program so they wouldn't have found me there, And I suppose someone might have eventually thought to mail it back to me. But I want to say thank you to Ana for her dedication, and diligence. As busy as she was, she wasn't too busy to be helpful, kind, and courteous. How I was treated made an impact on me. Please let her know that it was appreciated. In the future when I'm busy or hurried I hope I can remember how someone's patience helped me and use it as a lesson.

Associate Corrected Errors Twice Causing a Very Satisfied Customer

MESA, ARIZONA -- I visited the local Staples store to order business cards for my employer. I was not asked to pay in advance (which was unusual) and no receipt was provided; although, I asked for one and time was spent drafting the card on a computer at the location. The Clerk wrongfully told me that if I had them mailed, and there was a mistake, they would not correct it, so I told her I would pick them up at the store.

After a couple of weeks when I hadn't received a call, I stopped in to follow up. At that time, I was told that there was no order. Candace ** was very apologetic and very helpful in helping me to replace the order (that had never been ordered). When the order came in, by mail, the telephone number had been listed twice instead of the telephone number and fax number. I took them back to the store. Candace was not there but she took care of it and shortly thereafter, we received the corrected business cards in the mail.

This was several months ago. But I was so impressed with the service, that when I went into the store yesterday to buy some supplies, I sought her out specifically to thank her for her service. I don't usually follow up on surveys, etc., but I believe that her assistance warrants this special recognition. Thank you Candace. Thank you Staples.

Purchased an HP Laptop & Software With Excellent Customer Service

EDGEWATER, NEW JERSEY -- I recently purchased an HP laptop and software at Staples. Not knowing much about the products, the Onsite Tech, Mario assisted me in selecting the right computer for me. He took the time to explain the different features and various applications to meet my requirements. He also explained the different offers connected to my purchase.

Since then, anytime I've needed education for 2013 apps or technical support for projects I was working on, Mario has always been available with continued excellent customer service and tremendous patience. He has a lot of knowledge in fixing any jam ups I created and can clear up a problem quickly. Mario is truly an asset to the Edgewater store.

Sloppy Welcome Area

HOUSTON, TEXAS -- I had ordered a laser cartridge online because Staples had the best price for this item. I received 2 telephone calls that it had arrived and went in to pick it up the next day. On a Monday afternoon, there was no one in line at the one open cashier. The cashier could pull up my name on the computer, but, unfortunately, she had no idea where to locate my cartridge. After the cashier sifted through different areas, I waited until she could locate the supervisor who could retrieve my order.

As I looked around the store, it was noticeably disorganized -- at the checkout area and atop shelves. If they were in the middle of inventory, it was still disheveled and messy. Perhaps it was the Monday following a big weekend sale. But since it was 4:30 in the afternoon, one would think that the mess after the weekend would have been somewhat picked up, especially up front. A little more attention to detail and organization, especially in the areas where customers first walk in would be helpful.
